Knowledge We Have, Education We Need | Dr. Radi Abouelhassan | TEDxCCQ

this is my daughter Samia few weeks ago
we went to the door her kids festival
and I got her this massive piece of
candy thinking that there is so much
sugar I requested a piece of it this
little pink dot in the middle of her
hand is what she offered me I thought
that we need to discuss sharing so I
told her that when you have something
you need to share it with others this
will make you happy this will make other
people happy about you and at the end
people will give you a day of what they
have and then you’ll end up having more
than what you have I was satisfied with
the explanation until the next day as we
were eating supper on the table there
was bread butter and soup
I accidentally placed the bread in front
of her and I reached my hand to take a
piece of it and she said now this is
mine I told her how come this is for
everybody to share she said mama please
you kiss it in front of me so it is mine
I told her we discussed sharing
yesterday so you need to share with
people of what you have so she gave me a
little piece almost the same size of the
cotton candy that she gave me the
previous day I thought after the first
encounter and explaining to my daughter
sharing the concept of sharing I thought
that I hated her about it but the fact
is that I just gave her knowledge about
the concept of sharing so education is a
two-way process or are two dimensional
places on the one side we have the
teaching instruction and guidance from
the teacher and when the other side or
should be learning learning when it
comes to skills and ethics and morals
can be a little tricky because we need
it to be more than just knowing what the
concept is we needed to be entrenched in
the individual to the extent that the
individual can act naturally according
to this concept when we teach
individuals about something we tell them
what something is we give them the
knowledge about it do you think that
knowledge is enough no because when they
have knowledge they know what the Khans
is but it doesn’t mean it is
internalized inside them by
internalization I mean that the
individual will develop this scale to be
part of who they are we need those
skills to be part of who we are because
we want them to overcome our appeals and
desires also when we talk about skills
we need them to overcome certain
intellectual and cognitive deficiencies
that we are born with to give you an
example think of the appeal think of the
challenge that the child has to go
through in order for her to give a piece
of her cotton candy first of all her
favorite color is pink and the cotton
candy is pink so there is the appeal of
color also the cotton candy is very
sweet and she likes sugar so there is
the appeal of taste in order for her to
give something to an another person the
love for sharing has to be entrenched
inside her to a level at least as much
as the appeal of the cotton candy there
are other factors as well there are like
the psychological factors for example at
this age children will be developing a
sense of who they are but the issue
becomes more serious when you talk about
grown-ups because for kids we talk about
Appeals for grown-ups would talk about
desires and mania and we talk about ego
when you talk about the psychological
factors so we need those appeals and
desires stand in the way of us doing the
right thing so we need to build skills
to be part of who you are these are the
morals and ethics to challenge those
appeals also we need to build skills to
compensate for the intellectual
deficiencies that we are born with so
teaching doesn’t lead to that teaching
just gives us information about what our
concept is how many times has it
happened to you that you go talk to
somebody try to give them an advice
about something and sometimes you call
to them some verses from the holy texts
and then you realize that they know
everything you know about the concept
but they are not acting accordingly and
this happens with many of us is not only
about children but it’s also for
grownups another concept which is more
practical than the concept
teaching is a concept with instruction
which is about giving the knowledge of
how something works or how to do a
certain thing but again this does this
does not lead to learning because after
individuals practice something for a
period of time they forget it because it
stays for a short time in the active
memory which is very limited we need
more time we need more practice in order
for this skill or concept to move from
the limited active memory to the
expansive or long-term memory the
concept that leads to learning by
definition and practice is the concept
of apprenticeship by definition
apprenticeship comes from the Latin word
apprehend er which means learn from this
word came other words such as
apprehension and comprehension which all
indicate understanding by practice
apprenticeship has been used in business
to train individuals to be experts in a
certain field or discipline it has also
been used in graduate schools to teach
individuals students to be active
members of a certain community or add
discipline the interesting thing about
apprenticeship is is that it helps us
learn the concepts and to be part of who
we are and reduce the amount of
