Assassin’s Creed finally introduces
shields to its gameplay we built one
using the cheapest material we could
find and put it to the test using some
of our previous gadgets I think that
these grooves cut out on the sides are
linked to an interesting combat strategy
that I really want to explore there’s
limited historical information on this
subject so I hope the game developers
and Hollywood have done their homework

dude you’re not gonna believe all this
free stuff you know what this is noob
Assassin’s Creed originals takes place
in Egypt they even have some really
awesome upgrades for shields one of them
is called Alexander’s shield which I’m
guessing is Alexander the Great’s
feature that I would like are these
cutouts that you’ll see and there’s
actually some pretty interesting things
about them so first thing that we notice
is Achilles using his shield to grapple
onto the sword of Hector and he’s
throwing him off balance – Hector’s
right which allows him to counter with
the thrusting of his spear this attacks
too slow but great powerful breaks his
spear that’s pretty awesome
now this attack style would not be very
easy if you had a round shield the
groove allows you to strike with the
spear it won’t slide off the edge and
you’re leading with your defense now in
my opinion its Achilles has an advantage
because he has his defense active and
he’s able to see his opponent using this
groove which allows him to have this
awesome counter now it looks like
Billy’s using his shields basically
blind his enemy he’s using the little
cutout groove to line up his shot and
then he strikes now here you can see
that Billy is actually using his shield
to grapple on – Hector’s sword pulling
him down and off balance then he strikes
Hector’s starting to realize this and he
goes exactly for this advantage point
but it doesn’t matter because he’s able
to counter because the groove actually
holds on to his arm he’s stuck there
he’s either gonna let go of his sword
but he can’t slide off the edge of the
shield because of the way that’s shaped
I think it’s a pretty cool advantage
then he’s able to again use the edge of
this groove to sort of grapple it’s a
little bit hard to tell it may not be
actually getting this but it seems like
you could and then throwing him off
balance and then he just kicks him to
the ground at this point he’s just
toying with him so let’s see if we can
take all these satellite dishes and turn
it into a functional shield okay
and then this thing we can use as a sort
of battering ram so we can do some
shield bashing so you’re probably
wondering how did you get your hands up
these satellite dishes and no I didn’t
go stealing them off people’s rooftops I
actually found these on the side of the
road they were doing some roofing after
some really terrible weather so they’ve
been with some repairs and of course
they had to rip off all the shingle and
these went with so I was kind of feeling
like a hoarder that day I decided to
pick them all up now I have three
different sizes this one is pretty cool
but I think it’s not really what we’re
looking for kind of reminds me a proton
shield I think you’re familiar with Mega
Man in series so we’re gonna set that
one off and for another day I think this
one is just a little bit too small for
my liking and last I have two of these
awesome shields shields satellite dishes
if I think this is perfect so this is a
mending post what you do is use this
little nub here and you put this next to
like little post that goes on the ground
for your mailbox and you smack this this
basically helps to strengthen everything
it’s thinking that we could use this
kind of like a ram or a spike with
sharpened it and also gives us a nice
platform to rest our arm and for us to
actually weld a handle so I use our
laser to cut out a couple pieces here
these are going to be stencils but when
I actually cut out the slits on the
shield we’re gonna want to bend this
that over this little Ridge here you
want that to be flat or sort of convex
with the actual
shape of this shield now to do that
we’re gonna have to anneal the metal and
that’s gonna be done with a blowtorch
essentially going to soften it up so
that we’re putting too much stress on
this little Ridge here because if we
turn it too much could actually crap so
by a Mealing it’s gonna soften it and
make it safer for us to bend about
damaging the actual shield so to flatten
this we’re using a rubber mallet and
this is going to allow us not really put
any deep dents into the actual metal so
whole process is going to take some time
but I think the results are going to be
pretty nice

so the arc voltage for this was too high
so you can see there’s actually a hole
that got melted through now dave is
gonna try and fill in the voids I like
like using this MIG welder as
metal hot glue gun

right okay look that that’s like half an
inch in the in the telephone pole that’s
me
you try hard to see this man
yeah this thing was chosen yeah let’s go
start slice I don’t pull it out yet oh
my god that’s crazy dude are you getting
this for me pretty pretty heavy-duty

all right so here’s the fun part where
we actually get to test this thing out
we have a lexan riot shield this is
three millimeter think this is actually
for lighting airsoft but still it’s
pretty strong material really awesome
this is our plug out back because in
ever situation where it’s needed you can
always put my cheeseburgers right on my
grill and it will ward off animals and
it’s just kind of badass the shish kebab

I really want this thing to turn off
it’s making me kind of nervous
okay I think we’re good now and you try
throwing some bricks at it it’s gonna be
a grand old time all right so to hold
this thing on my arm using these future
doop green belts that no one actually
wants to wear because they have no
fashion value and they’re not they’re
pink green you just kind of put it in
there like this put it through the loop
and back through one of the other ones
and then you just pull it tight all
right so now that’s really punctured
through there oh yeah that’s not gonna
do much I think I could like let go of
this thing look I’m not putting any
weight on it this thing fall yeah you
said it was not gonna do anything
looks like just cutting it off the
street Oh sharp there’s actual braided
all right so this thing it’s pretty
devastating it ripped right through this
so I’m really glad that it didn’t have
Dave or somebody else try this on for
size that’s pretty much trash me and
we’re gonna see happens we’re good after
I build something I really want to try
and destroy it to see if it’s strong and
then we’re like yeah it’s pretty strong
but like after you hit it 20 times I
mean obviously it’s not bulletproof so
maybe we’ll try some rocks first you
know throw a rock at me Dave of course
of course
you can’t aim for crap you actually
tossing foot throw a big boulder I
didn’t know that that was actually
happening because this piece of metal
here actually protects pretty well work
he’s protecting me
careful now to give you a frame of
reference yeah fire and wood are like
buddies when it comes to starting a
party because there’s gas in the actual
handle you have to basically purge that
first like yeah like that but now it’s
off

yeah it is hard you can okay that kinda
hurts
part that you’ve welded in the front
what’s all the pressure you can see he
welded a piece right here that’s not
gonna basically go down all the pressure
slowly aiming down see the outline
actually surprised this thing yeah you

and weld it myself for our next welding
project we’re gonna take a class here at
hack Pittsburgh I didn’t really paint it
or anything because I was planning on
doing that after okay and I was thinking
about having a little sled here that I
could put interchangeable heads so if I
wanted to take off the spike more
defensive I could do that but this is
really good for shield bashing and I
think that’s this is a pretty cool
project and hopefully there’ll be some
new gadgets to build from the new
Assassins Creed
