What if I didn’t have anxiety? | Sam Fagan | TEDxYouth@Columbus

hello my name is Sam and I’m in the

fifth grade for the last two years since

I was in third grade every morning was

pretty much the same a stomachache a

headache and my throat hurt unless it

was Saturday I didn’t know why my mom

and dad don’t know why and my doctor

said everything was healthy with my body

have you ever felt this way – you’re

about to go do something you’re excited

and nervous at the same time some of you

might know what I mean you might have a

headache before a test or when you’re

trying out for the basketball team or

band another time you might have a

header stomachache is when you’re

overloaded with homework and installed

you tomorrow stressful situations can

show up as anxiety anxiety in the body

it feels like a ride that I don’t want

to be on and can’t get off anxiety can

be in very different physical forms for

different people for me it’s a header

stomachache I throw it hurts and

sometimes or back hurts for you and

might just be one of these symptoms

everyone feels this way some some of the

time but I feel this way almost every

day this is why I believe that I have

childhood anxiety anxiety is the body’s

warning system they are scared or

worried or stressed about something

adults have plenty to worry and stress

about their jobs paying their bills

being married taking care of their house

having kids and more you might be

thinking what does a 10 year old kid

like me have to worry about learning

homework projects testing friends

fitting in getting bullied and more are

adult problems more important than kid

problems I have found a few things that

have actually helped me first

that was for me to remember that I’m not

the only one who feels this way it’s

pretty normal second I found a few

things I can do that calm me down like

doing fidgeting things with my hands

like squeezing a stress ball or play-doh

my school counselor miss McClellan lets

me come into a room every day and play

with kinetics and if my brain get ready

to go to the classroom a couple of other

things that I can do are drawing

pictures or

thinking about and picturing my mind

everything that can happen that’s good

third elephant I remember that I’m not

alone in figuring this out my parents

teacher and counselor all want the best

for me and are willing to help me find

out more solutions lastly I like to go

outside and look at nature and

everything around me and be thankful for

life and being able to experience it the

biggest thing that I have learned is

that stress is a big liar it tells me

that I cannot do what I’m facing it

tells me that I’ll never feel better now

that I’m starting to notice that those

are lies I know that I can do what I’m

facing and that I’ll feel better

eventually you’ve probably been

wondering when I ain’t giving this talk

be making me really anxious but it

doesn’t make me very anxious so I know

I’m not alone at first I didn’t know

what the problem was but now that I know

I can control my anxiety better than I

used to thank you for letting me share

my story [Applause]
