One Nation Indivisible | John Bridgeland | TEDxPennsylvaniaAvenue

Translator: Sarah Shahid Checker: Ayman Mahmoud
Close your eyes.
Imagine yourself at the age of twenty-two and may have finished college.
You are notified by email or phone that it is time to serve your country.
The service is voluntary but expected, and all your friends are doing it.
You have options: You can register in City Year,
Teach for America, Habitat for Humanity or Peace Corps.
Or you can be enlisted in: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Marine Corps.
I think I know them all.
Some of you are excited to venture:
Where are you going, what are you going to do?
You will talk to people in the army,
You will ask them why they joined the army?
They will often talk about adventure.
Some of you know that a year of home service can put it on a better course.
Some of you know that America needs to serve the nation to address a divided nation.
As you know, America is torn.
The data appears overwhelmingly:
We lack trust in each other and in key institutions.
Young people lack opportunities because of race, gender, income level, and background
To meet together in joint experiments.
Even the army,
Which brought together large numbers of the population of earlier generations
In a joint mission,
Now turns up to 75 percent of potential recruits
Due to poor education, misconduct, and poor health.
We see the effects around us.
Just pick up the leaves:
Mistrust, violence and the threat of American societies
In places like Ferguson, Baltimore, Dallas and Chicago.
Studies show that there is increasing anxiety and dissatisfaction among young people.
Americans have lost confidence
In their ability to face major challenges together.
This is not the country where I grew up.
I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Drake Road,
Literally on the street extending from Neil Armstrong,
That quiet, humble man who landed on the moon.
You can hardly find a picture of him doing this,
He was very focused on the task.
But it was a constant reminder to all of us of what the Americans can do together
When they meet Maa around a bold goal.
Armstrong mode mode progress.
This man inspired me as men and women of his generation inspired me
I joined the public service, but I left the track.
I found myself in a law firm in New York and Paris.
I was bold enough to write a letter
“I do not know a government official, but I admire him very much.
His name was Ted Sorensen.
I said, “Mr. Sorenson, I find myself reading books
For the Constitution and Debates of Lincoln Douglas,
Rather than how companies are incorporated or compliance with safeguards regulations.
This beautiful letter was written to me later,
“I hope you are interested in public service
To light up and be realized in a timely manner. “
With his help, I found my way out and in unexpected places.
From the corporate world to work for smaller members
In the House of Representatives to the Congress and at half the wage.
I know, it was not very bad.
From the West Wing office, which is the president’s domestic policy,
To a bunker under the White House on 11 September,
Help the local response to the tragedy.
From founding a company I thought it would work
Only with weak young people in American cities
To find myself in the villages of Africa.
I was literally 41 years old before I discovered what I was born to do.
I wished I had this transformational experience at home when I was 22.
We have no goal to launch a spacecraft for the moon today,
But I think America needs a great idea to use its power.
I think that idea is a universal, voluntary, global service.
Imagine, just for a moment, young people at an early age
Working with people different from them
To get their living in difficult circumstances that require solving the big challenges.
They can teach students in low-performing schools.
They can preserve rivers and national parks.
Or they can make bed nets against malaria in Africa.
National service can change the generation.
Think of the story of my dear friend, Lashantai Moore.
She was homeless, on the streets of Washington, from Anacostia,
A teenager, an unmarried mother leaked from high school.
Her life prospects were bleak.
But found, through speech,
Wire save the earth, experience wonderful national service
Which was developed to work on cleaning the Anacostia River.
Then in a small team of young people who brought the national symbol,
American Eagle, to return to the country Capitol.
When I came here for this update this morning while driving with my daughter
I saw the American Eagle and I thought of Blanchantai.
I remembered Lashantai telling me:
“In the past society was looking at me as some of the problems that must be resolved.
After my experience in the wire to save the earth,
I realized it was possible to succeed. “
Good home service can provide it for the generation.
Millions of young Americans like Lashantai want to work.
So I could have been skeptical.
