I think the West Wing matters because it
speaks to who we aspire be as nation and
who we aspire our public servants to be
even though oftentimes we know they’re
not when I read the the pilot of the
West winning I I knew when I saw Aaron
Sorkin’s name I knew it was gonna be
great because I’d followed his career
and he truly is one of the great writers
and I instinctively knew that you don’t
mess around you don’t find it you’re
paraphrasing you don’t make it your own
and do all of the stuff that actors do
almost 90% of the time particularly when
what they’re really doing is just trying
to make it better you’ll need to do that
with Aaron and you can’t I can remember
doing one of our patented eleven page
five character single shot walk and
talks and I to come in at the very end
and you never wanted to be the end
because if you screwed it up the end
it’s like a relay race dropping the
baton at the finish line and I come in
at the end I think I have one line I
think it was um mr. president I don’t
think so
and I came in and I said ah and mr.
president I don’t think so
Aaron jumped up another monetary system
it’s um mr. president not a mr.
president and we went again Sam Seaborn
is always gonna be one of my favorite
characters I’ve ever done if not v4 for
any number of reasons I loved him I
loved him and I loved what he stood for
when he represented I loved his
nerdiness I loved that over the weekend
he would take pamphlets home to read and
I loved that he loved outer space and
they couldn’t find a girl and that he
would do anything for his boss and
anything for his friends and I guess
really when you think about it Sam is my
idealized version of myself we loved we
loved every minute when the cameras were
rolling on the west wing because we did
know that we were doing something good I
mean actors know when it’s good
everybody knows that’s good and we
didn’t know if people would like it we
didn’t know people would be interested
and that they responded to it was great
but we were all as just as as actors so
elated to have something really great to
do
