What will we be eating in the future? | Miya Ferisse | TEDxCanadianIntlSchool

hi everyone so raise your hand if you’ve

eaten something during the last 24 hours

well I can see it on your face you’re

thinking well of course meow you saw me

at the canteen and 24 hours is a pretty

long time so obviously yeah obviously

well did you know that more than one out

of ten people in the world are starving

right now and according to the FAO or

1.3 billion tons of food are thrown away

each year

it’s represent 14 million square

kilometer of field that goes to trash

it’s bigger than the area of Europe so

yes our food system is not efficient yes

our population is increasing and no our

planet is not extensible today I’m here

to talk about the future of our food and

I will be presenting you five types of

innovation that we might see in a close

future some of them already exist as

well and they are here to transform our

food system to make it more efficient or

to fit the needs of the future

population and I hope that you’re not

eating anything right now because you

might want to put your snacks away

during this presentation ready let’s get

into it

have you ever watched matrix the movie

yeah do you remember that moments when

neo wakes up and he realized that

actually every human is kept alive

through a lot of tubes that go all over

their bodies

this scene remember okay this might have

inspired an engineer and he did the same

thing but for chickens

so it would be matrix for four chickens

and it will look like this it’s a

vertical chicken forms and what’s

happening there is that each chickens

would have their cerebral cortex remove

so they wouldn’t feel any stress any

feeling or any pain it would pretty much

become cultivated vegetables but made

out of meat

you can see a lot of tubes that go all

over here and these would take care of

the air the food the excrement of those

birds and they would still be able to

grow because their brainstem will be

kept and this would be done through

electrical stimulation controlled by

computers so this has a lot of

advantages for example the yield

production is extremely high and these

birds wouldn’t have wouldn’t be stressed

out due to car crowded area just like

we’re seeing in our food system current

food system however this still raises a

lot of problem ethically are we allowed

to play with those birds live in this

way we don’t know we’re things still

thinking about it but who knows maybe in

a close future right but this could help

us with our increasing meat consumption

and as you may or may not know our

livestock nowadays produce 16 percent of

our carbon emission so this would also

reduce our carbon footprint so a lot of

advantages right however it’s not the

first time that human tried to literally

grow meat just like we would grow plants

this leads us to our second innovation

the in vitro steaks you might have heard

of this one it’s pretty recent the first

one was done in 2013 what is it it’s a

little piece of meat that have been

produced in a laboratory and it took six

weeks to produce this one and it’s only

cows muscle cells that have been

replicated over and over and yeah and

guess how much it costs to just produce

one a thousand ten thousand a hundred

thousand yeah ten thousand it’s actually

cost three hundred twenty-five thousand

US dollar and this was done in 2013 now

gets not how much it costs right now

1,100 it’s actually closed only twelve

dollars and this shows how much our

technology can improve over time right

according to the food expert the taste

is actually not the same as the one we

have right now but the texture is really

realistic and again it has a lot of

advantages well first it’s really

economic you don’t have to feed the cows

you don’t have to give them water and

the animal would not suffer so maybe

even vegetarians might accept to eat

those types of meat and again it would

help us with our increasing carbon

footprint let’s leave the meat for a

second ok let’s speak about something

else let’s speak about movie because I

like movies have you watched this movie

Solent Green it’s a pretty old one 1973

some of you ok yeah some of you have to

watch this ok so it’s really interesting

because it speaks about the future in

2022 and how our population would

replace our normal meal by some little

pills that would be called Soylent Green

and those little pills would completely

replace all our nutritious needs so this

might have inspired an engineer who did

a little bit the same thing but with a

Potter called Soylent so this powder

would just be mixed with some water and

it would contain the perfect balance of

minerals vitamins and proteins and this

engineer tried it on himself for one

month so one month every day three times

a day

Soylent well first day he survived which

is pretty cool second thing he said that

he never felt as good as before so I

made some research there because I

thought it’s a little bit weird why are

we still eating food if we have silence

it’s the solution of all our problem

and the reason is pretty simple a lot of

people have tried it and they gave up

after one or two weeks why because they

were becoming depressed or moody or

aggressive towards other people

according to food expert the art brain

really needs to choose something and to

spend a minimum of 20 minutes for each

meals to feel completely satisfied so

sadly this type of food might not

develop a lot in the future however it

could act as a life saver for example

after natural disaster because it’s

really easy to transport and it’s really

affordable and you just mix it with

water and you just get Soylent pretty

easy right okay I’ll make you guess my

first product to billion people on earth

already eat them so it’s not an

innovation we’ve been doing it since a

long time and as we as we living in

Southeast Asia you might have already

vegetables it’s sex yay yay yummy right

okay I’ll just because they look at big

girls I’ll just cover them with the

pictures of my last trip in Cambodia and

you can see us trying fried tarantula

and you can see how pleased I look among

the right-hand side corner it’s not that

good but the grasshoppers actually

tastes pretty good should try them so do

the insect that we eat the most in the

world are beetles grasshoppers and

caterpillars okay and however the ritual

culture they don’t really want to try

them because they look a little bit

gross and we’re not really attracted by

their appearance

however they’re slowly being introduced

for example in my home country in

Switzerland we have our first burgers

made out of mealworms these are mere

ones that have been sold this year in

August and you can find them everywhere

it’s really easy to buy them so yeah

they’re slowly being introduced and

again they have a huge amount of

advantages for example did you know that

they have the same nutritional value

than the meat when it comes to proteins

and they’re the insect are really easy

to grow if you take ten kilograms of

cereal you’d be able to produce one

kilograms of meat but with the same 10

kilograms of cereal you’d produce 9

kilograms of grasshoppers so really easy

to grow and the yield production is

completely different

so a lot of advantages and now let’s

speak about the last innovation I’m

gonna present you and for me it’s the

most interesting one why because we

might see them in a really close future

and because some people are already

using them if I tell you 3d printers

what do you think about plastics are

there any other materials yeah well did

you know that we have some 3d printers

that produce food Wow yeah the first one

who were interested by this was the NASA

why because they wanted their astronauts

to eat something their friend from food

space spacesuit in the in in space so

they financed an engineer and well he

tried it and guess what was his first

product his first meal that he produced

corn no nice try it was pizza and it

actually makes sense right you build it

layer by

lair and it worked so now at the NASA is

using them here in space but it’s even

becoming a trend for example in some

restaurants around the world they’re

producing some food that only that I

only produce it by 3d printers I’ve done

some research we might have one soon in

Singapore it’s not sure yet but we might

but you know what this engineer doesn’t

want to stop there he has bigger dreams

and what he wants to do is to nourish

the ten billion people that might be on

this planet by the end of 2001 so 2100

it sounds pretty far from us doesn’t it

a lot of us might not be here anymore

and until then we’ll face a lot of

challenges when it comes to the way we

produce the way we manage or the way we

consume more food just like we’ve had a

lot of challenges in the past decades so

tonight when you go back home and maybe

you’re gonna be with your family maybe

with a friend maybe by yourself and when

you’re gonna go and eat your dinner I

want you to think to imagine what will

your meal look like in ten years

thank you very much [Applause]
