Teaching the “Unteachable” | Ciera Kelley | TEDxUMKC

get out if you don’t want to sit here
learn they just leave already know this
stuff this is for you not me
I’m tired of coming here every single
day telling you all to sit down stop
talking
pay attention stop tapping your pencil
wake up
keep your hands to yourself I do not get
paid enough to do this I swear this is
not what I imagined teaching to be day
one
do you remember day one of your dream
job shoot not even day one but the
anticipation of day one you’ve spent
countless hours learning about
procedures best practices expectations
and now it’s time for you to do what you
trained so hard for in education the
anticipation is alike we spent hours
imagining all our little learners
bopping along to the classroom chant
smiling just wide enough to see where
their childhood teeth have abandoned
them just knowing that our classroom
theme will come to life as the fall
sunshine comes breaking through the
blinds whoo my students are gonna love
our classroom so much that they’ll never
feel like the work is too hard talk over
me
poke their friend with an eraser stab
their neighbor with the super pointy end
of the pencil or pull the fire alarm
right after lunch man was I mistaken I
mean don’t get me wrong my first day was
just as amazing as the next story I
teachers but what no one tells you about
is how the students don’t stay as we’ll
put together as they are in the
honeymoon phase see if you ask any
teacher the reality of teaching is far
from the dream yes we could say that we
spend our lives doing one of the most
fulfilling jobs like listening to kids
use their voice to speak their truth
answering small questions like why the
wind blows or why the sea is salty that
even though random are actually really
good questions
since students turn what was in I can’t
do this a week ago and Tula look mrs.
Kelly I did it it’s seeing the seeds of
the future in the eyes of children in
every moment and teaching like tomorrow
won’t be if they don’t learn their long
vows down even though these things keep
us in the field teaching neither starts
nor ends with preparing students for the
future boy it’s the long hours I mean
you spend never-ending hours trying to
complete a never-ending list of to deuce
just to find out who will never have
enough time to do anything anything that
needs to be done it’s the difficult
parents it’s the tears the feeling
overwhelmed with lesson plans state
tests and reteaching confusing story
problems to students that still don’t
get it but it’s the most urgent of
teaching challenges teaching the
children that are just hard to reach you
know the ones that I always have an
attitude fall asleep during a great
lesson never turn in work or always
disrupts the class wait or how about the
ones that never pay attention all right
class open your books to page four
once you get there all eyes on me so I
know that we’re ready to go on right
knee right knee what did I just say I
don’t know get out imagine that
hard-to-reach student that student is
often written off labeled as the trouble
kid or forgotten about all together but
what educators often fail to see is the
student that likes parent involvement
the student that tosses interns at night
because they’re sharing a bed with the
sibling or even a parent or that student
that worries about where their next meal
is going to come from get out if you
don’t want to sit here learn and just
leave I already know this stuff this is
for you not
sometimes we as educators find ourselves
secluding that child from their peers
ignoring them or just putting them out
of the classroom see it’s easy for us to
spend all our time and energy on the
students that are willing to learn and
put forth an effort but we need to
remember that it’s the hard to reach
students who need us the most
we’re figuring out how to reach them you
have to forget about thinking outside
the box and be ready to think without a
box altogether this means doing the
unconventional challenging yourself
mentally and emotionally surrounding
yourself with creative people and
figuring out what could be what they’re
figuring out what could be improved
challenged or done differently in
education we know what this looks like
for our students but sometimes we have a
hard time understanding what it looks
like for ourselves when it comes to
working with hard to reach kids see
throughout our career we teach our
students to be innovative so think
without to think outside the box right
then the hard-to-reach student shows up
and we lose our own innovation we just
want them to fall in line or go with the
flow but something that I’ve started to
question within myself and other
teachers is why do we encourage our
students to think without a box yet
we’re constantly sitting inside of our
own especially as it pertains to the
difficult student erasing the hearts of
fit erasing the easy-fit box that we put
the right knees in means creating
environments where students can be
confident in their ability to learn
removing the box means that their work
can bring limitless rewards and that
continual success will follow their
resilience when it comes to the
hard-to-reach student we have to
remember to listen more and talk less I
mean really listen listen so well you
catch every
I every hint of vocal hesitancy and of
course every spark in spike in
confidence by listening more you gain
personal insight on their child’s life
all the while those kids are feeling
understood intended to just run that on
back ok bring it on back
thank you thank you by listening more we
gain personal insight on that child’s
life all the while while they’re talking
they feel understood and tended to you
see instead of limiting children’s
creativity and placing them in the same
category as everyone else we as
educators have the earliest opportunity
to nurture and bring forth students
potential we have to remember not to
limit the students with our frustrations
and impatience
you know slamming them in a box in hopes
for good behavior and halfway paying
attention Alan Turing Alan Turing a
famous mathematician once they did
something that changed my whole outlook
on education he said sometimes it’s the
people who no one imagines anything of
who do the things that no one can
imagine so you see let us not put
students in the box but instead let us
break down our own four walls it reaches
hard as we possibly can because once
educators start to think without a box
the students that we reach the hardest
for becomes the future leaders of their
community and of this nation thank you
