hi I really hope that you are not
thinking that we are going to talk about
criminal gangs that we will not tell you
how to create a criminal gang no no no
today we want to share this question we
got in our minds three years ago
together with Alfred s when we met we
had second cup of coffee and then you
know we’re discussing some HR issues
wondering how to make people more
effective how to unite them to make them
goal oriented and started to look for
examples what other people are doing to
succeed and then the idea about gangs
and gangs not doing team building came
to our mind so what we’re going to do
today we would like to share with you
three topics first is why do we talk
about gangs second one what is the gang
and third how actually it works in the
reality in practice so why do we talk
about the gang I think we have a common
dilemma in business today that and I
would like you to read this wonderful
quote of Klaus Shaw actually we all want
to be fast and it’s not about the eating
the others we are not really aggressive
it’s about their surviving in in this
world and the world also deliberately in
the picture you can see that the old
city but you have a light so our life of
businesses is really transforming at the
speed of light we have all these
globalization issues we have disruptive
technologies like Nokia was the giant
and it disappeared you know from one day
to another we have a new behavior
patterns we have iPhones and we live
with them so we’ve heard about the
artificial intelligence and about the
machine learning so all these disruptive
factor
they are at the table of the every
leader of the organization thinking okay
what will be after this 20 years when
the children are born today and what
chops 80% of jobs they will not exist as
the Thomas was telling today so we have
to create those jobs we have to
transform with the with the with the
businesses to be ready to accommodate
those people so this transformation and
the challenge is actually why we talk
how can we be more competitive unique
somehow and to survive be faster in this
this roller coaster and how to be faster
so I think that is again a
self-explanatory slide so how this guy
can be faster is it because of he can
buy the better bike I think they all
have the best bikes in the world all
this all these gentlemen and ladies
probably not in the picture so you
cannot be better survive and be
competitive because you have better
resources because there is no
availability to resources availability
to the information is is now very
penetrated so so you can buy anything
what you can compare with the only thing
which really make the difference and
I’ve learned it in my 20 years of
professional experience is is the people
so how motivated and how passion
passionate people are about what they do
so this is the key
Sakhi success factor and key competitive
factor for for every organization or a
working individual and then the question
is okay how to motivate them how how to
make them be passionate about what they
do I was passionate for for what I was
doing for for all my life I was really
wondering why do they pay the salary for
me because I’m learning so much and and
it’s so exciting you know just to be
here but it’s not the case and
especially with with with the
Millennials come
into the pictures and with this global
reports what we see here that 71 of the
working Millennials in u.s. and not
engaged or somehow engaged and the 43%
of wanting to switch the jobs it’s it’s
scary from from the from the business
perspective it’s scary so we thought
okay and I have a very good example we I
had this working employment conversation
with with with the guy we were trying to
to employ the data analyst and I was
preparing for that like you know okay
what is motivation now maybe you can do
better you can be you know grow in the
latter of being a manager now maybe we
can give a car to you know some
motivation factors which normally work
in the commercial organization and there
is that 20 years old guy sitting and
telling me I want to work for you
because you have a lot of good data to
work with I said ok data analyst data
sounds reasonable
no relation I cannot relate myself to
that so ok said get in I felt the
passion in his eyes he was so passionate
about the data and said we need to do
something with the data he’s passionate
about it how to motivate them I have no
idea ok we have wonderful team-building
activities so he would chip in we go to
the countryside we do some some kayaking
stuff you know so he will chip in and
he’s in and have a idea how to I want to
put him to unite him with the other of
the team around the same topic and I
think that will work and after receiving
a call from Alfred us I was telling him
come on team building the building
actually doesn’t work for the goal you
have because companies are doing team
building just because others are doing
team building so this is what we also
also should do we should have
motivational
systems we should give people cars we
should give them tables moving up and
moving down because we saw that other
companies are doing this other thing is
that team buildings are actually ad hoc
activities like okay something is wrong
so let’s do the team building hoping
that it will solve the problem but
people have to live life everyday so
it’s not creating a culture it’s just
nice activity to have and the third
thing is if people are kayaking or like
if they are pattern on going into swamps
this nice experience is not the same as
working together it’s like if we’re very
good in the bar having a nice chat
doesn’t mean that on the board table we
can really find a argument or like a
tree on certain things and then I
started like to advocate and asked
Alfred us to look more into creating the
culture a strong culture as as
anthropologist I analyzed before like
okay if we look at ganks or if we look
at real strong cultures what are the
elements what do they have to make it
happen what we could learn and take it
from their life to our corporate life
and understood that there are certain
elements first of all all their gangs
and it could be you know gangs as church
united by one idea or like it could be
gangs such as bikers or super moms
united by same values what do they have
in common so first of all they have very
strong and understandable idea why we
are here together what is our common
goal or common enemy also values are
uniting same as the goal and the element
supporting are like rituals symbols
storytelling because you need to know
who is accept it and who do we take out
of the gang and the residents our office
and this sounds like word
but what we found out that there is this
emotional unity among people because
while experiencing one ritual together
we get this action it’s not like that
that phrase we read is the action we’re
in which gives us emotion so it’s
basically emotional settlement what
makes us being United and to bring you
this from theory to practice how it
works in the corporation’s so we can
look at our me very clear very strong
long-lasting gang or type they have the
ritual before you become a soldier you
