Empowerment of Social Media | Jakub Borowy | TEDxYouth@CopernicusNo33

at the end of 18th century Benjamin
Franklin sets only two things are
certain in life death and taxes but more
than 200 years later the least of
certain things in our life has
significantly increased and it’s
actually a great opportunity for us one
of the things we cannot avoid right now
is rapidly increasing importance of
social media in our life of its of any
kind in the United States it would be
Twitter in Western Europe Instagram and
in Poland obviously Facebook well at
least after 2009 earlier it used to be a
masterpiece called
masterclass oh right I loved it or Drona
very often do I consider it a great way
to waste time to procrastinate although
let’s be honest our generation would
procrastinate even if we lived in the
time of Paulo so it oughta start
conversations we are not confident
enough to start in the real life and to
some extent it might be true I mean
who’s not familiar with tremendous
amounts of memes or stupid videos with
cats however if we are able to see the
bigger picture here it turns out that
social media is actually an extremely
powerful tool and its really worth
noticing if I were to use one word to
describe social media in 2018 I
definitely say empowerment empowerment
that’s quite an interesting choice isn’t
it I mean we usually associate it with
feminism in the context of empowerment
of women or with people like Nelson
Mandela or Martin Luther King jr. and
the empowerment of minorities this is
however completely different type of
empowerment and to be quite frankly
honored to be honest I think this one is
actually the most powerful all right
sounds delightful
but who’s actually being empowered well
the answer is very simple
we are we as the customer customers are
empowered by social media if we manage
to understand what opportunity we what
opportunity we have how unprecedented it
is and most importantly how to use it we
can actually become the creators of the
reality because by influencing the
market we basically influence every
single aspect of our lives I hope that
by the end of my talk I will motivate
you to be active on social media and to
Tate and to to use this chance because
well after all I think it was Dante who
said something about being natural in
the time of moral crisis I’m sure you
know that word you know before I start
analyzing the impact of social media
market itself I’d like to talk about the
most popular and commonly known example
of social media and obviously I’m
talking about
I think the most controversial figure in
global politics in those decades which
is obviously Donald Trump this is one of
the bests of his tweets he didn’t that’s
one of my favorite his twits played a
vital role in the election of 2016 in
United States of America and a lot of
people criticize him for the way he was
writing to all those twits
however he not Hillary Clinton was the
one who has become the 45th president of
United States of America okay so now we
should ask ourselves two questions first
of all how the hell did he do it and
second the more important is what lesson
what what should we learn from this
lesson and the answer for the second
question is absolutely one of the
explanations why we can achieve so much
thanks to the social media it’s a
perfect example
of a win-win type of relationship
because as you can see maybe not on this
tweet but generally speaking Donald
Trump and his target groups helped each
other a lot because Trump needed those
votes in order to win the election and
he did and those red colors for instance
or put forward on poor white Americans
who are his target groups now has a
representative in the White House so
it’s beneficial for both sides okay
American politics is surely very
interesting but how does it refer to the
topic of my talk well very often we
divide the market into two groups the
producers and the customers and we
usually perceive them as two opposing
sides and from theoretical point of view
it might be true I mean it can be proved
even on such trivial examples like the
loss of demand and supply however in
reality thanks to the social media the
producers and the customers actually can
cooperate unfortunately for us they
start they start doing that so for
instance that the first big major change
which happened thanks to the social
media is the fact that the market is no
longer producer oriented but customer
oriented which can be proven for
instance by rising popularity of
customer related management which
basically means that we all of us as the
customers are in the position of power
it’s not feeling stunning it’s
definitive power you know to have all
this power on the market powerful and
and fantastic for me it is that creates
a situation in which both producers and
customers want to help you help each
other because customers want to be in
touch with producers because they want
to know about promotions about coupons
about complaints and stuff like this and
producers
obviously want to be in touch with
customers in order to know exactly what
should be produced so all we need to do
is just to connect the dots as simple
all right so how do we turn it the dots
well let me give you an example just
couple of days ago I received four
presentations sorry for my
entrepreneurship and some in four
economics to ofwar so because now it’s
at the factories just an organization
which helps students in preparations for
exams and tests and what is very
important in this case I was just one of
thousands if not hundreds of students
who had given this opportunity and who
had given this those four presentations
and obviously it’s a great deal for both
sides because I have the presentations
and I trust them because I know they
want to help me and they have gained the
trust of a lot of students which is
going to pay off for both sides
obviously okay so let’s take a closer
look to that case of those of myself
getting the four presentations but quite
and conventionally let me start from the
end okay so we have the final product we
have myself getting four presentations
right before that just couple of minutes
before that I tested them on Facebook in
order to ask for those four
presentations and now you may ask why in
the world would I ask such a random
question with no reason I’m not that
phrase yet absolutely I’m not crazy at
all I asked them because couple of
minutes earlier they wrote a post on
Facebook to encourage students to ask
for this for presentations so it
actually seems like it was their
initiative in the first place
but let’s make another step backwards
why do I know about those presentations
and why do I have those presentations
and at least some of you do not why do I
know about it and at least some of you
didn’t well the obvious answer is I
follow them on Facebook just like
thousands of other economy-related pages
and I’d like to stop here
a second because this is what I call
this social media empowerment it doesn’t
sound very tough does it I mean all you
need to do is just to clean light
buttons on a couple of fan pages that we
like but the results are going to be
absolutely stunning
if not
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
that’s my favorite word by the way it’s
it’s going to pay off because you’ll
