I suppose the starting point of wanting
to be a designer was really from a young
age because I pretty much grew up in a
workshop my father’s workshop surrounded
by sawdust and tools and being allowed
to play with swords from a very early
age really kind of fosters and fostered
a love for a run design and then I went
on to become a trained furniture
designer and and then worked for the
conran group for many years developing
products across lots of different
categories I also think my career’s had
quite a big impact on what I think is
important in design having worked for
Conrad as I mentioned there’s a love of
food a love of of enjoying life in that
business and it definitely has made a
big impact on the way in which I
approached design the cutlery that we’ve
designed for Jamie is trying to tread
the fine line between aesthetics and
function it’s got to work hard so that
it can work in the dishwasher that it’s
the right weight in your hand most
importantly that it’s comfortable to use
it’s got to be durable it’s made from
1810 stainless steel and we want the
piece to look fantastic when it’s laid
on the table for a beautiful dinner
party and worked really hard in the
morning when it’s a children’s messy
breakfast my proudest moment in that
design is definitely when all the pieces
that we do are put together because when
you design things you design them to
work together you don’t design things in
a vacuum I mean I feel that for example
this terracotta range and the cutlery
working well with thee with this I
bought in my in my opinion and one of
the proudest moments is when at a trade
show like a hundred percent design for
example where we get to put all of our
pieces as we want them to be all
together it’s a pretty wonderful moment
when you stand back stand back and you
think wow
you know that’s all are that’s all I
stuff the the inspiration for the
terracotta range came from Jamie he
wanted to redevelop terracotta cookware
that is so often used in Portugal and in
Spain so the brief was pretty much
designed a range of terracotta which
functions as well as the best of the
traditional stuff that’s out there but
does it in a much more contemporary way
it’s been really exciting working on
this range of terracotta and cutlery for
Jamie more than anything because a lot
of what we do is furniture design
large-scale pieces for people in
people’s interiors and it’s been really
lovely to start to work with something
smaller cookware which we’re passionate
about cutlery which has been a
completely different scale again and
it’s opened our eyes to to being able to
work on a on a completely different type
of product something that we hope to do
a lot more of in the future
