Carlos Serrudo three Bolivians that the 24
November 2007 they went out to
protest what they believed
correct in the capital of Bolivia sucre
I was 13 years old and I still remember the fear
that I felt when I realized that they had
mass protests throughout my city
natal and that not only were these three
deceased persons the balance of
protests but more than 400 injured
some of which inclusive
they lost limbs of his body
in the wake of this experience and many
others in my country I decided to dedicate my life
to the study of human rights the
rights that are intrinsic to each
person on this planet by the simple
fact of being a human however
I wanted to go beyond what everyone
imagine or understand when we talk about
study human rights which is the
legal aspect and the political aspect
of this my interest was to understand that
We could do the citizens
of the skin to enforce our
human rights when we live in
environments that do not guarantee them
thanks to this was that I discovered what
today is my reason for being that is the
non-violence beyond a motto of life
as a socio-political technique for
make an impact on public policy
and in my society in our society
to change our environment towards a
towards a positive future
as I was studying the
non-violence as a technique not only
as a philosophy I realized that this
technique exists since the 500 before
Christ and there are more than 1000 cases
Documented groups are movements
social groups that have used techniques and
non-violence strategies to change
its social and yet most do not
we learn not even in school
as he continued studying
I also found out that in the last
century taking into account all
revolutions that have been there are the 23
percent of those that were violent
they were successful while 50 percent
hundred or more double this amount
who used non-violence techniques
they managed to succeed and reach their goal
final to install a positive change
in your social
the nice thing is that in the year and at the point
of the story in which we are today already
there are people who have dedicated their lives to
study this technique to understand that
loose protests or loose tactics by
change our reality they are not going to
work if there is not a strategy by
behind but without having to go
to violence without the need to attack
to another person or to another entity we
yes we can change our society
as I was learning more I felt
the need to share it but when
I started on this pilgrimage to talk
of non-violence I came across
many doors closed and with many
reasons why supposedly not
can be effective a strategy of the
violence in our society as a
Bolivian and Latin American society
then to this day I want to go more
beyond the basic concepts of
violence and tell them the three points
specific ones that always repeat me for
which supposedly nonviolence
it can not be effective for us and
I also want to explain to you that they are
wrong
the first one concentrates on the adversary
I have heard many times that
nonviolence techniques like this
They worked like Gandhi but he fought
against the English this would not have
operated for example with a government or
with an opponent as repressive as the
Nazi Germany
however this conception starts from a
wrong idea that is the
non-violence with nonviolence as
a technique with the strategy we are not
looking only to change the opinion
only from our opponent that’s a
mistake to think that it’s that simple or
basic some we like to do it in the
process but seriousness what we are
looking is to generate enough tension
social so that those injustices that
the status quo ignores they can go out to the
surface are pleasant said that you have to
create tension in the mind of a
individual so he can raise his
thoughts of thoughts
superficial to a critical analysis and it’s
that what makes nonviolence seeks
rise from injustice from the
discrimination from many mistakes that
can commit our society but
to be able to talk about equality inclusion
justice of all these issues that at
status quo do not suit them that arise
an example that I love to give for this
case just always will find
the example that they give me why not
can work a subject that very few
sometimes we are taught in the classes of
story is that during Nazi Germany
in the Second World War the only
protest that was successful was a
protest made by women on the street
of the rose ‘rosenstrasse in berlin in
1943 more than 400 women maintained a
non-violent sub-zero protest in a
environment quite dangerous for them
because as you can see there were quite
security forces around and with their
persistence and will insist nonviolent
they managed to free more than a thousand Jews
they were going to be deported to camps
concentration
a second reason that I always hear
with which supposedly the
non-violence as a technique can not
work in Latin America is because
we have a society too violent
and used to violence and this is
understands why it’s sometimes even used
violence as a way to educate
at home to children however here
we have to realize that when
we talk about defending human rights
many times many groups that
they organize around a cause they go to
have a counterpart that maybe is
fighting for exactly the same
rights but they are using methods
violent will never be a unique fight
to that group but it is at that moment in the
that we as citizens have to
make the decision of what I am going to do
to defend this cause to defend
human rights is the approach that
studying we usually have what
many believe two options do nothing
because that’s the way life is like this is the world
things are not going to change so that
risk myself
act violently participate in
a violent insurrection assaulting me
opponent or use guerrilla techniques the
non-violence raises a point in the
medium that is not radical and that seeks
generate actions that are successful that
are legitimate and at the same time
can give a result without wearing down
people in the process of participating in
these protests there are many benefits of
act in this way but for this case
specifically I would like to emphasize 21 that
acting nonviolently will give you
much legitimacy to the message that one
is driving because it shows that it is
willing to live his proposal from his
protest and number 2 that by using no
violence and having protests that are
cheerful that are festive sometimes is done
the mockery of the girls who get
flowers in the hair or that they deliver
flowers to your opponent do not believe you
that it is much easier to identify a
infiltrate of the opposite side that
wants to start violence within
our ranks there are many benefits
to avoid
and a third argument which I am
sure that many understand is
just machismo and here I can
say on a personal level that as a
young and single woman that I am
trying to convey this message to me
found with many doors closed
specifically for this but at the same
I want to tell you that the way
to dismantle machismo just
found within the bases of the
non-violence because when there is a
society that are strongly macho
or maybe not so much is learned from this to
through social interactions in
violent environments in which I have
to be for the aggressor
the strong or the victim which is
embarrassing when we talk about
non-violence we talk about changing from
our beliefs that is power that
is force an intelligent force to how
let’s prove it and use it to
change society
a very good news that I have respect
to this is not only that there have been
success stories of nonviolence in
macho societies and today I know that
They expect me to say that if there has not been
cases of successes of non-violence in
our society and this happened in 1977
when a group of four women
they started a hunger strike in peace
that not only ended up twisting the arm
of the dictator to give forgiveness to the
political prisoners and the exiles who
there were hundreds who could return
but also generated that in a couple of
years have to call elections
democratic
if they could do it and they were just
four because we who are many
now fighting for different causes not
we can do it and here I want to talk about
something very important that said the doctor
Martin Luther King
Martin said that one of the biggest
obstacles to the advancement of society
it’s not necessarily the opponent that
wants to maintain the status quo but the
people of good will who understand
our cause but who do not want
participate in nonviolent movements
because I agree with you
order but I do not like the mess that
generates a nonviolent protest what
message they are giving us at that moment
who prefer that order to justice
justice and order exist in a
society so that our rights are
respect when our rights are not
respected are the biggest obstacle to
that these rights are respected then
what you have to understand is that a
superficial understanding of people from
Goodwill is even more harmful than
total of that understanding of our
opponent
and today I want to invite you to
the next they see a protest and see
that is nonviolent get a cause
for which they want to work, they join
add because at the end of the day if not
we are many and if there is no union we do not know
many people can achieve this change
they think this cause is too early
so that it works in our society
The time has not yet come because
they think that with time these advances
are going to be given but it’s still not the
time but time is neutral the
time is not something that ensures success
of a movement because that way time is
now and the time can be constructive
or destructive to the extent that I do not
I participate to make my society
better then I invite you to
let’s look for the proposal in the protest
so that we are brave that we know
howard for those who can not
do it and above all that we understand
that a few activists or some
how many people fighting for a cause
they can not change the world
help from each one of us because at
end of the day as we have been taught to
many from the cradle the union is the
force
