How to Stargaze

I
the night sky is filled with an infinite
amount of stars to study them can seem a
bit daunting hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Andrew físicas otherwise
known as the night sky guy and he’ll be
telling us how to start our stargazing
hobby tell us about stargazing how do we
begin well you know really astronomy is
one of those hobbies where it you don’t
have to spend any money to start off all
you need is your pair of eyes and your
fascination with the universe to be able
to find what you’re looking for in the
sky you’ll need some star charts and
atlas is a good star Atlas i would
suggest definitely starting off with a
good guidebook there are many out there
one of the most popular ones in the
entire world is Nightwatch by terrence
dickinson a good pair of binoculars is
the next equipment after just using your
eyes in learning the night sky tell us
about stargazing groups local astronomy
clubs which are everywhere in the world
is a great resource because folks that
are in there from all walks of life
there share one passion and that’s the
universe looking at the universe because
they have this passion they are going to
have very good equipment probably the
best type of equipment that you can
really look at the universe with they’re
more than happy to really welcome
newbies to come in take a look if you
want to advance and do even more you
know advanced research type of stuff as
well a hobby club is a great place to
start now that we’ve got our telescope
where do we point it what you need to do
is learn the constellations and do
what’s called star hopping and hopping
from one constellation to the next and a
wonderful place to start is the Big
Dipper most people are familiar in the
northern hemisphere at least with the
Big Dipper it’s a guide really too many
other constellations what will we see
when we look at this guy literally the
sky is the limit because you can see
things like for instance the North Pole
of Mars you can see the ice polar cap of
Mars through a telescope you can peer
beyond our galaxy and see other galaxies
that
are over a billion light years away it’s
taken light a billion years to get here
so when you’re looking up in the sky
through a telescope you’re looking back
in time and a telescope can really be
thought of as a time machine your
personal time machine to looking back at
the history of the universe
