Brian Williams | The ’90s: Interview Outtakes

I get to anchor the oldest broadcast on
one of the oldest over-the-air
television networks inside a building
that was built at the height of the
depression in New York City and that
affords me the ability to say no to the
occasional Anna Nicole Smith story I
have it pretty good I can sit here and
tell you that not one of our viewers
thinks that when Nightly News ends and
access or extra or entertainment tonight
begins they are the same broadcast I’ve
been able to appear on comedy shows and
go back to my day job it has given me a
little flexibility there’s an old habit
Asher in New York passed away now and
his expression used to be on radio ads
and educated consumer is our best
customer I don’t worry so much about the
blending the melding of entertainment
and news but I would like educating
consumers to come to us as viewers I
think people get the difference between
say NBC Nightly News or one of the
so-called big three Network evening news
broadcasts and those shows that come on
after them a Current Affair Rupert
Murdoch changed the game he changed
media that happened in the late 80s that
started surging entertainment media
became a huge industry starting in the
90s is it right alongside us yes do we
have to note it sometimes yes do those
waves splash up against us do
entertainment stories find their way
into news because you can’t change the
taste of the American people sometimes
but I’m not worried about it because
when times get tough and issues turn
serious we’re there we’ll go anywhere on
the planet when we do the viewers come
find us there’s still intense engagement
