Don Ferguson Discusses Air Farce, Roger Abbott

this comedy troupe Lampoon’s celebrities
politicians and everyone in between an
acronym which is a word form from the
initial letter of a descriptive phrase
like scuba or laser or milf hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Don Ferguson of the Royal Canadian
Air Force to learn how this show became
an iconic part of Canadian culture what
do you think it is about Air Farce that
kind of embedded you in Canadian culture
the simple answer to that is because it
lasted a long time that’s really what a
lot of what culture is you know is that
it just like wallpaper you know if you
grow up in a house with this wallpaper
in the living room somehow that becomes
part of you as your as you’re growing up
but I think the success of Air Farce we
really owe that to our ability to listen
when we were the Jets aside even before
we came here for us we were an
improvised comedy show and we only had
half a show then we’d ask the audience
at the end of the first day what would
you like to see in the second half and
almost invariably the audience wanted to
know stuff that was kind of in the news
it could be serious news it could be
celebrity gossip news it could be
something that happened in sports and
basically that’s all we did our entire
career is listen for the audience they
didn’t ask for comedy that was
fictitious character is living
fictitious lives so they wanted to see
what quotes real people did like
politicians or celebrities or whatever
and so we became impersonators and
political satirist sand social satirist
so what made you and Roger originally
want to write the book we talked about
it over the years to tell the story of
Air Force because over the years people
would ask is how did you guys start
where do you get your ideas from where
did you meet all that kind of stuff then
we kept thinking else one day we’ll get
around to doing all that but because the
show kept going we never cut around to
it and of course the longer the show
went on the more there was to tell
finding when the series ended we just
didn’t do anything for about a year and
then an agent approached us and said
well you guys ought to do the book
unfortunately at the time we didn’t know
that no it but Roger was actually quite
sick and he got progressively worse and
he died a few months later when we had
not got very far into the book at all
after you died I mean I just put the
book totally out of my mind until the
publisher called me in May and said well
we gonna do anything with this I really
wanted to do the book I felt I owed it
to Roger more than ever to get the story
out and sort of put a pin in Air Farce
this is what it has been this is what
for all practical purposes of was and
with his death it kind of it was a
natural kind of spark nobody care but
Air Farce more than Roger did nobody
worked harder at it and with his death
there’s definitely a really important
life went out of the group thank you
very much thank you want to lick my
Toblerone the last guy he was here at
the policeman Coleman