cognitive load that we put in order for
us to exert a certain action there is
evidence there that a key difference
between expert chess players and now
it’s just players is that the expert
chess players have developed over the
years a database of board configurations
that help them predict which moves will
be more successful than others in other
words expert chess players exert less
cognitive effort than the novice ones
and that’s what happens with us when we
talk about skills like life skills
cognitive skills academic skills or
morals or ethics if they are entrenched
entrenched in us we act naturally and
unconsciously apprenticeship in that
sense it is very similar to an Arabic
concept which is tur BIA
terapia is also means education and
similar to the English word education
it means teaching instruction and more
and means raising a child which means
going over periods of time to raise a
child which is similar to apprenticeship
so they both apprenticeship and tur beer
includes certain activities that help
the individual learn the concept and
internalize it first of all we need
explicit instruction you need to tell
the individual today we’re talking about
telling the truth or today we are
talking about this life skill and then
after that this is when you’re given the
teaching and the instruction you give
them the knowledge of the word and the
knowledge of the hell after that comes
guidance and guidance you do the action
yourself when whenever there are
opportunities to do so and you by the
individuals themselves to do the
activities what if there are no natural
activities or situations in which those
skills happen you need to create events
in which you teach those skills through
the individuals first of all of course
we need to come up with a list for every
situation with a were talking about
children or grownups we need to come up
with a list of skills to teach in order
for us to create those unnatural
situations after that comes practice and
practice will aid the individuals learn
from their their own mistakes under the
guidance of adults for example we teach
them something
then we guide them how to do it we talk
to them first about it we got him how to
do we let them practice make mistakes
learn from their mistakes make mistakes
again and so on the most important
element here which distinguishes or
makes apprenticeship very distinct is
the concept of time if we teach children
something and we don’t give him time to
internalize it internalization or
learning is not going to happen
back to the story of my daughter I she
refused to give me the butter the bread
because it was in front of her so I took
the butter and put it in front of me I
told him okay told her okay now the
butter is mine and the bread is viewers
show me how you’re going to eat your
bread or you can eat it without butter
then I told her now if you want some
butter you need to give me some of your
bread so she gave me a little more piece
and I was satisfied with it but do you
think she internalized it you think if
you meet her sometime in the break for
example and ask her for something she’s
gonna give it to you no first of all I
know my child secondly I haven’t given
her enough time to internalize the
concept itself so we can use we can use
apprenticeship with the child with
children at home to teach the models and
to teach them real life skills morals as
I said such as telling the truth
such as taking care of themselves or
telling the truth and so on whether we
are aware or not there are many
opportunities in our life in which we
can use as natural situations for
teaching morals and ethics to our
children once I was doing interviews
with participants in a study and I
noticed something interesting I noticed
there is a connection between the
responses of the participants and the
behavior of the children I was doing
this interview with a woman who migrated
from Africa to the US as a single mother
through the course of interview I
realized that she had had a difficult
life there said her daughter patiently
doing a project after another project
after another project I was amazed how
patient this child was so I asked the
mother do you talk to your children
about difficulties that you had in your
life she said yes I tell them that you
need to be patient you are not going to
get everything you want life is not
going to give you everything you better
be patient so there are many
opportunities for us to use in our
household what if there are no
opportunities we need to create those
opportunities there was this great
caliph of the Umayyads his name Abdul
Malik bin marwan many of you probably
know about him he told the teacher of
his children teach them trustworthiness
and telling the truth the same way you
teach them the Quran and then he gave
them a list of skills
and practices if he does they would help
him in doing that he told him that you
gotta teach it the same way you teach
them the Quran how do we teach the Quran
to children first of all they listen to
somebody doing it and then we told him
this is how you do it and then we let
them practice it over time over and over
overtime and tell a daily learning this
is how we need to approach ethics and
morals as well as other skills with our
children at home at schools we can use
it for academics skills or we can use it
