Empowering Education: Learning With, Not Doing To | Brianna Crowley | TEDxYouth@HHS

we had a problem in my classroom as this
photo in illustration I had a set of
Chromebooks that we used almost every
day in almost every class to work on any
number of things and his summer before
I’d come in and a comas brilliant system
for my classroom in which I used as any
a teacher would all the supplies that
were available to me through the free
ordering form to create a folder for my
Chromebooks and I even put little
velcro’s for the cords it looked really
brilliant I look like that this is my
teacher created system for the
Chromebooks in my classroom what
happened could be very predictable to
anyone who had thought about it for five
minutes which is that I teach straight
up just about as I have so many
important interesting things to share or
listen to in my classroom and students
have so many important things to share
and listen to the hallway and so when
the bell rings they want to fly out of
my classroom and they quickly dispose
upset public in any fashion they
possibly can to get out quickly I do not
blame them for this but this is the
result this is the result so every day I
go back there and I would reorganize my
beautiful system but each day a little
bit each day or more frustrated about it
so finally I just decided what if I let
my students so it’s problem they’re not
my Chromebooks I’m not using them every
day but I’m taking care of them they
have ownership of the things they create
on them they didn’t have ownership of
places take care of the actual tool and
I recently go on to a Washington DC
professional development day on the
Saturday to learn about the client
thinking I was interested in it I
participated in talking with one of the
professionals and other industries of
validating this is very exciting cake
and so it punches my head that perhaps
this is the perfect time for me to
introduce this into my classroom I
hadn’t yet found the best wedding to
introduce it into my classroom so I
quickly as you can see scrolled on my
whiteboard this is a superior this is
freshmen I’m fed up they are being as
squarely as six period freshmen can be
and I said listen we’re gonna try
something new today we’re going to try a
design thinking procedure and you’re
gonna practice the argument persuasion
skills that we can talk about in two
classes English class they were very
excited because this is new and
different and novel dates that could
walk into so I have to quickly out the
to find the problem and the president
user which was easy they were sort of
the users but really I one of them
empathize with me as the user of the
system to keep it in the classroom
running and then build prototype and we
would test it here’s the catch they were
going to divide into small groups they
were going to each have a different
quote okay and they were going to use
their persuasion skills to convince
their classmates of their undertaking
the best one the classmate who vote
whichever one one we would test in the
classroom for a week and we would see
how it worked
they were a second and guess what they
were brilliant and they solved the
problem brilliantly and it taught me a
really important lesson which is that if
you want people to own a classroom a
community to learning any microt minute
you have to make me part of the process
of creating it and so in this small sort
of one period at a one day
laughs I carried away this important
lesson that I’ve been trying to learn a
number different ways this was just one
more way embedded more deeply into my
teaching practice that students need to
be the creators as positive as possible
here is their solution we took also
three supplies of those cardboard things
that you’ve been fitted to throughout
all of our church buildings and we
turned they turned them upside down
Oliver sitting horizontal and they took
those slips also pivots and they decided
if you ran the cords with a clip it
wouldn’t fall out when people hold it an
amount and the thicker part would would
keep the Chromebooks from getting
damaged plus the hanging holders would
have a lot of a sign I have been doing
my students created the best solution
for a working system so today I just
want to talk to you about empowered
education and the tagline came to me
when I was talking with a friend about
community development this idea that
when people go into communities that
instead of doing to the community with
their great idea they should learn with
alongside the community and so that idea
is sustainable beyond the people who are
coming in and going out when you look up
the definition of empower the verb to
empower you get this the granting of
power right authority to perform various
tasks or duties what I love about this
is not only the first three words the
transfer of power authority the sharing
of power 30 but I love the ending to one
end to be able to do something with it
to be able to feel good about anything
and when you look up the word
empowerment I love this idea that is a
process of becoming stronger more
company and is that you have controlling
one’s own life and clinging one’s right
there’s not a better definition I can
think of not only of a democracy but I
will learning environment this would be
our ideal my essential question today
and one that I’ve been wrestling with
for close to a decade and probably will
heard two or three more is that how do
we create communities of empowered
learners and the leaders because
empowerment is inherent to leadership
and I want to clarify here as we talk
about this that empowerment is not an
end in and of itself it’s a spectrum
I loved the presentation before about
the idea and gender sexuality being on a
spectrum so is empowerment so we can
take small steps every day to become
more empowered and we never are finished
with that so where we were the day
before can be different than where we’re
going to be in a year for now and it’s
always a process what it when you are
looking to create empowered communities
and an empowered educational communities
what if we look for partners more than
followers and what if we saw ourselves
as learners more than managers so the
difference between these things is as a
teacher if I saw my students as partners
in this learning experience I came to
that
an experience that was valuable to them
that they needed to improve their skills
improve their confidence improve their
self-awareness but what if I saw them as
