Derby Girls Pt. 2: Roller Derby Bootcamp

there’s a minimum set of requirements
which every skater has to pass to be
able to play roller derby you have to be
able to basically skate and hit and fall
and do everything as safely as possible
it’s like hockey
it’s like rugby in the UK you know it’s
like American football they do have boot
camps and certain times of the year
where everyone basically is invited and
they come along they do training with
the more experienced league whenever
there’s a boot camp that comes up that’s
kind of close where there’s crazy just
like week or weekend of training I’m
they’re either not fun one who’s like
away to bed at 10 o’clock and waking up
at 7 o’clock to train our league is 18
and up so it doesn’t matter how old you
are as long as you’re 18 and over we
have I think a range from 18 to 42 in
our league so we’re all over the place
there’s been five elements to this boot
camp so first of all was learning how to
skate some girls turned up
never having skated her since those
seven and had their first set of barbie
skates then it was how to pull safely
you know it’s a contact game so there’s
gonna be a lot of falling and it’s very
important to know how to fall properly
not to injure yourself it’s a lot of
training to prevent these injuries and
to learn how to skate and you know
respond properly when you fall
you need to be able to control yourself
on your skates you need to be able to
skate in a safe stance as low as you
possibly can and it’s much for your own
safety as everyone else as well
there was jumping which sounds really
scary once you just learn to skate and
you just like to fall now you get a job
just been finishing off the hitting
giving and receiving of hits really
you’re going to go through first if Nick
random hip hit and then once you get
through a Reb you’re going to go and
make shoulder hit shoulder checks hip
checks full-body checks
Brucie barking which is my favorite I’m
a big bum as I said it helps the good I
guess in the way and then there’s a
written test as well basically on the
ball set which is set by WFTDA women’s
flat track Derby Association everyone
has to have a working knowledge to some
extent of course to be able to play
obviously you have to be willing to
learn and if you’re willing to learn
then hopefully we can teach you how to
do it
