as you know general the American people
are being told at this moment that
Manuel Noriega is a criminal he is a
drug dealer he is an arms dealer he is a
money laundry not just the indictment US
senators are charging you that way the
State Department wants you out of this
job you are telling a wonderful story at
one point about how actually you beat
the executive producer of the show for
an interview with Manuel Noriega Ed
Bradley and his producer David Gelber
had been trying to get Manuel Noriega he
was still the commandante at that time
down in Panama and they’ve been trying
and trying to try and finally the word
came he was going to see mr. Bradley and
mr. gelber and he was going to do the
interview and it turned out that when
that word came Bradley was over in Burma
I think it was he couldn’t get him back
in time to do this correct and meanwhile
Nightline was down there frantically
trying to make sure that they got him
first yes such a joy that we will know
this in the news business don’t we all
know whatever the other people are up to
so we went down there and I wasn’t sure
when I got to see him and the fella by
the name of Ronnie who would have ranged
all this I wasn’t sure that it was going
to come off but I really wanted to do it
because I knew a great deal about there
were all kinds of questions I wanted to
ask this man none of which were
calculated to make him feel comfortable
so I saw that he you know they used to
call him pineapple face yes because he
had had a bad case of acting and at this
very moment Nightline was convinced
we’ve got him correct and you walked
through the door and you say what and I
say to come and Dante come outside in
the parking lot with me I really mean it
and I got outside in the parking lot and
I said look you see this
have I had acne and I have a certain
number of pox as a result of it and I
gotta tell you it’s the we have the best
camera crew in America they’ll make you
look as smooth as a babys back side I’m
serious he said you’re on and we walk in
and the people from Nightline were
walking around saying what what happened
it’s right do you feel like that’s the
secret in many ways to getting any
interview step in hit the ball and say
no holds barred this is the person I
want or does everybody take a different
approach everybody takes a different
approach there’s a lot of flowers said
there’s a lot of notes sent some people
even offer a little money look this is
the time of the get back when I was
doing Noriega there were that many shows
were who were searching for it searching
for so-called gets there’s nobody better
than Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer or
they work these people there you work
them usually they send flowers they
gifts whatever they have to offer his
credibility integrity they know that
they’re going to be treated fairly but
seriously and of course Noriega when he
wrote a book about it this part of the
book he said that I had had sandbagged
him I felt really sorry for a lot of
people have said that sort of thing
including among others Barbra Streisand
she does not like you oh I know do you
like her I admire her I don’t can’t say
that I like her barbara wants to control
everything and she was publicizing movie
called Prince of tides at the time so I
actually her
manager called me and said would I etc
etc and I said sure as long as she
understands that I’m going to do it my
way she called me every Sunday morning
for about a month to make sure that it
was going to go her way and so forth and
all I can tell you is that there was one
scene in particular that upset her and
she started to cry I I asked her about
her mother about the fact that even her
mom said this is essentially this is a
hard person to get along with Barbra
Streisand’s mother said she hasn’t got
time for me she did good time for anyone
she didn’t realize that I had already
talked to her mother and she suddenly
said for anyone no time for I had no
time for her and then I played it for
and then that’s when she said she began
to cry a little bit the unvarnished
Streisand is it it was a wonderful
wonderful close-up look at an individual
for whom I have great admiration for her
professionalism she’s a control freak
and and so it was an accurate picture
and I said to her you’d like to control
the she said you’re darn right I’d
lighting control this
