so I was born and raised here in Vail
Colorado I was well aware of how
important it was to train my physical
body to be strong I wanted to keep up
with my dad and older brother on skis
raced my mountain bike and just enjoy an
active lifestyle but I had no idea that
I could train to create any emotion like
freedom passion peace gratitude joy love
or anything that I choose it’s not
always comfortable or easy to train a
new capacity for example this is me
riding and wrecking my mountain bike it
can be challenging to learn a new skill
in anything we do
that what’s important is that you stick
with it so what is emotional
intelligence it’s our ability to
identify and manage how we’re feeling
and it’s an imperative skill for success
in business and in life talent smart
tested emotional intelligence alongside
33 other important workplace skills and
found it to be the strongest predictor
of performance and success in all job
types in fact 90% of top performers were
also high in emotional intelligence and
had greater earnings than their peers so
if you’re thinking this doesn’t really
apply to me I invite you to dig deeper
because these findings held true for
people in all industries at all levels
in every region of the world what we
generate from within determines our
quality of life our ability to succeed
or fail in that which we most desire
really it’s our mind it’s our emotions
that are creating our experience so
after 15 years of working in our family
business I was given the opportunity to
become an owner but I was too afraid
I was very stressed out and overwhelmed
by life it seemed like way too much to
take on at the time I was thinking more
along the lines of selling all my belong
and heading to South America with my
yoga mat have you ever tried to move the
external pieces in your life so you
could feel something different inside
how many of us have thought that by
changing jobs where we live
relationships if you know buying a new
car would make us feel better inside and
maybe there is some temporary relief but
let’s face it that new car smell it goes
away along with a newness of a
relationship and now we’re back to
feeling the same thing we did before so
ten years ago I had a great career a
husband who loved me I was traveling the
world climbing Kilimanjaro mountain
biking in Europe scuba diving sailing my
life looked perfect at least according
to Facebook not a very accurate
representation of how I felt inside as I
stand here today and reflect back on how
defeated I felt inside the market
crashed my marriage failed and I hit an
all-time low the ache of sadness and
disappointment filled me I would
silently suffer through my days with a
smile on my face having no idea what to
do with this volcano of emotion that was
erupting inside me so night after night
I’d retreat to my bathtub with a bottle
of wine just trying to numb how I felt
inside that just made things worse much
worse something had to change you know
those points where you know something
has to change
faithfully before I escaped everything
to move to South America my mom
introduced me to an internal development
system and I was trained inside a daily
meditation practice with specific things
that would help me support and train
cultivate my emotions and direct my mind
in a new way in the beginning I was so
uncomfortable my body would ache and my
mind would race out of control but I
stuck with it and during my practice I
would move from feeling frantic to peace
I learned I could train my emotional
frequency so we’re all familiar with
tuning into a satellite frequency to
enjoy any genre of music that we prefer
whether it’s classical country rock or
jazz emotions are the same you can train
and then tune into the frequency of your
choice so I began to cultivate specific
emotions like freedom peace passion
confidence connection filming and then I
would bring that consciousness that
frequency that emotional experience to
what I was creating in life there’s a
considerable body of research backing
this work over 3,000 scientific studies
on the benefits of meditation improving
creative thinking problem-solving
increased focus stress reduction brain
function mood and many more the studies
are so impactful that companies like
Google Target and General Mills are all
investing in mindfulness practices for
their employees science shows that just
20 minutes of daily meditation can
change the function of our brain so as a
result of these practices I didn’t leave
my career and it’s dead on the screen
behind me you can see some of our team
and where I said yes to the opportunity
of becoming owner along with our
incredible culture we’ve doubled our
business
but most importantly my experience is
one of boundless opportunities of
confidence of freedom of joy and
fulfillment so today I’m going to share
with you a training tool a short
meditation I invite you to close your
eyes bring your attention your awareness
inward a gentle smile on your face and
take a deep breath through your nose
pause holding the breath and gently
exhaling through your nose pause holding
the breath inhale pause exhale pause and
be in thinking of your favorite activity
adventure loved one furry friend
whatever feels good to you and imagine
that you’re enjoying that experience
right now envision that it’s taking
place in this moment
and then identify how you’re feeling
give the emotion a name is it freedom
passion connection joy fulfillment
serenity give the emotion a name and
become sensitive to how it feels in your
nervous system taking a very deep breath
anchoring that emotion when you’re ready
to go ahead and open your eyes and
congratulations because you have just
meditated I’m so grateful to be here
with you today
saying yes to what’s possible in life
and I invite each of you to go limitless
by going within thank you
