Why we should choose monarchy | Noah Wiener | TEDxYouth@ISPrague

I am as you have heard by now just and

yes that means that I support a system

in which the head of state is a king or

queen let’s not be sexist here now

chances are when you heard this this

came as a surprise to many of you

especially within the country the United

States of America was quite literally

founded in opposition to modern not

helping this perception is the portrayal

of monarchs in the media when many of us

think monarch we might develop for

example the Emperor who start wars after

the mists blast group Skywalker an

appointment or perhaps the Evil Queen in

giving Snow White a poisoned Apple so

without these examples it’s not strange

to play ideology comes up as a surprised

many people now I want to make one thing

very clear none of this is meant to

oppose democracy and with support

absolute monarchies of the continents a

Arabia or the Gulf states tending of you

in spite of these examples monarchy is

not a threat to democracy the opposite

in fact according to the European

intelligence unit of 20 most democratic

countries in the world in 2015 head of

them were partners and those 10 work

Norway which is the most democratic

country in the world Sweden Denmark the

United Kingdom New Zealand Australia

Canada

Luxembourg the Netherlands and Spain and

incidentally that’s number 10 out of 20

is disproportionate with the total

percentage of patients at a modernist

but yes even with this considered it

would be valid to ask what if the

monarch is

to threaten democracy if the monarch is

going to rain but not rule what is the

point of a habit of painting the world

it is a perfectly valid question but

fortunately for me or else this would be

the most embarrassing ly short TEDx talk

in the history of the institution it is

one I am prepared to answer why shoes

monarchic monarchs are not only capable

of existence with democracy in many ways

they enhance democracy the first way in

which this can happen is that a monarch

is better suited to be a head of state

than any elected official the reason for

this is the head of state is supposed to

represent all of their people regardless

of race regardless of gender regardless

of sexual orientation regardless of

religion and crucially regardless of

political alignment to illustrate this

difference let’s contrast the cases of

the United States and the United Kingdom

American president Donald Trump was

elected and whether you support or

oppose him it’s an undeniable fact that

good deal of his people sixty-five

million of them to be exact or

decisively into the latter category I

can tell you this much the people on the

streets about a year ago chanting not my

president they certainly do you think

their new head of state was representing

them now who can tell me the last time

the people of the UK went out on the

as many of you probably guessed by now

it’s a trick question it’s never

happened because a monarch is neutral in

politics they are able to represent

their people regardless of politics and

even countries such as Germany where the

president is purely ceremonial they are

still elected and they are still quite

likely to be a politician so their

election is and will be a political

issue another way in which a monarch

simply makes a better head of state than

a politician is the Monarchs whole

disposition or by Queen Elizabeth the

Senate has raised these terms of whether

American presidents as the election of

Donald Trump

this gives governments a consistent

symbol and one that in most cases will

remain recognizable for a long time I’m

going to bet a fair amount of money that

the African American would have a much

harder time maybe those two presidents

than the average pretty happening

look at it like this if we had of Santa Claus were to change every election

Claus were to change every election cycle

cycle do you still think he would be such an

do you still think he would be such an enduring symbol of Christmas somehow I

enduring symbol of Christmas somehow I have to call that into question so yes

have to call that into question so yes all of this Stan’s been interviewed but

all of this Stan’s been interviewed but is there any actual data that

is there any actual data that demonstrates that monarchs are better at

demonstrates that monarchs are better at representing their people in politicians

representing their people in politicians as a matter of fact yes there it is

as a matter of fact yes there it is approval radius Queen Elizabeth the

approval radius Queen Elizabeth the second has as a 2012 in package approval

second has as a 2012 in package approval rating of 90 percent and there is

rating of 90 percent and there is nothing to suggest that this would’ve

nothing to suggest that this would’ve fallen since then this number has only

fallen since then this number has only been approached by two American

been approached by two American presidents at any given time

presidents at any given time those two were harry s truman at 88% in

those two were harry s truman at 88% in the immediate aftermath of the american

the immediate aftermath of the american victory of the second world war and

victory of the second world war and george w bush and 90% in the immediate

george w bush and 90% in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 terrorist

aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks in both of these cases though

