[Music]
have you ever thought about how powerful
it feels to share your story with the
world at the end of second grade my
teacher announced that she was looping
at first I was really excited but then I
was filled with dread Djem Abuk in a
limping classroom that means you have to
spend another year with the same teacher
and with the same kids and with the same
friends and with the same girls and with
the same bullies there was this big
group of girls in my class and they make
fun of the way I looked I hope they
don’t
permanently embarrass myself but they
would say things like I don’t like gas
Olivia why do you wear your hair like
that it looks a stupid and Olivia why do
you dress like that it except eglee oh
great and and it didn’t end there they
would whisper and glare behind their
hands whenever I walked by and now to
ever wonder run for your life whenever
they saw me and they would send a
telephone chain across the lunch table I
knew with me hearing Olivia is a loser
and they told other kids not to hang out
with me and it took me a long time just
hold grownups and then I took a long
time for things to change looking back
that was one of the most unhappiest
times of my whole life and they took
away a lot of my confidence but that’s
when I started this special project that
helped me take my voice back I’m Olivia
the creator of lip bitch I use social
media to share my story with the world
each week I like a new selfie video that
helps me talk about my thinking about
reading life and the world they are a
little bit of me live and a little bit
of my seeking bets put it all together
and you have live bit little bit started
because of a project that my mom does
called The Selfish Center usually
everyone knows how to take a selfie but
not everyone knows where the selfie
tells a selfie can be a really powerful
way for you to share your story my mom
took the idea of a selfie and made it
like a Harry Potter moving portrait by
using video you can go back to your
selfie video and rethink in lots of ways
you can get feedback that will help make
your selfie video stronger I think you
making my own version of the selfie
Center really helped me make sense of
the bullying here is one of my live pets
look have you ever thought about
stereotypes stereotypes are those crazy
ideas that could be based on people have
a different color skin or boys being
better than girls the first time I
thought about stereotypes was when I did
my back for contact I’m Maria Tallchief
people said that you couldn’t be a prima
ballerina just because she was new to
American I started thinking about
stereotypes again when I walked into
dance class one day where the girl said
hey Olivia
why do you have that water bottle it’s
for boys I felt really sad in my head
because she did know that there’s no
such thing as boys stuff and girls stuff
and here’s the thing companies are
practically making stereotypes cuz
they’re putting shark water bottles in
the boys section and I found my shark
backpack in the boys section and I found
my shark shirt in the boys section it’s
like that chunk that companies are
saying that girls can’t love sharks but
I think that girls can be anything they
want no matter what the world says it’s
better to love each other than judge
each other keep reading keep thinking
and keep watching Olympics from riot en
match events all right about that
sometimes my little bit videos are hard
to make because the topics are difficult
to talk about or understand but that’s
why the bitch is so important
making Lib its forces me to think about
what I’ve learned something hard and it
also encouraged me to keep going with my
message
one of the hardest videos for me to make
was my bullying story I do it in parts
like a series because I had so much to
say and I hope that when you see the
bullying series you will hear a hopeful
message and I like to make my message
hopeful kind and true and I love to give
my audience something to think about
lots of times kids think that they don’t
have a voice that matters
but when I’m making my bits I’m proud to
say that that voice is mine my superhero
pose
one of the best compliments I can get is
when I meet a follower face to face and
they say you are just like you are
Olympics it’s really important that who
you are in line is really who you are in
person
your post to find who you are in our
mirror to the world
okay I’m blacking out for a second
my mom says Olympics helps me live out
my dream and I think she’s right without
lip fix I wouldn’t be the kind of
learner I was meant to be and just
recently on Twitter one of my followers
commented that my videos really showing
that commitment to social justice I
didn’t even know what that was but the
comment made me want to learn more and
once I found out about this big idea
I would felt really proud that a
follower was encouraging me and it made
me want to do even more bits a big part
of my message is that kids can teach us
and lots of times kids think the only
adults can be the teachers but I think
that you don’t really have to be an
adult to teach others I produced my
social media accounts to share important
ideas I have my followers can teach me
and I can teach them it’s like a really
awesome shared story when you post on
social media lots of times people don’t
even think about how you can tell your
story through your posts a big part of
my mess one of would base has been the
best project I’ve done in my whole
entire life that’s a whole decade my dad
told me that everyone would giggle when
I said that and Lippitt started out was
just a project for me to grow my
thinking sharing and reading but I also
grew my heart I learned how to be a good
digital citizen from this work make your
story one that matters not just to you
but to others connect to places you
never dreamed possible and become a
digital vemma like that connects to
other people and positive ways your
story matters and deserves to be shared
keep reading keep thinking and keep
watching Olympics for more ideas about
your books and life