for real life skills that skills that
they need after they finish their
schools what are the skills that we need
to teach our children at schools we need
to teach them how to make conclusions
inferences how to make decisions how to
answer detail-oriented questions we can
use apprenticeship to teach the children
detail-oriented question as well as
other higher higher thinking skills
think about world war one this is a
topic presented in many high schools
high school institutions in addition to
telling them about the details of World
War one number of people who died the
rivals rival countries how the world
started and how the war ended we can do
other things with them few weeks ago
there was this article in the online
newspaper USA Today the article was
titled world war 1 a hundred years after
the article part of its content was
reasons why the war could not be avoided
one of the reasons mentioned there was
that there were no communication
channels between the rivals we can use
this article to teach it in addition to
the textbooks we have we can ask the
students now read this article and tell
us what are the reasons or what are the
things that we have today that can help
a war like World War 1 be stopped
whether the students could get the
answer right or wrong that’s not the
point
even if they don’t get it we need to
tell them it is about creating channels
but the important thing
is what are we going to do with those
answers over this fact here we told him
now we want you to work on a project to
see how the world today can avoid world
war another world war what are the
channels that we have today that could
work and are they effective or not
this is a lifelong skill that
individuals need to build because they
need to do research they need to look at
actual situations and draw conclusions
made decisions more importantly we can
ask them to reflect on themselves and
their communities how about you are you
building channels of communication with
people around you as an individual now I
want you to go out to your friends and
peers your neighbors show me the
channels of communication that you have
with them or what are the conflicts that
you have with some of them and how can
you build channels of communication that
can help you this is the lifelong skill
that I am talking about here given the
complexity of War the world today we
have many challenges economical
challenges political challenges and
social challenges what are the skills
you think that we need to teach our
children all of those skills are
reflected in the way we teach today or
not we need to come up with the skills
and I cannot provide you with a list of
skills that we need to teach that’s what
we need to do as communities we need to
think of what are the skills that we
need our students to learn and then we
we plant those skills into our
curriculum and create real-life
situations to give our students the
opportunities to practice those skills
themselves lifelong skills that I’m
talking about for example building
bridges with others is one of the skills
how about you grown-ups do you think
that we don’t need apprenticeship in our
lives actually we do probably more than
many others if I ask you how many of you
including myself how many of you have
something about yourself that you’re not
happy about and you think if you change
it your life is going to be better many
people and how many of us know how to
change it how to go about it
then we got the knowledge and we got the
instruction we got the knowledge of what
and we got the knowledge of how but why
aren’t we changing ourselves it is
simply because we haven’t walked the
walk so we got the knowledge but we
haven’t walked the walk so we need to
put our selves in situations we need to
put ourselves in situations to practice
those changes that we need to take and
we put them into action what if you
don’t know you are not happy in your
life and you don’t know you need
somebody to apprentice you and I can
provide you with one
tip and this is part of giving you the
knowledge which is what and how
first of all riff reflect on your life
think about a time when you were happy
about yourself and compare yourself now
to that time what are the differences
between you then and now what are other
things that change maybe certain things
that you used to do but you don’t do
them anymore
maybe certain things that you didn’t do
but you do them maybe somebody who
wasn’t in your life and came to be part
of your life or maybe somebody who was
in your life and left your life so now
we got the knowledge if you find out the
answer you get the knowledge and then
you need to think about ways to work
with this knowledge if it’s about a
person who was in your life and left
then you need to find ways to bring this
person back to your life or an
alternative if it’s somebody who wasn’t
in your life and became part of your
life then you need to do something about
it in conclusion whether it is about
teaching morals effects to our children
or teaching students at schools or
teaching ourselves to be better people
the issue is not about knowledge for
many of the issues that we have we have
the knowledge it is effective education
that we need we need education about
tarbiyah and apprenticeship thank you [Applause]
