Functional fitness and its necessity | Shwetambari Shetty | TEDxAmritaUBangalore

[Music]
I’m 37 years of age yes I know I love
saying that because I mean I’m not being
pompous but I know because of my fitness
levels I don’t quite look it and I can
actually lift more than twice my body
weight and that’s why this set up here
because I’m going to demo that for you
and not just say that I can this one is
probably going to be a little tough this
time because not only am i recovering
from an injury but I’m also not super
warm right now but I’m gonna do it
nonetheless for you okay okay my hands
are very slippery that’s thank you
that’s a hundred kilos I normally lift
120 but like I said I’m just recovering
so that’s that thank you very much for
the loud round of applause well now what
did I just do anyone I did a deadlift
right a deadlift is nothing but picking
stuff from the ground that’s it
but if you end up picking stuff from the
ground very abruptly hinging from the
hips just like that without putting load
on the right muscle groups you can hurt
yourself have you seen anyone around you
or yourself when you bend down to pick
up something you literally put your hand
on your back and you’re like rising
slowly anyone here no yes okay great but
if you do it with the wrong technique
and if you do it with a weak back which
is primarily due to lack of exercise
chances of you hurting yourself
your spine are extremely high now
well what it looks like but what it
really is or what it really is
and what it looks like right that’s me
by the way both of that is me okay now
thank you
functional fitness is pretty much the
way to go and when I say functional
fitness I talk about movements like
deadlifts and squats and all of that
that just replicate the movements that
you do on a day to day basis for me
growing up in you know the idyllic
village of Qunu / which is a part of
Mangalore life was really going to be
about marriage I dreamt of four kids and
two dogs and a beautiful lawn but what
really happened is pretty much very
different I am today an entrepreneur you
know thanks to all my corporate students
and the big shift and risk I took to get
into the fitness industry through dance
zumba fitness all of that it brought me
to a place where I could become an
entrepreneur I could start off a place
called the tribe fitness club which was
all about functional training and group
fitness and we were pretty much the only
ones who kick-started group fitness this
was about four years ago and there was
no looking back after that and being an
entrepreneur not only taught me how to
do sales and marketing and grow the
business but also taught me that when
your housekeeping is missing you also
have to clean the toilets right and I’ve
done it and I’m extremely proud of it
but in all of this yes I definitely
ended up getting married but I think
what I missed out on is probably having
kids and the two dogs now I’m not sure
if that’s gonna happen this life I’m
gonna miss it maybe but I do know that
the purpose of my life is probably a lot
more which is changing people’s lives
making people fitter healthier and
happier
and I like you thank you so much and I
feel extremely extremely happy that in
the last six years of my journey of
being a fitness instructor which I never
imagined I would be that I have touched
so many lives you know I get like these
messages and calls every single day
saying thank you and what I do is just
you know try to practice and preach
about fitness really but my purpose of
life is pretty much defined and I know
that this is really what I want to do
for the rest of my life and what it is
taught me is that Fitness is not about
the mirror Fitness is not about getting
into a particular attire it can be but
it is not it’s not about having a to-do
list which says exercise it’s not about
buying that gym membership and saying oh
I have a membership at this fancy place
it is really about fitting it into your
daily schedule making it a part of your
life just like you would with food you
eat every day
you bathe every day you brush every day
similarly you need to exercise every day
and fitness is for everyone everyone
okay now when I say everyone am I saying
that the only way of fitness is going to
the gym how many of you go to the gym
here just one hand okay that’s five okay
how many of you do other sort of fitness
and not a gym brilliant okay that makes
me feel amazing right now because I’m
really talking about functional fitness
right amazing do you I’m not saying you
don’t need to go to the gym or you
shouldn’t you know great if you love the
gyms you love the machines fabulous go
on do it but what I’m saying is you
don’t need the gym to be fit right you
don’t need to feel like oh I need to
have that membership I need to go to the
gym every day to be fit and healthy you
can do a lot of functional movements
right where you are
at a fitness center at a studio close to
your house at the park or in your house
just to maintain basic
Circle Fitness and to be healthier and
to be able to age gracefully remember
you need to age gracefully
okay when I talk about functionality I’m
of course going to do a demo what I’m
really talking about is you don’t need a
treadmill to get your cardio you don’t
need a smith machine to do your squats
for strong legs there are so many
functional movements which you can do
with your body
okay just using your bodyweight and
using some free weights you can do
everything you need achieve your fitness
goal the squat is the most most most
basic functional movement in exercise
okay
we are born with a range of motion like
