Sound the Trumpets: Empire Isis has Arrived

sound the trumpets Empire Isis is here
to dominate hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
sitting down with international
phenomenon best known as Empire Isis so
you’ve got a very diverse cultural
background you want to tell us a bit
about it to be specific I’m British
Moroccan mother’s British my father’s
Moroccan and then after moving to Canada
from Morocco I was raised by my Ugandan
Yemeni stepfather how does this
background affect your music
specifically from a young age I always
had a sense of how I’m gonna reach
people you know I wanted to know about
everything from Botswana to Fiji to
kilimanjaro all it did for me was to
create this universe without boundaries
so I would say all these cultures around
me has just made it very like no limits
can you describe your music for us I
like to describe my music as
international mashup music if you want
me to get specific probably right now
I’m in the phase of mixing dancehall and
hip-hop roots R&B depending on who I’m
working with different sides of my
personality and influences that I’ve had
since I was younger will be coming out
my foundation for me is reggae music
it’s not a top 40 music okay reggae
music is a people music it attracts me
the fact that you could still say
something with Nene people will get it
and understand the intention or whatever
I’m not saying that I stick only to
reggae but a lot of what I do no matter
which style I approach there’s always
gonna be that foundation of reggae
underneath
Oh
you seem to keep a lot of control over
you know your career how and why if you
have kind of an understanding of who you
are and what it is that you’re bringing
to the table of your message it’s kind
of hard to let go of that I mean I
understand that this is a business and
you have to compromise I do have a
publishing deal they do get a cut you
gotta have consistency okay if you can
be a female and be consistent and hold
on to your creation you’re gonna be very
powerful you’ve been named you know best
upcoming artist best unsigned artist
what are these distinctions mean to you
when you’ve been working for many years
and you’re an independent artists you
sometimes can’t gauge your reach or help
people perceive you because you’re
always in the trenches you know trying
to get to that next Plateau but in in
all that change in and all that growth
externally people see things differently
so when you recognize externally like
that it’s a very big boost it’s like yes
okay I’m doing my job right then when
people find out more about this it just
opens more doors thank you very much
problem thank you for having me bless it
love
