Lessons Learned from Helping Others | Aisha Al-Kuwari | TEDxCCQ

and ten-second I want you to do

something look to the person next to you

how does it feel

hi everyone my name is Shannon kawari

and I’m happy to be with you tonight

how helping others can make us happy

there are so many ways we can help but

the real question is what makes you

happy

to be able to help for me it’s the three

things volunteering interact with the

people and health benefits the Indian

activists Mahatma Gandhi said the best

way to find yourself is to lose yourself

in the service of others the definition

of volunteering when you do something

with that getting paid in 2014 I had to

do 25 of community service of ours at

that time I had no experience and I

didn’t know how it felt until I actually

tried it I engaged with toddlers or

babies and Hamet hospitals I learn it

how to be sorry I gain it experience and

they taught me two important things how

to be patients and how to always smile

and then I ask it myself I said why I

had to do community service and then I

said because the community always give

you what you want and at the time you

give it back and also behind that it

creates connections for the future maybe

a dream job want someone like you moving

on to my second major point and that is

interact with the people how many of you

traveled outside the country and got

misunderstood because of something you

said or you did it happens right all the

time even in our daily life let me tell

you a short story I traveled with my

sister to Japan and I told her when we

go to some restaurants it’s required for

us to take

take our shoes off she was so surprised

and I think she did not believe me

actually but when she saw it in her own

eyes she looked at me and said you’re

right I smiled that will be really

disrespectful for the Japanese culture

if you do not take off your shoes

another example the word of a name it

means mother and Turkish language what

if I tell you it also means sister and

Korean language isn’t that interesting

this is why having a high level of

cultural awareness is important when I

interact with the people I gain it

experience and also and made me

confidence comparing myself now and

before I was not the same girl I always

isolated myself from bigger crowd

because I was shy and not confident but

let me tell you this I truly regret that

like so truly I regret that because why

when you interact with the people you

will meet different type of people

different culture religion race gender

and so on and when you interact with

them you will gain knowledge and

information and that knows maybe it will

benefit for your future or maybe end up

in your carrier moving on to my last

major point and that is what I truly

love and that is health benefits

did you know helping someone can reduce

your tension if you ask me how I would

love to tell you how I remember that day

like it was yesterday

and I had a bad day I couldn’t wait to

leave the campus but her voice kept me

from believing the campus she said as

there is someone who can help me to

register for the course I look at her

and I smiled I said I can help you we

went to the library I showed her how to

register all she wanted is someone to

help her to register for the course

and all I wanted to do what I love to do

and that is helping we said goodbye to

each other but I met her after couple of

days ago it was embarrassing actually

conversation because I did not recognize

her but they say small change can have a

big impact and when I say can have a big

impact

she truly Remember Who I am even when

it’s a small thing but that she

understand how I was helping her and

what is them it made me feel very

satisfied so pleased I found my passion

through helping interact with the people

and health benefits please find yours

don’t wait for someone to give you a

signal to help start engaging with the

community because that will benefit you

your health and the community thank you

so much for listening [Applause]
