welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
counting down our picks for the top 10
movies about wrestling well I got some
footage for you I don’t want them let me
see this because nobody knows Canada
like I knows Canada for this list we’re
looking at movies that feature wrestling
as a major plot point is it for this you
brought me from patins this circus what
have you done to wrestling a movie like
man on the moon though fantastic and
fascinating for any wrestling fan
doesn’t make the cut as it’s not
primarily focused on the sport don’t
worry mom I’ll make it rad both amateur
and professional wrestling related films
were up for consideration but not
armwrestling
so we’re gonna have to disappoint you
over-the-top fans let’s start the
competition good luck
we’ve also left out documentaries
released by the WWE since they’re in
another weight class and if you’re in
the ring and you can make someone look
better than they really are people want
to work with you number 10 ready to
rumble we are to small town sanitation
workers live their lives for wrestling
WCW and Monday night nitro his wasted
his entire life wrestling he could have
been a doctor well an ambulance driver
leave when they witnessed their favorite
tough guy get the soundest beating of
his career they take it upon themselves
to get him back to the top of his game
with all the training sequences
one-liners and toilet humor that entails
obilic sucks hey Billy losses write
nothing up kick him in his left nut when
you see him again you see bite starring
Oliver Platt Scott Caan and real-life
wrestling enthusiast and one-time
wrestler David Arquette this movie
features a mix of actors and real
wrestlers in an attempt to produce a
love letter to the sport give it a stir
all Konya gym fans liked it more than
the critics but how can you not fall for
a movie that has a crotch shot montage
over the end credits go number 9 requiem
for a heavyweight anybody ever tell you
what a punch of a guy you were starring
legendary actors like Anthony Quinn
Jackie Gleason and Mickey Rooney as well
as the Giant wrestler known as haystacks
Calhoun and a young man named Cassius
Clay great fight here
you were great requiem for a heavyweight
definitely has the cast necessary to
produce a good wrestling movie do you
I’m a big ugly slob and I look like a
freak but I was almost the heavyweight
champion of the world
but there’s more to love than just the
acting focusing on a boxer who’s tried
and failed to make a better life for
himself the film sees the athlete
entered the wrestling world to make ends
meet and save his friend a move he sees
as a step down
[Applause]
remember you don’t have to know how
couple always you like the whole this
film likely would have ranked higher had
it depicted the wrestling world in a
more positive light but its stellar
performances and writing and sure it
earns its place why me why did you been
against me
number eight no-holds-barred not only
was this WWE produced film the first
starring role for Hulk Hogan was also a
watershed moment in the history of
wrestling despite the negative critical
reception it received yeah I know don’t
patronize me
the Hulkster plays rip Thomas a
massively popular wrestler whose brother
is pummeled and sent to the hospital by
the villainous Zeus
so as you can probably imagine the film
climaxes with an epic confrontation
[Music]
though it wasn’t a huge success it
targeted wrestling fans with a tumor and
action and today is one of those movies
that’s hilarious
in spite of itself even Hulk’s delivery
of a simple one-word line has become
infamous for fans of wrestling number 7
nacho libre when you are a man sometimes
you wear stretchy pants in your room
he’s for fun many of you may be shocked
to learn that the plot of this film is
loosely based on a real-life Mexican
priest fray tormenta who wrestled in
Lucha Libre to support an orphanage
orphans listen to me listen to Ignacio I
know it is fun to wrestle and I spiraled
right to the face or a punch to the face
but you cannot do it starring Jack Black
as a priest who makes the same decision
this film is played for laughs more than
feels but lucha fans are likely to enjoy
the in-ring action as well I’m not
listening to you you only believe in
science that’s probably why we never win
we never win because you are fat
portraying the athletic events as
legitimate fights there are ample
references to the reality of the
profession for adults to enjoy as well
as an underdog story for the kids giving
it something for everyone I’m not
listening to you you’re crazy
number 6 win win where’s daddy
he’s frowning
sometimes movie plots can be pretty
cliched but this film about mike an
attorney who moonlights is an amateur
wrestling coach and his relationship
with a young man named Kyle is not now
did you guys all see what Kyle did the
other day he exploded up right Kyle show
the guys what you did it’s kind of my
own thing the grandson of one of Mike’s
clients Kyle comes from a troubled home
and begins to see Mike as a father
figure hey you okay that is before the
truth rears its ugly head does she even
know you’re here
my mom she doesn’t care about me a
touching film about family and sacrifice
as well as how big an impact the
discipline of amateur wrestling can have
on a young life win-win is no loser
I just I don’t think that beating the
crap out of everybody is the best
solution that’s all it feels like it
number five the resurrection of Jake the
snake screwed the fans screw myself out
of my memories I was doing a whole life
want to see what professional wrestling
