speaking with Gil about his first solo
effort zach gill stuff you played with
alo and Jack Johnson can you describe
your solo effort it’s a real reflection
of my personality the guys in the van
say my solo shows like hanging out with
me in the van for 40 minutes it’s very
similar thing except i’m singing instead
of talking what i’m really enjoying
about playing solo right now is just the
flexibility of having just like me in an
audience I feel really happy to be there
with the audience and I feel like we’re
kind of making this thing together in
the past you know when you have a band
you’re always it’s kind of more like a
triangle but you know between like
making sure you’re aligned with the band
and align personally and then also
aligned with the audience and sometimes
you can get distracted from the audience
you know you kind of just close your
eyes whereas now I feel really in tune
with the audience I’m really enjoying
that how is playing with all those bands
affected your music now there’s that
expression I am a part of all I have met
which I always kind of took to me in
that like everything that you’ve
experienced kind of you know leading up
to this moment right now and it’s really
been that way with me haven’t had been
in collaborative musical projects with a
lot of the same people since I was 12
years old its incalculable how much it’s
influenced me in ways I don’t even know
it’s not too sure don’t wish you realize
trying to forgive
you’re a devoted father how was that
affected your music I was young when I
became a dad and I was really scared I
hadn’t even really held I was just out
of college and I hadn’t really even had
a real job but I definitely took the
perspective they’re like all right if
this is supposed to happen supposed to
happen you know I was a songwriter and I
was singing about life and I thought
well if I don’t embrace this thing fully
how will I ever be able to sing about
anything you know it’s like I gotta go
for this you know so so I did and there
were some tricky times you know and
forced me to make some decisions but I
was lucky that I always was able to keep
doing music kids are just great to be
around she reminds me that not to take
it too seriously that creativity is
birthright of all humans and kids know
it more than anybody I mean they just
like tap right into that creative spirit
and so sometimes when I’m feeling
untapped and I can just look at her and
just see like oh yeah it’s as easy as
just going in your room and just you
just start playing and I know we will
always begin
but a pro
