MEETING THE ENEMY A feminist comes to terms with the Men’s Rights movement | Cassie Jaye | TEDxMarin

Translated by: YAN GAO Proofreader: Ziqi Zhou
In 2013, I decided to face my opponent.
At that time I was 27 years old, is a small achievement documentary producer,
Proud feminist.
At that time, I had a great deal of determination to expose it
Dark side of the Patriarchal Movement (MRM).
At that time, I knew about the patriarchal movement
Completely from the Internet information,
About a very radical opposition to women’s equality in discriminating against women.
Of course, I have done a lot of work before
Women’s issues.
I directed a number of documentaries on the theme of reproductive rights,
Single mother,
And STEM professions need women more and more.
When I realized that no one had ever had the patriarchal movement
When recorded in the form of a movie,
I think, by exposing those who obstruct the equality of women
For me to continue fighting for this, is a good opportunity.
So, in a year, I visited North America,
Meet the leaders and followers of the patriarchal movement.
I interviewed every male chauvinist everywhere,
As little as two hours, as many as eight hours,
Male rights activists (MRA),
44 people interviewed were taken.
There is a very important rule in documentary filmmaking.
As an interviewer, you can not interrupt the interviewee during the interview.
So I ask questions, and then get their complete story of life.
At that time, I did not realize it,
But now I look back, I understand,
Although I was interviewing at that time, I did not really listen to it.
I heard them talking
I also know the video camera,
But those moments, I sat opposite the opponent,
I did not listen carefully.
What am I doing?
I am looking forward to
I am waiting for that sentence
Or even just a few consecutive words,
Can prove that I am willing to believe that:
That is, their opposition and dislike to women.
And the origin of the wars between women.
Several times, I think I have found those points.
One of the patriarchal athletes
say to me,
“Just need to go out, just take a look,
Everything you see in your eyes is built by men. “
Oh!
This argument is simply too anti-women.
I feel my jaw tightening.
But I just sit there quietly, like a professional documentary filmmaker should do,
At the same time angrily biting upper and lower teeth.
(laugh)
After a year shooting material,
I began to review the collected 100-hour film original film,
Repeatedly play and make records,
These let me believe I said,
The people who listen to what you say most often are those who record what you say.
Please remember this sentence.
(laugh)
Well,
I started typing those words verbatim, meticulously,
It was during this process that I started to realize
My initial subconscious reaction to some of the statements
In fact, there is no valid reason,
The feeling of being violated also can not stand the test.
It’s about those men who have built it up
Tall buildings and bridges are anti-feminine?
I think, let’s change the gender perspective, what will happen?
Perhaps, feminists would say:
look around,
Everyone you see is born of women.
Wow!
This is really powerful counterattack.
And true.
Do you say that there is suspicion of discrimination against men?
I do not think so.
It is only recognition of our uniqueness and valuable contribution to society.
Fortunately,
When I was making “Red Pill” movie,
I recorded the diary in the form of video, which eventually traced my mental journey,
When I reviewed the 37 videos recorded in that year,
There is a common theme.
I often hear men who speak of sportsmen
A reasonable and legitimate concept:
But in my mind,
I would like to add a gender bias or a bias against women in their perspectives,
I thought that was what they wanted to say, but did not say an idea.
Here are two examples to illustrate.
A male chauvinist, MRA, would say,
“In the United States, there are over 2000 shelters for domestic violence,
It is open to women.
But for men, there is only one.
In fact, many famous studies have shown that men are equally likely to be abused. “
I prefer to hear them say
“Women do not need as many as 2,000 shelters,
They made mistreatment.
This is a complete conspiracy. “
But review all the original video,
Patriarchs talk about shelters,
Talk about the blogs they record,
As well as their live video on YouTube,
They did not attempt to lift funding for women’s shelters.
Not at all.
They just say that men are also abused,
They too should be caring and sympathetic.
Say an example.
Male chauvinists may say,
“Where is the justice when a man is falsely accused of raping a woman?
It is because of this allegation,
He lost his college scholarship
And was labeled ‘rapist’ this can not escape the label. “
I prefer to hear them say
“Being raped is not a big deal for women.”
It is as if I did not hear the word “raped”.
What I hear is, “He was accused of rape.”
Of course, rape is really serious,
And all the male chauvinists I met think,
This is a horrible thing for anyone.
Finally, I finally understand what they want to express is,
They are trying to bring gender equality into dialogue,
Who, in order to
Kind, respectable man stood up,
He lost his scholarship, worked or worse, his children,
Because he was accused of not doing anything at all.
(sigh)
Yes, I can not always deny what they think.