is really all about this is the
documentary for you in what can almost
be considered a sequel to beyond the mat
we see Jake the snake finally reach a
breaking point after years of drug and
alcohol abuse ultimately turning to his
friend and contemporary Diamond Dallas
Page for help recently been talking to
Jake quite a bit known for quite a
number of years he was one of my two
mentors Jake himself is as good a
central character to this film as you
could ever write full of personality and
a desire to succeed but cursed by inner
demons 1 for years what
you don’t act like this with three beers
and it’s called the accountability grip
through raising does this documentary
flip the genre on its ear with one
badass DDT no but sometimes a
straightforward and nostalgic story
following a down-and-out wrestlers
attempt at a comeback is all you need
and won’t we avoid every go be somebody
does care
number four beyond the mat it’s it fits
the wbf attitude showing the sacrifices
wrestlers must make in terms of their
health and their lives as well as the
struggles they go through beyond the mat
was originally made in conjunction with
the WWE meaning its behind-the-scenes
access was quite something you can a
place like this my god I could be mayor
here next week I wouldn’t be that I keep
the one I’ve got it is putting in power
I’m being a dictator mayor however Vince
McMahon eventually pulled his
endorsement of the film but that didn’t
stop fans from seeing and loving it I
tell you what mankind there’s something
about this whole situation that really
befuddled the rock because you see the
rockers are just so new you can dance on
the corner of no you’re wrong Boulevard
into a brony tribe a wrestling
documentary that can appeal even to non
wrestling fans beyond the mat is
universally praised as a thoughtful look
at the humans behind the in-ring
personalities really what you see what
you get
number three Hitman Hart wrestling with
shadows but people never come up and say
you’re a hell of an actor they always
taught me just go you’re a phony Bret
Hart the WWE Champion who signed a
20-year contract with the company for
good money but who was approached by
boss Vince McMahon and encouraged to go
elsewhere McMahon talked to me about
changing my character he wants me to
turn he’ll become a bad guy at first I
was lukewarm to the idea since Vince
said he couldn’t afford him the Hitman
made a deal with a competitor however he
was still champion and he needed to drop
the belt and therein the controversy
begins it’s almost like he’s gonna scoop
my heat this documentary coincidentally
captured all of the backstage
controversy on video including a
recording of McMahon lying to heart but
I’m opening our hands
like I said before undetermined right
well depicting what is arguably the most
controversial event in wrestling history
wrestling with shadows had unprecedented
access behind the scenes at the Montreal
Screwjob and as a result is an
absolutely amazing documentary number
two Foxcatcher coach is a mentor coach
has great power the film that changed
the way the world perceives Steve Carell
Foxcatcher was nominated for Oscars and
Golden Globes for good reason okay
ungrateful a portraying the relationship
between the wealthy and eccentric John
du Pont and the American amateur
wrestling team there is an Indecent
Proposal feeling to it all I’m getting
Dave I don’t care how much it costs
although the film is more of a true
crime drama than a sports flick the
wrestling world is its setting and is a
supporting character in its own right
acting is the element that drives the
plot forward when we fail to honor that
we should be honored it’s a problem it’s
canary in a coal mine ending in tragedy
for the team and the people involved
Foxcatcher is filled to the brim with
unique personalities and as a result is
an incredibly memorable wrestling film
like us to go to Seoul it’s done the
world before we unveil our number one
pick here are some honorable mentions
this is ridiculous this is the worst
thing I’ve ever seen in my life waiting
to I think it’s great little callable
why don’t the kids play like a wrestler
there are better ways we’d want you to
be happy now Victor won’t you get mad I
want you to get tough and I want you to
win Starkel Frankie start them
no one nothing left it him nothing
[Music]
I’m gonna go on with my wrestling
scholarship be pretty good then number
one
the wrestler you know the only place I
get hurt out there the world don’t give
a shit about me Randy the RAM Robinson’s
story is a cautionary tale for anyone
who’s on top of the world like several
other films on our list the wrestler
shows how far former wrestling stars can
fall but it also depicts what keeps them
coming back to their chosen sport again
and again he’s a loser he’s all true you
know what the only one I’m going to tell
me when I’m through doing my thing is
you Cleveland is when the RAM takes part
in a hardcore match featuring staplers
and lots of violence we see the toll it
can take on someone you know if you live
hard you play hard and you burned again
with both limbs can pay the price but
when he headlines the show in front of a
comparatively tiny crowd that utterly
embraces him we see just a small glimmer
of the love that passes between
wrestlers and their fans and we
understand what keeps them climbing back
between the ropes I just don’t want you
to hate me
do you agree with our list what’s your
favorite movie about wrestling a good
look at yourself in the mirror and then
say goodbye to what you see what do you
