James Van Der Beek | The ’90s: Interview Outtakes

well 90s personally I mean our Tamir a
decade in which I backpacked through
Europe age of 19 I didn’t have enough
money to stay in Paris for more than a
day and then by the end of the 90s I was
in Paris promoting television show and
couldn’t walk down the street of the
chanson is a with a hat on because I was
getting mom so the manganese were kind
of crazy I literally went from one day
signing my first autograph ever oh wow
this is really cool do two weeks later
being mobbed in Seattle by a crowd of
girls at an event and that we ran out of
headshots and the girls were getting
crushed against barricades and that of
anodite from cop car to get me out of
there and there was no volume control it
was just it was what it was and as
anybody who’s ever been famous among a
teenage girl crowd can tell you
teenage girls love to go crazy and they
were looking for any excuse to do it and
if you happened to be that excuse and
they’ll all start screaming and all
start going crazy
it can really get out of control I mean
I spent the better part of my my 20s
it’s in abject fear of of gaggles of
teenage girls in the 90s there are
numbered television shows like my
so-called life which did a really great
job of accurately depicting how
teenagers spoke Dawson’s Creek was
unconcerned with with how teenagers
actually spoke the more consumer how
they felt and so what you had was a
bunch of writers writing about
adolescents in the discovering of
adulthood but but putting words in these
characters mouths that could only come
from 30 something year old writers who
had ten years of therapy
the result was these these characters
spoke the way teenagers felt and and
these characters were able to kind of
crystallize that awkward adolescent
period in a way the teenagers understood
but couldn’t necessarily maybe put into
words themselves I think what made it
unique was there is never any attempt to
dumb down the dialogue and and so a
Christian said we get the script
sometimes go who talks like that and the
answer is really adults with with ten
years therapy but you know it just it
just kind of worked because I think it
gave voice to a lot of that awkward
you feel when your you’re just on you’re
not a kid anymore but you’re not quite
an adult and you’re just trying to
figure everything out
