so hi my name’s Lee lurker and I’m here
to talk about the performing arts and
how that can help people overcome their
adversities all right so I was born
three months early and weighed just over
two and a half pounds I was in the
hospital for a really long time and had
some health problems with my eyes and
lungs too out of my muscle development
and my overall growth my parents had me
do some different activities like
dancing acting and my music lessons
these activities helped me overcome the
first of my many adversities in life the
more I participated the more I learned
that the burning arts can help kids
develop many different skills and
abilities that are helpful in school and
later on in life a great benefit of the
performing arts is the development of
skills and self presentation and
communication we must all learn how to
present ourselves improve an audience no
matter how large it is and theater can
help with that
it helps developing the ability to talk
and not just talk as and give speeches
like in those plays or movies kids can
also really benefit and something
standing in the way of most of their
education is being able to talk well as
adults however having mature manners and
having good speaking skills is great and
working with the Arts allows for having
great self-esteem and self-confidence
growth as well as the building the poi
is typical in any dancer actor all right
so now into self-expression it’s an icon
of dance it’s almost like the stereotype
but it can help kids spirits and just as
much if not more in adults it helps them
make sense of their emotions and develop
new ideas to express themselves musical
children as an example will most likely
be really happy when they are
playing a song or singing a song that
shows off their emotions the answers
however are able to show their emotions
through their dance a physical movement
rather than vocally part of confidence
is being able to express yourself and
your emotions as it gives you a better
sense of your identity and knowing who
you are really does help your internal
core confidence but the thing is an
environment created by productions
deadlines may be stressful hard and even
kind of scary but it can also be the key
part of an amazing theater education a
good outcome of it is learning the
ability to deal with the pressures of a
really short production deadline this
can lead to the successful making of a
very good well done quality product but
not just that we all need to learn how
to overcome our anxieties the Performing
heart arts sorry really do help teach
self-reliance as well as collaboration
to reach the goal and whatever that may
be the Performing Arts is also really
vague with social interaction and
cooperation making friends with people
who share the same ideas and interests
as you is commonplace this is definitely
so a theatre and theatre demands that
anyone and everyone
what piano project is a core essential
member of the team all people must and
will love the project what this is why
in theatre you will always have a good
group of friends real alienation just
doesn’t exist in the arts all of us can
help find the Performing Arts is stuffed
full of like-minded people as long as
you yourself like or at least love the
Arts these the final productions made
could never have been produced without
every member working toward the same
goal and we’re going toward that goal
hard because of the demands of
commitment and motivation theatre really
does teach it success comes piccoli the
people who aren’t very
to the task at hand or who are willing
to work together with other people these
qualities done right are useful in
almost all careers so if most people
work hard they can come out of it with a
lot of luck all right so when I was 10
in 2015
I auditioned for mothers and sons by
Terrence McNally with the speakeasy
Theatre Company in Boston I was cast in
the role of Bud Ogden Porter a young boy
who has two fathers cow and will this
play dil is the theme of AIDS same-sex
marriage and unaccepting parents but
helps his dad Cal fix his relationship
with Catherine the mother of cows from
our boyfriend who died of AIDS many
years earlier one of the reasons I was
glad to get the part was because I have
two lawns and the character bud having
two dads with somebody that’s felt
familiar to me this play much more than
others open me up to the hardships or
adversities which life can throw at you
which is interesting as the others I
wasn’t seeing it happening to other
people
these adversities were happening to me
although I didn’t feel most of the
problems in the play I have had to deal
with being harshly judged by people just
because I have two moms this play really
helped me overcome and understand why
some people just seemingly randomly
stand against you
because I always stood on one side of
the argument not really understanding
why is they didn’t like same-sex
marriage all right so there are many
different ways to develop a skill we all
understand that but a lot of but a lot
of the things you can learn or found
with performing arts theatre really
helps develop your confidence that’s
very necessary essential even to
speaking clearly and thoughtfully acting
can prepare any everyone and anyone just
speaking efficiently and confidently in
public dance really does allow for
central collaboration experiences there
for opportunities in developing clear
well organized and precise skills these
skills are highly important the
development of these skills really does
allow us to overcome many of our
adversities thank you
[Applause]
