Mike Wallace remembers on National Geographic: Part 2 | National Geographic

you started out in life doing
commercials doing radio characters being
an actor wonder if I was an actor yeah
but I also also did the news I was the
Cunningham news a son WXYZ Detroit radio
Douglas Edwards and I with the two
Cunningham music you weren’t news people
than though right you were ripping Reade
you read what was in front of you I
think you were essentially an actor
acting the part of a news please Dave
did yes give Doug gave it to me a little
bit of credit yes I’ll give you plenty
of credit please look that was the
essence of news back than in many ways
in radio basically yes back then all
some of the biggest names in news
started out that way you had dabbled in
a lot of things commercials interview
shows a lot of things there was a
personal event in your life was not that
that helped to define you as a news
person was not dabbling well I mean you
were you living yes you’re making a
living in many things but there was a
personal event in your life which I I
find astonishing in 1962 September of
1962 my son Peter had taken the summer
off from Yale and had gone to France for
the summer and then he was going to meet
his pals after summer school and a place
called zelika strong which was a camp of
sorts where he was just going to have a
good time and this was a nice correct
they get in Greece correct in Greece he
was on the on the gulf of corinth he’d
always been fascinated by that by greece
he used when he was a kid he used to
have the garbage can on the wooden sword
and the sheet for a toga and so forth
anyway we didn’t hear from him and
didn’t hear from him and he was always
pretty careful about writing home so
finally I said something’s gotta be
wrong I’m gonna go over and see if I see
what’s going on and it was a youth
hostel camp that he was in
got there and saw that his bags were
there I said drew what happened to him
he went up the hill and it was a
mountain I said home what’s up there a
monastery two nuns live there alone in
the monastery sounds like Peter went up
there and I was on a donkey up the
mountain and I get there and I’m looking
and I’m not seeing a great deal and so I
sat down and on a ridge and I looked
down and there is my son who had fallen
about a hundred feet and obviously I
recognized him more from the clothes
that he was wearing and so we went down
and found him and took him back to
Athens and then his mother and I and one
of his brothers of course was there and
we buried him there because he was so
devoted to Greece that we figured go in
the town of Kamari and we had a little
burial plot like up through with all of
that I thought to myself you know I used
to say well the reason that I do all
these various things whether it’s a it’s
a commercial or some kind of a panel
show or something of that sort um I’ve
always said because I have to support my
kids well I’ll honor Peter by doing what
he would love to have me do he was my
copy boy at channel 13
I ain’t a show called nope Newsbeat but
he had an interest in being a reporter
himself oh yeah you know reporter or
writer and at that and at that time you
said I will become a full-time
newspersons right it seems so many times
we hear of sons trying to carry on the
dreams that their fathers could not
realize have you often thought of it
that way that you carried all I do
something about what it amounted to was
I wanted to honor Peter he was a he was
an extraordinary Seldon but naturally
but my father would say that no he
really was an extraordinary fella his
chris wallace is older brother that’s a
very long time ago is it something that
stays on your mind always like no no
when you live to be as as old as I you
realize that life is going to turn
around and bite you in the back I don’t
care who you are what your family what’s
your background how lucky life is going
to even up somehow so that’s part of who
you are of course but I don’t focus on
that it’s a wonderful memory and I had
that boy