oh what it looks like looks like a
mistake but it’s not I’ll tell you why
how many of you used an Indian toilet at
least once in your life
if you’re doing it daily amazing okay
so when I define a squat to anybody or
in my class I don’t say keep your feet
shoulder-width apart
hinge your hips imagine sitting on a
chair I don’t need to imagine sitting on
a chair I sit on a chair every single
day I know what it’s like to sit on a
chair I say imagine sitting on a ground
toilet if you ever have because the
moment I say that everyone knows you
need to sit like this there is no other
way right this is being fit and to give
you an example of that I have this
that’s a child of course maybe four or
maybe yeah five years
he’s a friend’s kid kids know no other
way to sit except this way am i right
yeah they play that way they eat that
way they probably watch TV that way
whatever that’s the range of motion each
one of us is born but when I told him to
do a squat he did it well until here but
he couldn’t go below that again because
you’ve killed that mobility and
flexibility you were born with if you
manage to retain that I can assure you
that you will be able to age gracefully
which is what Fitness is all about that
is an elderly lady sitting in the exact
same position and what is she doing
pulling stuff out of the fridge how do
we normally pull out of the stuff for
the fridge we open and we go down down
down down in this way
that’s not functional chances of you
hurting your back are higher the
functional way of pulling something out
of the fridge is go down and pull it out
that’s my mother and yeah I mean some
good genes here right now that’s my mom
and she knows no other way to squat she
prefers sitting down instead of a chair
she always does everything functional
another functional movement that I want
to show you
is the deadlift how would you just pick
up something off the floor just pick
something up right there on the stairs
yeah typically when I say pick something
off the floor we just go boom right
hinge at the hips which is what she’s
doing right there which is completely
incorrect first thing attacks your back
why did I do a deadlift it means nothing
but pick something off the floor so when
you’re picking something off the floor
it can be a card in heavy one light one
it can be a piece of paper
remember hinge at the hips keep your
knees soft put all the load on your
quads this is how I would pick up I
wouldn’t pick up this way I would pick
it up this way that’s functional fitness
I’ll be clear yeah it’s like I feel like
I’m lecturing students you know like I’m
the teacher right another very very
important thing for you to take away
from this functional fitness is to watch
your core we always refer to call as ABS
incorrect I’m sure a lot of you know
that already
core consists of all this – your limbs
which means your spine also falls under
your core and for you to be able to age
gracefully spine and taking care of the
spine is extremely extremely important
degeneration of spine or what we call
also degeneration of bones all of this
is a natural process of aging okay it
will happen to each one of us this is
your normal healthy spine that’s a
degenerating spine where you slowly
become that way and now you know with
all our activities you’re definitely
going there a lot sooner
so when I went to my chiropractor
recently I was told whoa how is it that
you have a spinal for 19 year old I’m
like yeah that’s because I’ve been
exercising for so long right now this
process cannot be avoided but this
process can be delayed delay the process
of degeneration of spine by
simply being active how do I measure
fitness how do you measure fitness what
it looks like and what it really is a
marathoner do you consider a marathon or
fit I think so – do you consider a
bodybuilder fit yes
do you consider a powerlifter fit yes
all of them are fit but you know what’s
lacking a marathoner has to run those
many miles and so much practice goes in
that your muscle mass starts
deteriorating dangerous for the body
because the more muscle you have the
most stronger you are the more protected
your joints are and the more safe you
are from injuries a bodybuilder who’s so
muscular well if I tell him to if I have
to like see him have a shower he may not
be able to reach back like he will
struggle because there’s so much muscle
you know your movement your mobility and
flexibility completely deteriorates
power lifter however has a lot of
mobility lot of flexibility a lot of
power
they’re amazing but sometimes endurance
or stamina can take a hit because a
focus on endurance training is not so
much and they don’t even need it but all
of them are super fit but what you
really need to keep in mind stamina
that’s enough endurance to be able to
run few flights of stairs to be able to
run with your kids or even your
grandkids strength enough muscle mass in
the body to protect all your joints and
to be safe from injuries and most
importantly flexibility and mobility
flexibility is your muscle length
mobility is the range of motion right
all the sports people if they don’t have
enough flexibility mobility chances of
them hurting themselves early is very
very soon
bottom line Fitness is not just about
what it looks like it’s more about being
active don’t think you can exercise one
hour and then not exercise or not move
at all okay it doesn’t work that way
it’s about ensuring you do your blood
test every six months and you have a
good blood report it’s ensuring that you
don’t have any nutritional deficiency is
like b12 and vitamin D and all of that
it’s simply about
aging gracefully thank you
