La Discapacidad como una Capacidad | Estefania Segovia | TEDxQuitoJoven

[Applause]
before changing the world you have to
accept that you are also part of him
this is a phrase from the movie the
dreamers that tell the story of
self-discovery of three young people in the
France of ’68 but today I am going to talk to you
of france nor of may 68 insurance
you will have the opportunity to learn
about that today I’m going to talk about
disability and power
but surely they will wonder why
a seemingly normal girl is going to
talk about this and the reason why
I decided to leave my comfort zone
to tell you my story is because the
young people we do not know how and we do not
we dare to talk about disability
and all this started seven years ago
years when my life was almost perfect
She was one of the most popular girls in
school earned absolutely all
school competitions had a lot of
friends organized to all parties
had everything a 15 year old boy
I can ask
until one day I was detected lupus
systemic erythematosus
This is a disease in which all your
immune system decides to confuse
your organs with bacteria or viruses
attacking your whole body is to say my
body was eating itself
just a year after this when
I was 16 years old they were detecting me another
illness but had insufficiency
renal chronic terminal what he told me
that my kidneys had stopped
function completely that I had to
dialysis three times a week
and that there was once I acquired a
severe physical disability something that
I never asked
when they told me this everybody that
I had created they had already created for me
completely collapsed going from being a
of the most important girls in
school to be a girl for nothing beautiful
that he did not have friends that he did not have hair
and that he had nothing of self-esteem was a
very hard blow
realize that everything you had
built from nothing disappeared and that
I was going to touch you live a new reality
is not easy
but I never thought that in the middle of everything
that chaos was going to emerge my true power
and my true self will emerge
so I had to do something and in all good
contact against all good advice
as an adult I decided to tell the world that
I had a word disability that
is defined by the organization
global health as a deficiency
in your physical or mental abilities
that prevent you from developing with
Normality in society
to tell this to a 16-year-old girl
that had been rebellious by nature
that society was conditioning my
role because he had a disability
it was not easy I had to do something
to change this situation
so one day I decided to take a paper and
a pencil and make a list of things
which were the ones I did not have to do
an introspective journey and really
know me because the only way to
helping others was helping me
same
on this journey of self-knowledge
I found a lot of things things
beautiful things not so beautiful and
feelings for which all
teenagers we passed
just after this when I was 17
years they told me that my kidneys had
stopped working completely and that
there was no step back with that they told me
that I had to enter the list of
wait and what good did he have to get
a kidney donor to be able to follow
living
at this moment I realized that
speak to the world about disability and
normalizing this for others was not
enough I had to get involved
more on the subject
so I started looking for options and
I started to propose different proposals
well I met some organizations and
I met people who were in the same
situation this way I got to the
national assembly of ecuador I met the
disability law and the law of
donation of organs and tissues’ I started
organize with all these people
because for me it was not fair that all
these are these people have to live a
reality so hard reality is that never
nobody had wanted to show me before
I had to do something to change the
things and that was the time
that’s when I decided to become
in an activist for the rights of
disabled people because if I do not
he did nobody else was going to worry
for us
Time passed and I was already enjoying myself
The school was 18 years old and I was
entering the university
a place where your parents are not
are not your friends that people do not
they are interested in talking about disability
because they simply have another vision of
life or because they have other
convictions and it really is not a matter
from them
so to do something again I had
to start all over again
how could I not keep my arms
crossed I decided to investigate I realized
that a university of approximately
9,000 250 people existed 60
disabled we do not become and the
0.5 percent of the university
however, we needed to prove to
all that the disability should not be
social phenomenon that everyone
he is afraid because they do not know or
because they do not know how to talk about him
us in the disability
We found strength and we found
a means to meet all
our objectives and be able to perform
all our dreams
thus we decided to start
organize ourselves and in the middle of all this
organization
another giant event happened in my life
one day was night I was called in
actually it was the third call that I
I received it they told me that I had to do
the kidney transplant and that finally
there was a donor after three years of
have been on the waiting list
really this was a super news
great for me I knew I was going to
change my life completely than other
I was going to be able to live with much more
energy than they already had and that was
to completely change everything that I
I had lived before
however this change in my life
it would entail leaving everything all over again and
start things from scratch
it’s like that I had to suspend for a
at the moment my studies to devote myself
my health but when I return I returned
fully recharged
with this organize me again with everyone
my companions we managed to form a
movement in the university that
currently includes people
disabled disabilities of the
student federation one of those
disabled people are me
I am currently the director of the
social responsibility commission of the
federation of my university also I
contact with transplanted people
she says she will become the president of
the Ecuadorian association of patients
transplanted where we try to create
a platform for all of these
people have the opportunity to have
a different life and that the others
people do not have the opportunity to
discriminate you for a condition
as human beings we must of
understand that we all lack something
we all have disabilities
but we should use this to
find our true power and
make things that we lack
our strength
It ‘s been some years since
all this started I currently have 22
years
and the only thing I can tell you
is that growing up hurts and seriously hurts
a lot but it is the most beautiful thing that can
spend in life
I would not change to only one of the moments
of sadness, happiness, emotion and anger
because they really taught me what
I’m done and everything I can give
they taught me that in adversity I
I could fulfill all my dreams
to me the disability opened me the
doors of the world and he showed me the two
faces of love
the power taught me that they existed
much larger realities
outside of my square meter
and my own existence showed me that
as long as there is life it was my obligation
as a human being keep moving
