Zeit ist Leben. Leben ist Zeit mit Begrenzung. | Lothar Seiwert | TEDxHeidelberg

Translation: Johannes Pirmann Lector: Nadine Hennig
Hello, I’m totally excited and deeply moved at the same time.
Enthusiastic because the first TEDx event in Heidelberg
and moves, because I’m right in this room
had a special encounter of the eerie kind
with a being that probably few people have encountered so far,
and a god and later also a goddess of time.
It took place right here in the Print Media Lounge.
It was the 5th of June 2014.
The ancient Greeks
had a god for everything,
and because time is the most precious thing in life,
they even had two gods for the time:
Kronos and Kairos.
Kronos was the god of sequential time, of punctuality.
So, if your trains are delayed, it’s not the train’s fault, but Kronos.
Kairos, that was his funky brother,
there are no pictures of that.
He was depicted in Greek mythology with a long braid
and he seemed to us humans very directly,
to show us a special opportunity
and there we had to grab and hold him,
That is why today we still say in our language:
“grab the opportunity”.
It was an event of the SAP Business Lounge.
I did not really feel like going to the lecture.
I wanted to go back to the chill-out party,
(laugh)
because a lecture in English, that’s complicated again,
but an inner voice, and that can only have been Kairos,
said, “go there,”
and on the stage was Dr. René Mur.
You heard her talking about success and failure this afternoon.
I do not even remember what she talked about
but I was interested in the speaker.
(laugh)
I do not remember how long it took;
sometimes we men have a longer lead.
I have decided to date her.
And what are you doing today in the digital age?
You go on Google or Facebook, or both,
and the profile picture on her Facebook page you can see here.
And what does that tell us?
In every system there is a cybernetic most effective point
and when I focus on that, I achieve what I do,
the biggest effect.
The most cybernetic point is here
of course the dog.
I had a dog phobia back then.
How did that happen?
I am a student during all semester breaks
jobbed as a postal deliverer in the countryside.
Maybe you can imagine that
in almost every house that had a front yard,
(Dog growling)
a dog has been waiting for me every day,
and that was pretty challenging.
There was only one chance for me to overcome this boundary
and to return to the topic of “dog” in a positive way.
Then I subscribed to a magazine: “Living with a dog”,
(laugh)
and I have read in here accordingly
and a few weeks or months later
we had this situation.
Who is here in the middle? Who is the center?
The dog of course.
Two years later we had this situation.
On June 11, 2016, we got married.
(English) “I love you, sweetheart.”
(Applause)
What we can learn from it,
that when dealing with time it does not matter
like your gmail inbox / account
optimally sorted the mails by priority,
but what you do with the time available.
For me, time is basically the most precious thing,
what we have in our lives,
and for me there are two boundaries in dealing with the time.
On the one hand, an outer boundary, which is simply given.
I brought that with me once;
this is my personal lifetime ruler now.
He goes here until about 82
and I have already brought the 2.0 version,
that goes to 100, and I’ll go there,
how old or young I am,
and everything that’s left of it,
is the past time, I can not change that,
but much more crucial is what’s to the right of it.
You see, with me it is now only steeply upwards.
For all of us today is a very special day, if you will,
namely the first day of the rest of your life,
you can start with a new time consciousness.
The other boundary we have is the inner one:
how we are adjusted to time.
I know one sentence, I’ve heard it so many times.
He only applies to people who are not here tonight.
It says, “I do not have time.”
And that is even a lie for me, a lie in life.
Why?
If someone says, “I do not have time,” that really means:
I do not have time for that, because other things are more important to me.
Benjamin Franklin,
currently dead,
(laugh)
once said this familiar sentence: “Time is money.” [Time is money.]
If you bought telecom stocks like me,
(laugh)
the money is not gone, it only has someone else now
and I’m still looking for that
Can I get that back?
Then I bought SAP shares
and then I was fine financially.
I once started
as head coach for Time System.
So for the younger ones among you:
That was analog technology,
without Bluetooth interface, without Thunderbolt plug-in slot,
zero power consumption, that’s how you wrote in it,
how you organized yourself
I had participants in my seminars,
who had believed with such a schedule tool
they would have more time.
Do you know what happened?
They were as stressed out as before,
only much more professional organized.
Packed in the 12-hour day, the workload of 15 hours
or in New Heidelberg: “still confused but on a higher level”,
[still confused, but one level up].
But her personal quality of life had not improved in any way.
That was like an iPad mini.
I recently gave my son a iPad.
He was very excited.
He said, “Dad, that’s cool,
but how did you get into the internet? “
At that time, it was still easy over time.
I have a flower vase here, there’s water in there,
and that stands for the work,
which we always have to do, or believe we have to do it.
I have two glasses here for the time, the morning and the afternoon.
We used to plan our day, then we worked it off
and then we could turn to the pleasant things of life.
Does not work that way anymore. Why?
You know that, you’ve hardly worked it all off,
already there is more work left.
Here comes a colleague or the boss:
“Do you have a minute?”,
takes a quarter of an hour, half an hour and then time passes again.
Now we come to a capacity limit,
namely the time quotas are exhausted.
What do we do?
Quite simply, we’ll take another glass.
For this we have a concept in German labor law,
we call this “extra work” or “overtime”,
because that goes on forever.
Ring the phone:
Customer threatens with order, wants to quickly have a document.
We used to say:
“I’ll put it in the mail,” as if by heart.
Today does the other want it?
Immediately by e-mail with a PDF, still cleverly designed.
And again, valuable time passes.
Once you have started with the emails,
you know that, you send out 3-4 mails,
what happens, 10-20 new ones come in,
also want to be processed.
