The Leopard Vet | Nat Geo Live

I was asked to go to Namibia to film
with some giraffes that were being
relocated in wildebeest which was
amazing experience and beautiful when
you see the giraffes you know running
wild and then the intensity of capturing
one of these is it’s just a real whilst
we were there something even more
incredible happened and a farmer knocked
on the wild vets door that we were
working with and he presented him with
two leopard cubs that he had found and
said you know they don’t look well we’re
not sure what to do with them but we
thought we’d bring them to you see if
you could help of course we all fell in
love with these leopards the vet fell in
love with these lepers and tried
everything in his power to help them and
the truth is they just they we didn’t
think they were going to make it they
were unlike cats you know in the way
that they were moving very unstable not
agile at all and we didn’t have a lot of
hope for them they were like big kittens
you know just big big I mean I still
have scratch marks on my back but they
were playful big kittens and then one
day the vet ran out of these medications
that he was trying really just
experimenting and he gave him a vitamin
B supplement and a few other things that
are used to treat liver ailments in
humans and we took him actually we took
him to a hospital a human hospital and
we laid this this big cat on a gurney
and you could imagine like the people in
the hallways as we entered with this
massive leopard now they jumped out of
the way and we did a cat scan
right literally and we did this cat scan
and the cat scan revealed that these
leopards had hydrocephalus which is a
condition that of course also happens
with humans and that’s when you have too
much fluid in the brain and we really
kind of gave up hope then but enter
these new medications that he started
giving them because he ran out of the
other ones and lo and behold within
weeks we had leopards I mean like like
really active fun-loving leopards and we
went back to that Hospital and did the
same thing this time they were really
sedated though because there you know
all the patients were little nervous and
it revealed that in fact they had been
cured miraculously because in humans
there there is no cure and in animals
there hadn’t been so it was this amazing
discovery that I witnessed in the field
and that we’ve caught really on cameras
and when this show aired hospitals
Children’s Hospital’s parents were
writing into National Geographic and
calling in saying they wanted to get a
hold of this vet and find out what he
was giving them and then do studies here
in the states which I thought was
remarkable in order would have an
amazing thing if this would lead to it
to that discovery and help children here
