Roseanne Barr | The ’90s: Interview Outtakes

I wanted to see my life on television
because my life was real and everything
in my life was real and still is to this
day real and I don’t book myself or and
I try not to to anybody else
and you know I just tried to live right
down the middle
with my beliefs and be like who I really
am which is hard it’s hard on TV and off
of TV but I’ll tell you what this first
38 years of my life before I got on TV
they were a lot harder than anything I
did on TV because once I was on TV I
never had worry anymore I thought I was
gonna be able to feed my kids or pay my
rent and I have to think about that the
enormous popularity of the Roseanne show
I ascribed to one thing only it had a
lot of laughs people got some good
laughs and jokes itself around the water
cooler on Monday at work and you know
even at church too and you know wherever
they went you know they were g-rated
jokes and they were hilarious and those
are the hardest jokes to write or those
g-rated ones I had a lot of great
writers on the Roseanne show because I
had taste most have never had written
for television before but I thought well
when I’m in there I’m going to try to
open as many doors for people who you
know are funny and smart Judd Apatow I
gave him his first job and Joss Whedon I
gave
job and Oh Oh the god there’s so many
and they’re all really good too
as a show progressed and we you know
became more successful I was given more
control and you know which I appreciated
and I always attempted to manipulate
more of it week after week because
that’s what comics do and yes I couldn’t
push then it wasn’t any fun and you know
they let me push and they had great
respect for me and it was all like ended
up great I was able to overcome most of
my grudges thanks to voodoo and you
don’t move on with my life