partners that they can offer me just as
much think about the diversity of
perspective I can gain from 110 students
every single day into my life think
about what they can teach me about how I
can communicate differently and better
every single day think about what they
can teach me about their hobbies and
passions that I will would have never
known about you can see evidence of that
today so what if I taught my students is
apartment what if we saw what if
administrators all teachers as partners
and then our self-concept our own
journey of empowerment for ourselves
what if we saw ourselves as learners
more than managers there’s a role for
management there’s a role for managers
but if it’s an approach in a mindset
that we can take I think this is what we
listed systems of empowerment systems
that produced empowered learners and
leaders when I left first in high school
I worked for an organization I closely
aligned with a man called teacher
cupboard this is a really exciting admit
their definition here is that any
project or initiative was
collaboratively designed and in
by teachers and secondly those teachers
have collective autonomy and love both
of those words to make decisions
influencing the success of the school
the project our professional endeavor I
was really attracted to this because of
that concept I just talked about
teachers have so much to offer
the educational system and teachers who
are empowered will offer that but they
have to have leaders and managers who
are willing to see them as partners and
so this concept of a model built on the
empowerment of teachers was fascinating
to me and I had the privilege of
visiting these schools and sitting with
students and sitting with teachers
sitting with principals in these schools
there at least 90 I guess my teacher
powered schools just for United States
and even though this model isn’t
something that I would claim is quote
unquote the answer because there isn’t
just one to whatever ails our education
system I will claim that in the big
model that can teach us a lot about what
we teach change because here’s what I
observed and read as I thought about
this model I observed that when teachers
understand what it feels like to be
empowered would it feels like to start a
process and what it feels like to leave
they will model that for their students
and then students will see what it looks
like to act in an empowered way and to
leave themselves teacher leadership
promotes student leadership teacher
empowerment provides a stronger access
for student empowerment they’re directly
affected another thought about this
talked fanuc thought ok I’m passionate
about empowerment and have some of these
examples of why I’m passionate about it
I also started to research what I
thought I could provide an idiot
what are sort of the components to
create empowered educational communities
and I came up with these sort of four
domains meaningfulness irrelevance so
that answers the question is what I’m
doing connected to things I care about
that’s an that is crucial for a person
an individual field power and for a
community to feel empowered competence
and confidence this speaks to a teachers
to do everyday in school environments
they build skills so that students can
to see that they will be successful and
that they can go confident entering a
process impacted influence we see this
in the you matter the moment do i matter
does what i do matter to other people
empowerment is about being in a group of
people in a community as our theme is
today and we here as human beings about
what people think about us we care about
the impact we’re making on them and we
care about our role in that community
and so empowerment has to do with not
only seeing ourselves as individually
empowered but also seeing a community
empowered and seeing on role in that and
finally a choice not by me am i
contributing any guys what is happening
to me
so in our classrooms and in our schools
we have to think about what degree can
we push on these four domains to what
degree can we help students feel
confident and encompass it in the skills
that we know they’re going to need to go
out into the world and fulfill their
dreams and make the world a better place
do they feel like what we’re doing in
school is meaningful relevant to what
they value do they know that they matter
when they walk into school and have just
or face or number and finally do we
actually let that have choice as much as
we are able in a system that as we know
has a lot going on and a lot is made
needed so the big question is how can we
do this and in addition to those domains
we can also adopt this mindset of do I
know my own strengths and then am i
seeking out the strengths of others so
in a system of adults or students is
self-awareness and awareness of others
is what allows us to begin building
these systems now this is my goddaughter
and she makes the best skeptical face so
I decided to show his face to you
because at this point I feel like every
time talk about this inspiring moment
and everyone claps and you want to go do
this thing right and I really think
that’s important however the word
empowerment is somewhat of a buzz we’re
gonna get thrown around a lot and so
skeptically why aren’t all our systems
already in power we’re all knotted this
is what it should be and everyone agrees
that the words sound nice why wouldn’t
it happen and why does it happen so
slowly and so I have a couple of ideas
about that as well this comes from a
teacher Howard whitepaper
and I thought a chemically made clear
this switch when you are empowered and
when there’s a system of empowerment you
are accepting a collective of authority
which is that great part that we’ve been
talking about but you’re also accepting
accountability and accountability is
hard change is hard
growth is uncomfortable and empowerment
is not our status quo so anytime we have
a system that does not have empowerment
in the status quo and we want to get
somewhere else and we have to do that
with to change we have to get really
uncomfortable and that’s a messy part
which is why it’s really hopeful that
it’s a spectrum we can always be more
than we were yesterday we can always
move forward and there isn’t an end goal
let me share one more story for my
classroom about this concept also our
teaching different set of freshmen and
we had a project where a river choosing
fiction poem that interest is hem and as
they read through the book there is mr.
