this is Dean Potter he’s an amazing
climber as well he just broke the speed
record on the nose and did it in two
hours and 36 minutes or something with
Shawn Leary a friend of his but he’s
kind of like you know when we used to
hang out he was the young guy and now
he’s kind of you know the older veteran
they the younger guys are kind of scared
of him they call him the Dark Wizard
when he’s not around and I’m like no no
he’s cool he’s Meli’s he’s a nice guy
and they’re like no he’s scary but um
he’s a very intense character and here
he is highlighting overuse emiti Falls
and he’s actually in this photo he he
has a leash on but he’s actually done it
without a leash and we put together a
little film about him on this kind of
crossing my name is Dean Potter and I
live right here in Yosemite Valley I’m
living here 17 years this line is one of
the hardest lines that I’ve tried to
walk the moving water the wind there’s a
lot of distractions
Yosemite it really brings out my
creativity such a powerful place there’s
some sort of amazing energy going on
that fuels me late spring early summer
it’s the perfect time for releasing this
massive gush of water over the Falls has
to be totally analytical to rig a line
that’s not going to fail on air right
here I don’t want to be thinking about
lying failure
that’s why I have this incredible gear
100,000 pound shackle makes me feel warm
and fuzzy the stuff called am steel so
at this soft table it’s 40% stronger
than steel but it floats a whole new
level it’s kind of new for slacklining
for people that pull lines with the grip
hoist but something the tightrope
walkers have done probably close to a
century people just think I’m a lunatic
or an adrenaline junkie that’s not
really what’s going on with me the
beauty is mostly what I’m concerned with
it and that’s really while I’m up here
trying to cross a line over Yosemite
Falls
I’ll just focus on the beauty and on my
breath but that water doesn’t stop like
I wish I had blinders on something
moving so drastically in my field of
vision it’s a huge challenge for me
[Music]
they’re blinded white bread try one more
time really folks
want it come on do it
I was just being rocked around by the
wind and blinded by the spray of the
waterfall yeah I was supposed to fall
but somehow I did back up and kept going
when I’m out on the line it really
brings out my creativity and for me
pushing into the unknown is big part of
what I call fun seeing a new part of
yourself that you didn’t know was there
this is when it’s fun right now you know
if you’re lucky brief moments where
you’re just seeing everything seeing the
beautiful world all that’s there right
in the moment
