Rêver pour prolonger la vie | Jessica Robino | TEDxAix

It should make life a dream and your dream a reality.
So me, my dream girl was to fly airplanes.
So today, this dream has become my daily
since, for 11 years I pilot A320.
And I did not have all dreamed of being there by cons.
(Laughter)
But hey, sometimes there are causes beyond our control.
Make dreams come true, it’s really wonderful,
Unfortunately, everyone can not do it
by the cruel snares of life, such as illness.
When it comes to the illness of a child,
it’s even more cruel and particularly unfair.
It was eight years ago, I met a woman who changed my life.
She created an association
to realize the dreams of sick and disabled children.
She had created in memory of his son
and she wanted to help families in similar fate to his.
I was, of course, affected by the cause, moved, and I felt very selfish.
So I wanted to help them,
because I asked myself is: “You?
What are you doing for others? “
So I started selling tucking
the benefit of the association.
I was selling my colleagues –
locked up with me on the plane, they had no other choice
(Laughter)
that listen to me and suddenly possible to buy a teddy.
It worked so well
that I was nicknamed “the pilot teddy”.
Plush stuffed after,
I’m more invested me, I started to go to the hospital
and I realized the first childhood dream.
There are 2 and a half years, she encouraged us to create an association
to continue his fight.
So, with my family, we founded the association “Fairy Dreams”.
Our goal: to support children seriously ill or severely disabled,
regardless of their pathology.
There are many people who are affected by what we do every day,
but sometimes one wonders:
“What it really is? “
What is the impact on disease of the realization of a dream?
In theory, one could imagine
that this is just a little bit of well-being,
a fleeting moment,
an escape from the disease.
The reality is much more amazing.
Realizing the dream of a sick child, it’s more than just a gift.
It is a gesture that has a significant impact on the life of a child,
his family and the health care system.
There is a Canadian association like ours
who conducted a study in this regard.
Four major impacts emerged,
and the results are very impressive!
The first impact is the emotional impact.
Note that it is important to live
moments of happiness in these difficult times.
It upsets me to talk to you eg mother Kevin,
who called us recently to make you realize the dream of his son.
What she told us is that he needs a moment of happiness
because today it’s 14 years he’s fighting against treatments
and it can do more.
It supports the most.
Realizing the dream of a sick child,
is to make him happy for the first time since often long.
What emerged, what we see on the graph,
is that it increases the level of happiness and hope perceived by the child.
A sick child is an earthquake that affects everyone.
Parents, children …
And there are additional issues that come to add.
As if the disease was not enough …
Financial problems,
when one parent has put his career aside
to accompany their child to the hospital.
The also enable them to realize the dream family,
it allows them to strengthen family bonds,
to better cope with the disease,
and quite simply to have a conversation during care.
For supporting the child every day?
This is his family.
So well-being has a real impact on the morale of the child.
The second impact is the impact of distraction.
Not only it allows them to think less about the treatment and the disease,
but many studies have shown
that the distraction inhibits pain signals received by the body.
That’s why we have chosen to offer daily
several events in different hospital departments.
And regularly care of the staff told us about the benefits
they observe on children and on the course of their treatment.
To give you an example, there are 3 years, we have established a musical animation
the 6th floor of the Hospital of Timone in Marseille.
In this service, there is a little boy who must be continuously
respiratory support.
Except he does not support.
And since the coming musician,
he told the teacher the service he came to better accept it.
And that’s great.
That’s the physical impact.
Not only the fact to realize their dream of having or animations
allows them to think less treatment,
live better disease
and better support the everyday to the hospital,
but in addition, it gives energy to the children.
And immune system needs a sacred dose
to fight every day against the disease.
It was also observed through dreams that we have made.
In particular, there is a year and a half
a nurse from the Montpellier hospital called us,
she wanted us to realize the dream of Taha.
Taha dreamed to meet the cast of “Helen and the boys.”
(Laughter)
Eh yes !
So he had to act quickly, because the days of Taha were numbered.
When players have moved, her mom called us.
So here Taha with actors.
She called us in tears of joy,
and she told us: “It’s amazing, thank you!
Thank you because Taha was lying since 3 weeks and he could not get up.
Today, he got up, he walked, and he danced. “
After this moment of happiness, he clung to life
for more than a year while it was unexpected.
The fourth impact is a lasting impact.
They not only live an intense moment of happiness at the time,
but in addition, the effects are beneficial in the long term
because there are happy memories that [arise]
while the period is particularly difficult.
So the last impact,
the lasting effect …
There are 8 years old when I started making children’s dreams,
while the first dream I realized, was that of John the Baptist.
Jean-Baptiste was my age,
he was hospitalized in the hospital of San Salvadour in Hyères.
He was suffering from “locked-in syndrome.”
I do not know if people know what it is.
He was completely immured in his own body,
and he could do more than blink.
So he communicated like that.
It is extremely difficult to live.
He was passionate about literature and he wrote a book of poems
blinking.
He had been awarded, edited and out of his collection,
the hospital nurses wanted to please him
and therefore held a signature collections like the great authors.
They organized it at the library Hyères
and they asked us to contact Grand Corps Malade
because he was a fan.
Grand Corps Malade came, it was a special moment ….
This moment was filmed, mediated and Jean-Baptiste watched this video
everyday.
There is a final impact, which is not included in the study.
It is the impact this has on voluntary associations.
So, I’ll speak for myself, for once, I know whereof I speak.
When I began to realize the dreams of sick children,
when I started to get involved in this association,
I did it because I wanted to make a little bit of happiness
that life offers me every day
and because I thought it was useful.
But I had not at all imagined the effect it would have on my life.
I had absolutely no imagined how it would make me happy
to help others.
I did not imagine all the emotions I was feeling,
all the friendships that were to tighten,
because this association is …
a group of friends.
And I had not imagined how it would change my life.
So I take this opportunity to thank all the people who help us
and that allow us to make this possible.
For there are times when we put pressure,
as now, for example.
(Laughter)
And there are times when we put it,
because you have to raise the funds needed to finance all that.
We must come to contact artists
because we never want to disappoint people who place hope in us.
So to conclude, I would just like to invite you to share
two dreams with me.
The first would be to imagine that anyone could ever
invest in a charitable or humanitarian activity,
one hour per month, per year,
a Euro.
But imagine the number of lives that could be impacted and improved.
And the second dream would be to imagine that solidarity,
the love of neighbor become a fundamental value
we transmit to our children.
Do not we make this world a little bit better?
And if we invited our children to participate with us
the achievement of dreams?
Do we not teach them
that to give is better than to take,
than cure, it is better than hurting,
and helping, it’s better than fighting.
Thank you for listening.
(Applause)
