film came out about the giant
controversy over cigarettes and 60
minutes and you weren’t too happy in the
end with your portrayal in that film it
was a good idea to do the film it was
much too long but the last third of it
was pure unadulterated drama the sense
in the film is that you lost your
dedication to getting the truth out and
going after the story and then somehow
you recover it at the end and say yes we
now must stand for a principle and
you’re saying that never happened I’m
saying that that that happened at one
point for a period of about 12 to 15
hours and that was all of it when you
look back on those 12 to 15 hours
somebody said to me some said Mike
you’re wrong to do this and I thought
about it and I said yeah you’re
absolutely right i’m wrong to do that
look it’s much too long story to tell
all i can tell you is during the entire
time that the insider was being written
researched etc etc i was never asked
once by the writer by the producer by
the dress never asked once one question
let me ask you a few questions who would
you still like to interview after all
these years that you haven’t been able
to get the Pope the current Pope I
thought on a couple of occasions I was
going to get the chance I don’t know it
was being foolishly optimistic you’re
the love to talk to the Pope not as Pope
necessarily as
man this I want the same thing so right
here right now let’s let’s start yeah a
race a race to the phone neither one of
us is going to get him it’s too bad but
if you get him first I’ll buy you dinner
you get I get him first you buy me
dinner all right you Catholic well we go
to a Catholic Church yes so will that
help well I would imagine you know that
you never know I love the way that you
still light up after this wonderful
career about stories I hope that many of
us in the profession can do the same as
years go by I’m sure you will thank you
