Courtney Love | The ’90s: Interview Outtakes

Thanks there were a lot more girls
playing rock in the 90s and now there’s
very very few girls playing rock my
experience had been that you know
growing up in the 70s and 80s was that
rock was the domain of men and boys and
then I learned you know a lot of tricks
and things that made it to even the
playing field I couldn’t have been more
contrived about okay this is how I’m
going to be a rock star record one will
be this trick or two will be that Rick
or through movie this record four would
be that these are the rules of being
robbed so I learned all of that from
British rock stars who taught me from
bono to E McCulloch to Julie cope
whatever you know two people were just
discussing to Tony Wilson to built you
know bill Drummond learn by osmosis or
learn directly I was mentored
beautifully I mean I had the best sort
of Zelig like education in the 80s in
Great Britain you wouldn’t even believe
it and then in Portland Oregon hung out
with the rock group peas that were more
less post-punk and more about you know
cheap trick would be like the edges they
go and then they’d like try and get
backstage Sammy Hagar Van Halen
right and I would hang out with them and
um they loved me because I could talk my
way backstage had no breasts was not
considered sexual in any way but I
wanted to get back there to see why
somebody like Sammy Hagar who’s like
Short North red-leather is a rock star
and I’m not and I’m you know a teenager
at the time still so in my formative
years instead of in a proper education I
got the best education rock and roll a
person has probably ever had one of my
things I’ve always said is that a proper
rock star starts at least one hairstyle
in their career please
you know Nikki Sixx you mean like
doesn’t matter what kind of music it is
and at least one fashion trend I wore a
lot of lingerie um like 90s because I
just frankly was lazy and I like the way
the nighties book and I didn’t want to
change into clothes they were all so
cheap but once I found a dress that I
liked I would wear it until it could
stand up by itself it was so filthy you
know what you are and I mean whether
that’s art or whether that’s fashion or
whether that’s music or whether that’s
acting or whether that’s politics
it’s or with that you know literature
its own as you are and grab it and be as
prolific as possible I suppose