need to sign on the own and respect the
flag and kiss the flag and this
determines that in case of protection
the country you maybe need to lose your
life and by doing this you admit I am
part of the army I will do this other
example is of a very extraordinary
company mind Ally based in Kuala Lumpur
working for since 2003 and all their
company culture was built on heroism
like being the heroes and what is I was
reading about them and visited them and
it seems that you know first they built
a culture idea of a culture like where
the people want to work with how do we
want to work the work and only after
that they create the strategy how they
will run the business and to know they
were successful and this lady she is the
wonder lady is a symbol of all of the
organization all the acts to celebrate
victory store and chipping people or
like to tell goodbye is related to her
one more example is Airbnb so they were
like a couple of years ago moving from
San Fran’s to the new office in San
Francisco and before that they asked
anthropologist observe their lives and
tell how our office should look like
then anthropologists are doing the
research
you know talking to people doing
participant observation taking notes and
then they came up with some proposals
and in their office what they have they
have like replicas of the best sales
apartments in London and then they just
let’s say take the kitchen from London
apartment and built it in the office
that people you know while cooking
coffee or like having morning sandwich
they know that there is a flat in London
what makes me to earn the salary here so
it’s building stories and having this
feeling like our office is different
than other offices it’s not only about
logo it’s also about idea behind so on
how to work it in practice yeah we all
we now talk about all these successful
companies and then the big ones so so we
want to show that ok here in Lithuania
we also have some some symbols and
rituals to prove that we are creating
the culture so we have in slo Lithuania
we have a yearly meeting after the year
is done we collect the results we think
about the future what is our common goal
and come on enemy for the future and we
have the initiation ritual for the
newcomers and as the host was mentioning
we have quite a big rotation or I would
say growth of there of the staff so that
becomes very important for us
so we are from the electrical side so we
do electrical thing if you know a little
bit chemistry and electricity if you put
the lines and cables together into the
acidic environment the the lightbulb can
be lit so there is a little bit of a
tricky because there is a polarity if
you put it one way it won’t and in the
other it will so there is a challenge
for the team of the new comers and we
have a lot of people for example 12 50
15 people they all have to put the line
together
and then they have and the light has to
be on and that is the ritual for the
initiation if they succeed
so how it works at the beginning people
who are newcomers they get the mission
get instruction what do they have to do
to prove that they can be called part of
a gang and then they open up they were
super excited and then you know they
find these limes and lemons cables and
the coins and thinking what to do with
it and then they start building the
electric circuit as South to the set
sometimes they get mixed you know like
why doesn’t work why doesn’t work why we
don’t reach the goal why the light is
not on so then they understand where the
mistakes are done all the other people
are real observing and getting into this
because they have experienced that last
year or two years ago so they are like
you know what is the problem because the
experience that the fault and then once
the light is on you know these people
feel like they conquered the war because
it’s so much happiness that we managed
to fulfill this mission we managed to
light the bulb and this is what the
companies are doing every day working in
teams fulfilling certain criterias and
having this one goal to reach together
so when the light is on they are the
part of the team officially and again I
would like to read you the famous quote
of Peter Drucker and and the culture
eats everything so you can have the best
business plan you can have the best
processes best IT systems to run the
things but if you have the culture which
is not contributing to your common goal
that means that that culture is eating
all the investments all the efforts you
do so you better have good culture and
not necessarily perfect the rest but the
good culture can can do magic so rituals
rituals are very visible part of
creating a culture it helps to enhance
the the emotional factor of of that
belongingness to the gang but the
question of creating the culture is more
everyday work taking the leadership and
you don’t have to be the boss to be the
leader leadership of what you do what do
you
how do you evaluate achievements
wrongdoings how to criticize how bravely
you act and and creating the the way you
want to look the way what is your goal
what is your company image you think and
that is trans trans fairing a little bit
feeling of belongingness to the gang of
owning the gang if this is my gang it’s
not the gang that I kind of a sign on
the membership I have a beautiful garden
they these guys are like no no it’s my
gang and that releases there any
restrictions of my efforts to do what
I’m doing because this I’m doing it for
me not for the guys not for the show’s
yes holders as well but I’m doing
because I’m excited I’m passionate it
and I I love what I do so final slide
for for me does it really work it’s a
journey it’s I couldn’t say that we have
achieved something but we have some
achievements and the fact of this year
that we are growing double-digit above
the market at the same time we have
landed or went live with to enterprise
scale IT projects like ERP and CRM
probably if you are familiar with that I
can talk about them a little bit later
in the and in the post time so they have
done actually impossible from the
conventional point of view of the of the
business that in one growing like hell
doing the internal focus for the father
for the 80 projects is impossible it
would be impossible if it was not true
and this is everything because of the
guys owning it they own the idea of
surviving for the gang survival and of
course I’m taking the responsibility I’m
two minutes away but I’m taking the
responsibility to say thank you the one
the the members of the team which are
here or which are looking online so I’m
really proud to be a part of you again
so the last thing we are discussing what
to tell how to summarize
at all we know that in one period or the
other of life you will start looking for
the new job so don’t hunt just the title
don’t look just in the digits of the
salary they’re offering think about the
culture of the company you want to
belong to think if you will be accepted
there and if you will enjoy with all the
crowd of people come together and do
unlimited results thank you
be passionate on what you do
[Applause]
