[Music]
these celebrities give speeches that
leave us totally speechless
I’ve just been nominated 789 times and I
was getting so settled over there for a
long winters nap welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re counting
down our picks for the top ten people
who give the best awards show speeches
before we begin we publish new content
every day so be sure to subscribe to our
channel and ring the bell to get
notified about our latest videos for
this list we’re looking at celebrities
who consistently offer up the most
engaging inspiring or hilarious speeches
at award shows
number 10 Jon Stewart it’s our first
callback of the night from 1999 to 2015
this comedian and commentator was at the
helm of The Daily Show four nights a
week showing just what a great speaker
he can be Jon Stewart has plenty of
experience in front of a live audience
so it should come as no surprise that he
totally kills it on the awards show
stage every year on our anniversary I
try to get her a prestigious award
and and every year I fail his particular
brand of satirical humor works well for
a variety of different crowds and
whether it’s at the Emmys or the Peabody
Awards he’s always able to make viewers
at home laugh right along with him
number nine Adele I’m Tuffy I love you
for your amazing journeys promos I love
you as well if you’ve ever heard any of
Adele’s music you know she can really
dig deep when it comes to her emotions
while she isn’t known for making a ton
of public appearances she does always
bring her AGame when it comes to
accepting Awards which happens pretty
often Oh honestly I’ve come out for a
night out with my friend there where new
mums we’ve literally come for a night
out I was not expecting this thank you
so much and she always bears her most
raw feelings to the audience in 2017
when Adele was up for album of the year
against Beyonce’s groundbreaking record
lemonade she took the time in her
acceptance speech to give credit to her
fellow musician and even broke the award
in half in order to demonstrate her
feelings I’m very gracious my artist of
my life is beyond saying this album for
me the lemonade album was just so
monumental Beyonce number 8 Frances
McDormand I really sincerely thank you
this because I love my job I love my job
Frances McDormand has been in the
business for years but she may not have
become a household name until very
recently in early 2018 McDormand managed
to pretty much sweep awards season in
the Best Actress category for her role
in three billboards outside ABing
Missouri I’m gonna keep it short because
we’ve been here a long time and we need
some tequila all you ladies in this
category Bar tequila’s on me she
delivered humbling and funny speeches at
the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards but
her most notable speech was at the
Academy Awards in the midst of all the
discussion about gender equality in
Hollywood McDormand asked all the female
nominees in the audience to stand with
her in a powerful moment that marked the
night the whole idea of women trending
no no trending african-americans
trending
no no trending it changes now and I
think the inclusion writer will have
something to do with that
number seven Angelina Jolie and Jamie my
brother I love you so much and I have
nothing just yours over the years this
actresses award show speeches have been
notable for a wide variety of different
reasons she sometimes aims to shock and
awe but in more recent years her words
have been poignant ones that have
highlighted her dedication to a variety
of charitable causes I just had to see
the view from in 2014 she was awarded
the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at
the Oscars and displayed a sense of
poise and grace that stood out to
viewers now known just as much for her
nonprofit ventures as for her on-screen
prowess we can’t wait to see how her
speeches continue to evolve every woman
has a right not only to independence and
security but to live her life to the
full and to express herself to the full
number six Tom Hanks can you think of
anyone in Hollywood who’s better liked
than this guy Tom Hanks charmed everyone
around him as well as at home audiences
and his award show speeches just
exemplify how darn likable he is if you
do your hard gun well enough if you love
it enough and if you throat meet baby
you’ll sleep in peace and you awake in
joy when accepting a Golden Globe Award
for his role in big in 1989 Hanks took
the time to give credit to the young
actor who he worked with on the film all
while totally cracking the crowd up a
very very talented young man as an actor
but he’s also a real pleasant young guy
which is kind of new for kids over the
years he’s accepted a great number of
awards and whether it’s accepting an
Oscar a Golden Globe or an AFI Life
Achievement Award Hanks always brings
his personable self to the stage I have
great reason to say god bless you all
god bless america thank you
number five Viola Davis and let me tell
you something the only thing that
