Susan Sarandon | The ’90s: Interview Outtakes

the success and the animosity that
Thummim louise provoked was a total
surprise I just knew that that it was
very different in that you rarely get a
chance to work with other women usually
they dole out two per film and they hate
each other just because one’s older ones
younger or whatever the reason isn’t and
so to have a buddy film I mean later on
I did Roman soldier vana
but to be able to work with other women
is very unusual no matter what the film
is I didn’t see it as a feminist
statement at all but that shows you how
bad things were because just by putting
two women in the lead of the film it
became a feminist statement when I met
with really I said you know I’m not
interested in doing a revenge film I
don’t want to be one of the guys and and
it was written that they jump around and
they bought the truck and then when she
killed the guy she had a she killed him
like a policewoman held the gun and I
felt that um I didn’t like that idea I
think that she’s just trying to shut him
up and she’s because she talks to him
afterwards
Louise is trying to figure out why men
think it’s okay why does that truck
earth we had a dialogue in that scene
why do you think it’s alright to stick
out your tongue and do all those things
don’t you have a mother don’t you have a
sister I mean why would you think that’s
acceptable why would you think that’s
sexy she’s trying to understand so she’s
not just trying to punish everybody and
for me that made it different than a
male driven revenge film she knows she
has to pay a price and in other revenge
films the guys don’t pay a price she
doesn’t feel that it’s okay to kill
someone even
under those circumstances I think these
women have options that you don’t
normally see in Thelma Louise and I
think this idea of not settling speaks
to a lot of people I got fan mail where
people said the Rocky Horror Show
started me thinking and I left town
after Thelma and Louise so I think there
are people that feel they’re trapped and
whatever little reality they’ve created
in their hometown or wherever it is and
sometimes you have to just understand
that you have the option to rewrite the
story that you’re telling with your life
and that’s what these women do
you