These are real questions.
But in my attempt to refuse to fully agree with my opponent,
I am subjective and instinctive assumption,
Transferred to recognize these issues, but insisted that this is a female issue.
So here are two more examples.
Male chauvinists may say,
“Men are more likely to lose ground in the fight for custody.”
I will oppose his point:
“Because women have always been unfairly regarded as guardians and caregivers.
It is because of gender discrimination that women are more often given custody. “
Yes.
(laugh)
I do not take pride.
(laugh)
Say an example.
Male chauvinists may say,
“About 78% of all suicide cases in the world are male.”
Instead, I think:
“But women are more likely to commit suicide.”
Look (I won again)!
(laugh)
Is that right?
This is not a competition.
But I’ve always tried to turn it into a race.
Why I can not care about some male issues,
To care about those male victims,
Rather than urgently assuming that women are the real victims whenever they have a chance,
Of course, after years of explaining to male chauvinists what I once did
After conducting research and verification,
Can not deny that there are still many human rights problems
Men disproportionately or individually affect men.
Parent-child fraud affects only men.
United States compulsory military service agencies conscription,
Still only affect men.
Men have significantly higher rates of death at work than women.
Mortality in war, men overwhelmingly high.
Suicide, male ratio is very high.
In sentencing differences, the average life expectancy,
Child support, child support,
False accusation of rape, criminal court bias,
Disgusting male, failed to launch,
Boys lag behind in learning,
Homeless, veterans issue,
Male baby genital mutilation,
Once pregnant, men have no choice,
For male victims of domestic violence, they lack social resources,
So many problems are very disappointing,
If you are the victim
Or any one of your loved ones faces any of these problems, and he is the victim.
These are the problems men will encounter.
Most people can not even give an example
Because they think,
“Men have their rights, they have all the power and privileges.”
However, these problems should still be acknowledged.
Men should be concerned about, concerned about,
And motivation to find solutions.
It has been ten years since I became a feminist before filming The Red Pill.
I think I have done enough to deal with the issue of equality between men and women.
But until I met these men’s rights activists,
I finally started to consider the equation of equality between men and women
the other side.
This does not mean that I agree with all of them.
But I felt the great value of listening,
And start trying to stand in their perspective to see the world.
I think if you can let my audience also listen to their heart,
It is like an upward step,
Make us equal to men and women
Have a higher level of understanding.
So from October 2016 onwards,
Movie began to be released,
I also began to receive relevant articles and comments from critics.
At that time, I felt that in the group politics related to gender politics,
What kind of role can the media play?
I also learned a difficult lesson.
When you start to think that your opponent is very human,
In turn, your group will think you lose humanity.
This happened to me.
Compared to discuss the value of the issues raised in the movie,
I became the object of this discredit,
People who have never seen the movie protest in front of the cinema,
Crying repeatedly, the film caused harm to women.
However, this is not a fact.
But I understand their mentality.
If I have never made this movie,
And I heard that the documentary about the male chauvinist is being released.
In the film, these athletes are not demonized,
I will protest screening,
Or at least boycott the movie by signing a petition,
Because I was told they were my enemies.
I was told that male rights activists oppose equality of women.
But all the male rights activists I met supported women’s rights,
And just asked this question:
“Why do not our society care about the rights of men?”
Of course, I met the biggest challenge in this process
Not against the movie,
Nor how I am treated by those mainstream media,
Even if it does annoying sometimes.
I met the biggest challenge
I conducted a detailed analysis of my own prejudices.
As a result, I found myself in the making of a movie chess opponent.
Self makes me think I am right,
Male chauvinists are second-class citizens.
Now we all know that I no longer call the feminist,
But I must clarify that I also have no anti-feminism,
And I am not a patriarchal athlete.
I still support women’s rights,
And I’m starting to pay attention to men’s rights now.
but,
I believe if we want to discuss in good faith the issue of gender equality,
We need to hear the voices of different people.
So far, it has not happened yet.
Male groups continued to be slandered,
Was mistakenly considered a hate group,
At the same time their voice was completely eliminated.
Does it mean that one of the organizations can solve all the problems?
No.
Patriarchal movement is not flawless,
Nor is the feminist.
But if one of the groups is muted,
This has become a problem for all of us.
If I can make suggestions for everyone,
I would say that we have to stop “looking forward” to be offended,
We must listen honestly, honestly and conscientiously.
This will lead us to understand
Myself and others,
Compassionate to others,
Because of experience together
We should find the answer together.
Once done like that, we will eventually heal from the inside out.
But all this must begin with listening.
Thank you for listening.