Then I read these days, is there anything else
That’s what we call “private life”.
For example, the dog is ill,
the four-legged course.
Somebody has to sit at the vet in the waiting room.
Again, precious time passes.
Or there are problems in school,
because someone has to go to the class teacher in the consultation.
Again time passes.
Or the in-law Tiger has a birthday,
then usually the woman, you know that:
Get a gift, bake a cake, buy flowers and so on and so on,
and again time passes.
I could continue that for as long as I like.
A colleague of mine even made wine from the water,
that was about 2000 years ago.
(laugh)
We do not want to deepen that now.
We live in a time
where the challenges are immense.
For one thing, everything is clocked faster and faster
and in the US there is already a new term in medicine,
which is called: “hurry-sickness”, Hetz-illness.
Do you know that in the language?
“I’ll go to the copy shop quickly,” said one of the employees
or “I’ll go to the baker quickly.”
Why always fast and immediately?
On the other hand, everything has become more and more complicated and complex.
I started with a Fat-Mac
512 kB of RAM.
The operating system you can calculate,
how manageable that today … and today new updates are GB-sized.
With every update I have technical stress, because something is different again.
We combined these two challenges in a hybrid way.
We’re talking about Dynaxity.
This is a cross between Dynamics and Complexity,
that is, everything is clocked faster
and everything gets a lot more complicated.
How do we get out of this trap now?
I have in the course of my life
over 10 000 books accumulated:
about success, about self-management, about strategy, about marketing,
about business, about leadership, the whole program.
If you have 10 000 books
could be summed up in a single sentence,
it would be like this:
“Concentrate on the essentials for you
and not on the urgent. “
I can promise you one thing,
You will be starting this evening or tomorrow
do not have more time than before,
but if you consistently focus on the really important things,
Guarantee your productivity guaranteed by 50%.
I would like to prove this to you with a few numbers.
The pre-predecessor of Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, who knows
Twight D. Eisenhower has according to legend
always set priorities according to two criteria: important and urgent.
In our language, they are always happy to put in the same drawer.
Importance, for example, how much money is here?
Urgency alone is time pressure.
One participant had defined this very vividly the other day.
She had said:
“When you sit in the village and the paper comes to an end,
then this is very urgent for you, but important for nobody else. “
A former AT & T CEO attended meetings
to be written behind every agenda item,
how many dollars it was here.
Of course you can not convert everything into money,
but you see something crucial here, you can see in the white numbers
which executives and employees on average spend their time
and bottom right are 50 to 60%,
Things are done that are not important at all, but urgent.
I recalculated that earlier in the break and found
That’s half the story.
Only top left 15% proactively take care of things
that are important before they become urgent.
These are strategic things, creativity, writing a book,
Customer Relations Management, TQM, meaning things that are important
before they become urgent.
Bottom right takes half of our time away.
Most e-mails are part of
many e-mails, reports, statistics and more,
the faucet leaks.
But is it a water pipe break,
top right, then it is both important and urgent.
We tend to always respond to everything that happens right now.
Why is that?
Because our limbic system is conditioned to
to respond to any environmental irritant.
That was necessary
when the T-Rex crawled out of the bushes.
Since fractions of a second have decided
but if your smartphone says today:
“(Bing), you have a new Whatsapp message”,
is that interesting, but not important at all.
I attended an event some time ago
to learn with doctors and paramedics
because they make that very smart.
Imagine not too intense times such an accident, with tatü tata,
and there one screams because his blood is running down:
“Why is nobody coming?
I’m privately insured. “
(laugh)
They say, “He’s not important at all
but lying unconscious in the ditch, must first be revived.
The priority rule is:
“Whoever cries lives.”
(laugh)
When Monday your customer screams, your boss screams,
your spouse or partner is crying this evening,
This is a survival signal.
(laugh)
But is it important at the same time?
I had a situation that was important and urgent at the same time.
I rode a bike to a fitness training here in Heidelberg.
Accident, hospital, and the professor said:
“I have to operate on you first thing tomorrow.”
I said, “Can not go, I have a lecture in Berlin”,
then he says, “You can easily forget that
and some after that too. “
You can certainly imagine who was right:
Rehab, the whole program
and then you begin to rethink your life.
I brought you my life once,
this may still look a bit disordered and chaotic.
If you start like that,
to fill the gaps
and get his life under control
does that have its structure and its fixed order somewhere,
and that’s why it’s important to give it a frame too.
He is firm, he is immovable, and the Americans call that
“mission statement”, “big picture” or “big idea”.
We can also call it “life vision”, “life goal”.
I hand over the frame of our charming presenter.
In my life, these areas mean different things.
The most important thing for me
is the family,
the partnership,
the social,
friends
health, of course, my job
and maybe one or the other has a little secret,
a blind spot.
Everyone started at some point,
to organize his life
and also through crises
and challenges to develop.
What happens in life sometimes is
that we are having a problem or a crisis,
or a challenge.
It can happen that our whole life gets mixed up.
That was the case with my accident.
I could not work for three months, could not drive a car
and then it’s important to change the perspective
to somehow rebuild his life.
I had to reorganize everything with me.
And someday
had I succeeded
also this new challenge
to integrate into my life.
Not only are there problems or crises, but here too,
maybe twice as big as before.
Pleasures, unexpected events,
In my case, a woman and a dog.
(laugh)
If we succeed, maybe with some skill
to reorganize our lives,
also to find time for these things
then everything is in balance someday.
I succeeded two years ago.
The magic thing about it is
that the framework we have here,
although more parts have been added,
still fits.
(Applause)
I wish you still many joys and unexpected secrets
integrate into your life.
Thank you very much.