We have a Republican president, a majority of Republicans in Congress,
Many of you wonder:
“Well, Bridge, how can we make that big idea come into play now?”
As a Republican I spent 20 years of his career promoting national service,
I know that history stands in our favor.
Given our division and how we split ourselves,
The idea is becoming more urgent than ever.
Our President, General Stanley McChrystal,
Who came up with many other great patriots
To lead this important responsibility.
Kill my predecessors in the battle of Gettysburg
In a wild campaign, which embodied for me
The words of Republican President Abraham Lincoln:
“For us we live to devote ourselves to unfinished business
For those who have fought it with honor in advance so far. “
Teddy Roosevelt was president for two years
His face appears on Mount Rushmore
For his amazing work in the service of protection, where he said:
“Ultimately, success or failure depends on how we behave
In ordinary affairs of life and how ordinary citizens respond
To those slogans that call for heroic action. “
When we serve today, we bind ourselves
Those who have maintained our unity and the development of our freedom.
Teddy Roosevelt’s cousin, Franklin Roosevelt,
He had a great experience during the Great Depression
Within the national civil service in our history,
It is the Civilian Protection Corps.
You may not know that Richard Nixon actually did
By establishing the Chiefs Corps, the largest national service program,
Which includes about half a million Americans every year during their careers.
Ronald Reagan, may have been a surprise for you,
As governor of California, he established the California Protection Corps,
Under an oddly inspiring slogan: low wages, hard work, and miserable conditions.
(Laughter)
All of these young people have participated throughout the country.
We know the call to service calls.
President George W. Bush threw the coin at Super Bowl
He wrote a small note in this wonderful tradition
To President Clinton, saying: “There is only one initiative
Under my entire administration, I want you to continue. “
Guess what they are? Points of light.
After September 11, President George W. Bush expanded AmeriCorps,
The Clinton era, 50%, was a tough battle with Congress.
Peace Corps, Kennedy program, to the highest levels in decades,
In the spirit of Sargent Schreifer,
He established a Disaster Preparedness Corps
In more than 1,000 communities across the United States.
Conservative Republican Senator Oren Hatch,
The first person to call me after September
When I was at the White House of Capitol Hill,
Let’s talk about serving the homeland.
And shared his mission in the Mormon
Which he carried out at an early age
In the Great Lakes, and how it affected the rest of his life
And an additional 30 years of service in the US Senate.
It was he who led the debate to pass what he called
“Edward M. Kennedy’s Serving America Act”
With a wonderful spirit of wisdom and friendship between the two parties.
Republicans and Democrats called together for service
During different eras, where it aroused a good sense.
Kennedy announced his “do not ask” speech in the opener.
Johnson’s letter “to guide young people, comfort patients, encourage the weak.”
Ronald Reagan went to the Republican National Congress and said:
“The spirit of service flows is like a deep and strong river
During the history of our nation. “
President Bush was 41 who said:
“Fantastic diversity spreads like stars like a thousand points of light.”
President Clinton said:
“We will be committed to the American society in our time
We will make the university cost acceptable to every American. “
George Bush said after September 11:
“We need non-spectators, based on the strength of many
Of acts of generosity, goodness and morality. “
On 11 September I found myself at the President’s Emergency Operations Center
Under the White House, where terror and fear reign over the nation,
Minister Norm Menetta was watching the landing of each aircraft in the United States.
But finally within hours,
White House workers said thousands of people were calling
To provide assistance throughout the world and the United States.
We received emails with offers from friends and strangers to help.
In fact, in New York City, there was such a reaction
Of mercy and love from all over the world
Where they carried out trucking
To transfer the surplus of American compassion away
Because they were inconsistent with the response.
In the end, our response was service and care
And love the other at various difficult times.
If we look back now for the future, we see that the facts are important.
Whenever we try to collect “money” for the government
And will activate the national service
The better we are, the better.
National studies show that the service of the homeland
Reduce repetitive absenteeism and raise math and reading rates
For students caught up in low-performing schools.