attacks in both of these cases though these minors were much more reactions to

these minors were much more reactions to these presidents as symbols of the

these presidents as symbols of the country essentially reactions to these

country essentially reactions to these presidents acting in the same way

presidents acting in the same way constitutional monarchs regularly act

constitutional monarchs regularly act and make note of the president’s

and make note of the president’s themselves when they came to action

themselves when they came to action policy both these presidents well the

policy both these presidents well the reaction time was a bit more muted they

reaction time was a bit more muted they both will have average approval ratings

both will have average approval ratings in the mid to low 40s and likely to be

in the mid to low 40s and likely to be much lower than at the initial spot the

much lower than at the initial spot the superiority of approval ratings isn’t

superiority of approval ratings isn’t limited to the UK I according to the

limited to the UK I according to the Netherlands times 70% of the Dutch

Netherlands times 70% of the Dutch people support the king and this number

people support the king and this number is matched throughout most of Europe’s

is matched throughout most of Europe’s monitors the exception to this is Spain

monitors the exception to this is Spain at only 50

at only 50 five percent but two things are worth

five percent but two things are worth living first that this is still higher

living first that this is still higher than a good deal of presidents and

than a good deal of presidents and second that this number has been

second that this number has been steadily rising since the extension of

steadily rising since the extension of Rome of the new King Felipe what all of

Rome of the new King Felipe what all of this suggests is the constitutional mods

this suggests is the constitutional mods are veteran public relations and

are veteran public relations and therefore enter even state than

therefore enter even state than politicians but why is it so important

politicians but why is it so important to have a head of state that’s for the

to have a head of state that’s for the public relations that’s in part why is

public relations that’s in part why is it so important to have a monarch well

it so important to have a monarch well how can a partial head of state has

how can a partial head of state has throughout history demonstrative ly

throughout history demonstrative ly resulted in tireless building especially

resulted in tireless building especially in periods of general regional

in periods of general regional instability today for example the lesson

instability today for example the lesson we can learn from Latin American history

we can learn from Latin American history following the collapse of Spanish and

following the collapse of Spanish and Portuguese authority in the region the

Portuguese authority in the region the vast majority of posts the liberal

vast majority of posts the liberal estates fell apart into a cyclic Cruz

estates fell apart into a cyclic Cruz their democracies were failures the

their democracies were failures the exception that this was the Empire of

exception that this was the Empire of Brazil Brazilian government’s had

Brazil Brazilian government’s had consistency they might have changed but

consistency they might have changed but they were still loyal to the same person

they were still loyal to the same person Emperor hetero was second and through

Emperor hetero was second and through the second also it’s worth noting

the second also it’s worth noting spearheaded the abolition of slavery in

spearheaded the abolition of slavery in Brazil when the elite was against it

Brazil when the elite was against it then in 1889 a military backed by bonus

then in 1889 a military backed by bonus layers deep hosed the monomer and

layers deep hosed the monomer and resulted in a period of instability

resulted in a period of instability whose County whose the democratic

whose County whose the democratic governments and repression that did not

governments and repression that did not end until 1985 and if you follow the

end until 1985 and if you follow the news you’ll know that Brazil’s democracy

news you’ll know that Brazil’s democracy exactly a model of stability the

exactly a model of stability the contrast is asleep left America to dip

contrast is asleep left America to dip the only example you can use either in

the only example you can use either in the Middle East the republics of Iraq

the Middle East the republics of Iraq and Syria are currently being overrun by

and Syria are currently being overrun by violence and civil war after having a

violence and civil war after having a therapy post-colonial governments of

therapy post-colonial governments of noticing a pattern here all ultra

noticing a pattern here all ultra nationalist dictators such as Saddam

nationalist dictators such as Saddam Hussein and the usamos meanwhile the

Hussein and the usamos meanwhile the neighboring Kingdom of Jordan has

neighboring Kingdom of Jordan has instead of democratizing since 1948 and

instead of democratizing since 1948 and is one of the best if not the best place

is one of the best if not the best place to live in the Arab world relatively

to live in the Arab world relatively tolerant and virtually free of violence

tolerant and virtually free of violence a monarchy for the purposes of stability

a monarchy for the purposes of stability might not suit all that necessary for

might not suit all that necessary for the Western world I mean after all the

the Western world I mean after all the West is stable the West is free of

West is stable the West is free of threats to democracy and that’s connect

threats to democracy and that’s connect never but doesn’t any sense to assume

never but doesn’t any sense to assume that this really the case forever

that this really the case forever remember it was less than a century ago

remember it was less than a century ago when the armies of the Third Reich seems

when the armies of the Third Reich seems poised to unite all of Europe under

poised to unite all of Europe under fascism incidentally the rise of the

fascism incidentally the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany come to

Nazis to power in Germany come to Winston Churchill to bemoan the

Winston Churchill to bemoan the abolition of the German monarchy as one

abolition of the German monarchy as one of the biggest mistakes the Allies made

of the biggest mistakes the Allies made in dealing with a defeated Germany a

in dealing with a defeated Germany a figurehead Monica Germain Churchill

figurehead Monica Germain Churchill argues

argues could an increased loyalty to democracy

could an increased loyalty to democracy the lack of which laid the German

the lack of which laid the German Republic for the most part the era of

Republic for the most part the era of kings and queens ruling rapidly leaders

kings and queens ruling rapidly leaders Iranian has come to an end for this

Iranian has come to an end for this reason it does seem to make sense to

reason it does seem to make sense to question the

question the of monarchy the relevance of monarchy in

of monarchy the relevance of monarchy in the modern world

the modern world I hold however that in today a moderate

I hold however that in today a moderate is not just an official a mother is in

is not just an official a mother is in barrier constitutional monarchs make

barrier constitutional monarchs make better heads of state and politicians

better heads of state and politicians constitutional models represent their

constitutional models represent their nation regardless of what political

nation regardless of what political party happens to be in power

party happens to be in power constitutional monarchs independent and

constitutional monarchs independent and are rocks of stability in uncertain

are rocks of stability in uncertain times so remember if you evil your

times so remember if you evil your government doesn’t represent you if you

government doesn’t represent you if you feel concerned about trying times of

feel concerned about trying times of your nation remember that there is an

your nation remember that there is an alternative you can choose monarch