have an artist to contest materials to
tips how to do certain things and to
materials
you wouldn’t get without lighting those
front pages it’s also a great another
example of a win-win situation because
very often for instance McDonald’s and
Bobby burger Bobby burgers right give
you free dreams for liking their posts
or for sharing their posts and Facebook
so you basically get a lemonade for free
because it doesn’t cost you anything to
share something on Facebook and they
could get an advertisement in the cost
of one lemonade which is not that much
food for them I believe so as you can
see actually like in front pages on
front pages on Facebook it’s not only an
entertainment but it’s also a great
investment okay but during budgie at the
factory I’ve told you how you can get
benefits from just like in their posts
and sharing their posts on Facebook but
this is basically but this isn’t this is
not how we influence the market but how
we gain profits from just liking their
or commenting from under their posts so
why is the topic of my talk how does the
social media allow us to control the
markets and not what benefits can be
read from the social media and the
answer is I’m Spencer e and in order to
get the answer we need to make another
step backwards in the process of myself
getting those four presentations and ask
ourselves a simple but very meaningful
how did they know that so many students
need those presentations and the reason
is actually quite unexpected in my
opinion when economics who have also
published their posts and they told that
from this year there is going to be an
obligatory entrepreneurship test before
you get to the university a lot of
people a lot of students so their
disapprobation on Facebook telling that
they have no time to read the boots
given for this test and obviously they
were lying I mean let’s be honest they
probably have time to read each of this
boot several times they’re just lazy to
do it but they did something much better
than that they publicly show their
disapprobation and they brought this
topic to that or that to the attention
of others on Facebook which led the
companies and let the businesses know
what exactly is lacking from the market
which as you probably know is the most
important thing from the market all
right so now we can see we can actually
influence the market by using social
media but it still seems that it’s like
it’s only in the locals trail not in a
global scale fortunately for us that is
changing as well and it’s all thanks to
the social media it’s obvious defense to
the social media we can achieve positive
global changes
thanks to doing the same thing which is
the proactive use of social media but
instead of commenting on our own needs
we can spread the awareness about
organizations and companies and your
absence whether they are positive or not
my favorite example of spreading the
message is Khan Academy most likely some
of you know what is the Khan Academy
it’s a nonprofit organization which
allows students all around the world to
get a free online education and it was
funded by Sal Khan and they didn’t want
to have anything to in return they just
wanted to defer free arses to education
to all that healed all that
all around the world but thousands of
students and thousands of their parents
started to share their positive
experience with Khan Academy and fancy
that more and more people got to know
about Khan Academy which helped them to
study and that helped Khan Academy
itself to develop that was also very
motivating for all other ambitious young
and ready to help people because they
knew they saw that their hard work is
going to be rewarded and to pay off very
quickly very importantly this I mean
social media what’s both ways and it can
work in a positive way just slide in
Khan Academy or a negative way let us
see that since Facebook and Twitter
become very popular major company is
publicly supporting anything like racial
celebration or discrimination of any
minorities or even cut it off the
backwards they know that that would be
very controversial and that was very
serious social implications because more
and more people who for instance still
believe in racial segregation start to
think that well maybe just maybe maybe
they are the only ones maybe no other
people believe in racial separation
anymore and that’s why we can encourage
them this way to change their mind and
when we talk about negative how not to
use the social media I have my two
favorite examples the first one is
probably you know the kid from I think
this example is actually exaggerated a
little bit but it’s still funny so as
you can see this is the young boy with a
green sweatshirt with the coolest monkey
in the jungle written on it so as you
can see that was not the best
advertisement H&M has ever done
they were slammed for this and on
Facebook and quite frankly I do not
think they did it on purpose but I do
know that they were slammed for this and
they definitely wish they hadn’t done it
and that’s even better that’s my
favorite example how not to use the
social media that’s Tiger that’s the
commercial published on August the 1st
2017 which is obviously an anniversary
of Warsaw Uprising and yes as you may
expect this graphic went viral
very quickly on Facebook almost as
quickly as the revenues dropped so
that’s quite unfortunate for them
definitely finish in the topic of
positive changes the social media
approach the market it’s worth to
mention the corporate social
responsibility that’s a trend on a
global market which says that organisers
organization no longer term only about
their profits but also about the value
they’re socially desired values which is
very important for all of us because
well because the organisation start to
help other people it can be also
observed that probably if not is that
since Twitter and Facebook became so
viral more and more companies are
willing to contribute to the them to to
charities and to pay the donations in
order to be able to pub to publish on
their fan pages that you know their
human side that they want to help too
as you can see Facebook is no longer
just a way of procrastinating but it’s a
powerful tool and a great way to realize
both your social and your own goals even
if you want to become a famous blogger
or youtuber you know legislature the
number of one-man shows I mean if there
was a public official so the one would
be very surprised for me I enter same
with blots about things you didn’t know
even exist
or about makeup because they are very
popular cheer and Fest is the social
media you can share your knowledge and
possibly become famous which is very
fortunate I believe and thus once again
I strongly encourage you to be proactive
on social media
and to use this chance because I
strongly believe that this chance was
not given to any previous generation and
as Dante said you know I need to do I
need to say this word because that’s
integral part of my life the deepest
hunt of hell or is it for those who
remain are only the time of moral crisis
so we may look at our current times as a
sort of moral crisis and to use wisely
and proactively social media as a way of
not being out for us we may see this
chain really make the world a better
place [Applause]