The National Service is an effective response to disaster preparedness.
There is a so-called FEMA corps
Which mobilizes the talented and talented
To respond to disasters and save $ 60 million from taxpayers annually.
The program was initiated by current Missouri Governor Eric Gretens,
Which operates in the Navy and is called the “continuing mission”
He had an idea when veterans came home, let’s not look at them like this:
“Oh, you’ve served you, that’s all.”
Let us look at them as the assets and resources of our country,
The mission continued
In turn, the national service has promoted education and employment
And even the output of society and the family of veterans in our nation.
According to Columbia University when investing $ 1,
We get a $ 4 return on investment: services provided,
Education and labor outputs, and low social welfare costs.
Longitudinal Studies – Is there anybody here serving in Americores or the Peace Corps?
Oh God, I loved it. Quarter of the hall.
Members of Americorps vote, volunteer and work in the public service
In large numbers compared to those who do not.
Characterized by a significant civilian impact
When Putnam speaks of “action alone”, we can move together.
Americores, a federal program that invests in national service,
Rewards are now awarded to applicants
Who invest and love training,
To increase the investment ratio from about 19% in 2015 to 26% last year.
The National and Community Service Foundation,
Which runs Americores, was marked
With the book “Explore the benefits” that was created by the results for America,
Which provides an incentive across our entire government
To make government dollars
Stricter in the implementation of what works.
We also know that evidence is a powerful tool
To move the policy agenda and continue this important work.
Republicans may philosophically want to separate the big government, but they support it
Small civil society groups represented by the national service.
When Alexis de Tocqueville came to the United States in the 1830s
To study the prisons of America, impressed with the institutions of American civil society,
Which inspired him to his wonderful book entitled “Democracy in America”.
Democrats want to ensure that government investments are effective,
They therefore want the national service to affect the solution of public problems.
Both sides have priorities: to rebuild infrastructure,
Reintegrating veterans, helping vulnerable youth in inner cities,
Where national service is the most effective solution.
I want to conclude by calling for action,
I want to be a collective call to action.
If you are president or a member of Congress,
You become the first person in history
National service is implemented in a sustainable manner on a large scale.
Our goal, within ten years,
On the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration,
To increase national service positions from 65,000 opportunities for young Americans
Million: one million full-time jobs every year.
If you are a director of higher education, you can establish service fellowships for a year
Integrating service with learning
Where Sargent Shriver’s memorandum refers to President Kennedy in February
He wanted to do it.
He wanted to run the Peace Corps through colleges and universities,
But the infrastructure did not exist at the time.
Today we have more than 200 colleges and universities
You provide service fellowships for one year
The honorary rank is then awarded, for several cases, to students who do so.
If you are a business leader,
You can link the registration of national service to the person who wants to get a job.
Imagine that you are performing a national service year,
Which gives you the power to work because you have a distinct experience
In addition to all qualifications,
Social and emotional skills as well as academic and real world experience,
Which are related to the labor force.
If you are a non-profit organization leader,
You can create public service functions and help you accomplish your tasks.
If you are young, you can find a one year service opportunity
To realize your passion for a year-long swap,
Run by the Union of Service Years at serviceyear.org
And to develop your skills related to the labor market.
If you are a young person do not study or work
Or you were previously imprisoned, you can make a year of service and change your life.
Imagine, for a moment,
A country where young people have the opportunity to reach a certain age
To work with people of different races, ethnicities, income levels,
Backgrounds, and even political and religious differences, to a common goal.
This will change their outlook on other people,
Their ability and confidence to face great problems,
And their love for the homeland.
They will learn to believe in things until death,
Develop ideas strong enough to change the world,
And to realize as the founders hope
The importance of the pursuit of happiness as a collective project
And the importance of helping each other achieve achievements
And that my life is tied to your life.
Americans are moving in this country for different reasons,
They are ready to serve larger issues of their own.
My dream of America is a universal voluntary service.
I hope to achieve that dream together
And finally become an indivisible nation.
Thank.