separates women of color from anyone
else is opportunity while some actors
use the platform they are given when
they accept an award to make the
audience laugh or give a heartfelt
thanks to the people who have supported
them
Viola Davis almost always takes the
opportunity to make a political
statement that our lives mattered as
african-americans the horse groomer the
sanitation worker the people who grew up
under the heavy boot of Jim Crow she
uses her powerful voice to bring up
issues about race gender and class and
how they relate to Hollywood these are
topics that can never get too much
exposure and her words always make us
consider the underlying factors at play
that may not have been at the forefront
of our minds before her speech began I
truly believe that the privilege of a
lifetime is being who you are and I just
recently embraced that at 51 number 4
Will Ferrell no no you have to go to the
bathroom I asked you backstage if you
have to go to the bathroom okay
so you’re just gonna have to hold it
okay this is the Emmys don’t blow this
for me one of the funniest guys in the
business is bound to deliver some great
award show speeches Will Ferrell spent
some of his formative years on Saturday
Night Live so he knows how to roll with
the punches while making people roll
around with laughter he comes in the
horsey she looks at the town it’s
sometimes hard to differentiate Ferrell
from the hilarious characters he tends
to play and to be honest he may be at
his funniest when he’s acting as himself
while he has made incredible appearances
at major shows like the Emmys and the
Golden Globes one of our favorite
speeches he has ever made has to be when
accepting the Mark Twain prize in 2011 I
will find a place of honor in my house
for this magnificent bust
if my children try to touch it or even
look at it I will beat them
number three Meryl streak I would like
to thank BAFTA for this wonderful honor
as one of the most heavily nominated and
awarded actors of our age Meryl Streep
has had plenty of opportunities to speak
at award shows throughout her career
well I didn’t have anything prepared
because it’s been like since the
Pleistocene era that I want any time and
no matter the occasion she manages to be
both warm and full of humility in
January of 2017 just months after Donald
Trump is elected Streep was presented
with the Cecil B deMille Award at the
Golden Globes and took the opportunity
not to focus on her own career but
rather to give a rousing speech about
the current political climate though
she’s made an impact many times over the
years this instance has to be the most
notable so Hollywood is crawling with
outsiders and foreigners and if we kick
them all out you’ll have nothing to
watch but football and mixed martial
arts which are not the Arts
number two Oprah Winfrey so I want all
the girls watching here now to know that
a new day is on the horizon it’s tough
to follow up Meryl
but when Oprah was given the Cecil B
deMille Award when year after Streep was
we know she was the only person who
could possibly show up the previous
year’s speech with her own daytime talk
show running from 1986 to 2011
Oprah is no stranger to public speaking
and always manages to come off as
fiercely intelligent yet somehow
relatable what I know for sure is that
speaking your truth is the most powerful
tool we all have she can make the
audience laugh while empowering them to
action always straddling the line
between entertaining and inspiring for
too long women have not been heard or
believed if they dared to speak their
truth to the power of those men but
their time is up can we please make
Oprah 2020 happen before we unveil our
top pick here are a few honorable
mentions I know this looks like I spend
lonely Friday nights just voting for
myself look it’s I didn’t I mean I
didn’t vote for myself there’s a lot of
Friday nights I’m home by myself and I
said to him daddy do you know Brad Pitt
I’m going to be in a movie with him
and he said I don’t know him personally
but I’m glad you got a job I’d like to
thank her my family number 1 Robin
Williams normally they look at comedians
is like very special people thank you
very much and you allow us to be in the
room with the adults you nominators even
have a category for us comedy and
dancing one of the entertainment
industry’s greatest treasures left us
far too soon Robin Williams was
undeniably one of the funniest figures
to ever grace our screens and parlayed
his incredible humor to everything he
did excepting since it was only a voice
accepting for mr. Williams will be
his primary asset was certainly his
comedy it was always clear that there
was a lot of heart behind everything he
said and did his speeches and award
shows over the years condensed all the
best parts of his personality and are
perpetually rewatchable I’m just
thanking everybody now it’s just like
spewing out Dustin I’d like to thank
Steven back up since his death in 2014
we’ve only come to appreciate his
speeches even more do you agree with our
picks check out these other great clips