fine an issue that also interested them
a real life issues thanks are bullying
or science of how it affects our
relationships any type of topic and then
they would go and they research that
topic and they would answer this
essential question how accurately was
that topic portrayed in here fiction
book so they had chosen autonomy they
got to choose their top of the other to
choose their folk and in the student we
get to the end of the freshmen that
she’s getting and ready to regular run
track and she comes to me after class
when she is just crying she’s miss mrs.
Crowley I don’t know if I can answer
this question and I asked her what her
topic was answered her my neighbor topic
and she said I just don’t know I’ve been
doing the research I just want to answer
this question can you help me and I said
I can help you I can help you find my
resources and help you by extending your
deadline I can help you by giving you
feedback but she’s like no can you like
help me answer the question and I said I
can’t because when you chose that topic
it wasn’t a tough event a whole lot
about and as we’re doing the research I
was helping you
you can have it with the research but I
wasn’t doing it with you this is your
topic it is your question and you would
answer for yourself she did not like
that so much she wants out pretty
dejected and this illustrates that if
there’s a downside the difficulties the
math units of empowerment it is being
responsible it is having ownership it is
ultimately feeling some pressure to
produce a response or group of people
who are doing this with you who expect
you to produce a response I recently
read an article that I thought was
fascinating it was by a woman who works
at yo-yo which is a design company out
of California
I’m gonna let you read this quote on
your own about this equilibrium
and the emphasis on creating equilibrium
is that status quo we crave that and
whenever change happens it puts us in
disequilibrium that’s what happens when
we seek to empower others as we seek to
empower ourselves we can find ourself in
a state where we don’t feel stable
anymore things you don’t make sense and
we’re not sure what’s gonna happen next
and that’s very uncomfortable and so if
you just want to go back to the
stability of the status quo
so come on gesture as I wrap up here if
we’re going to really do this day it’s
going to be England mental and it’s
going to be messy hard work and it’s
going to be totally worth it but we need
to avoid using an Powerman as a buzz
word or a facade we need to avoid things
that have false choice or lack meaning
or only have two of the categories of
those four things and that’s going to be
difficult sometimes when you say in the
teacher leadership world and we need to
space sometimes when they say teacher
voice we knew that that was a shorthand
for tokenism we were invited into the
room
we weren’t really invited into the
actual authority or power that was out
there so we need to be careful about all
of us we need to be careful of making
sure that students when we have some
questions that we are willing to give
them the power with those questions when
we ask them into the room that we’re
willing to give their decision-making
and the same with teachers and his name
was superintendent and is naming parents
okay we need to fight apathy empowerment
is the opposite of equity you have to
care a whole lot about your own
empowerment and impairment of those
around you and you have to fight the
Apple
a lot easier saying let’s just keeps
that as close than working because it’s
not really working and we need to plan
for the disequilibrium that’s going to
happen discomfort and vulnerability are
part of this process and if you’re aware
of it and plan for it we won’t be
sidelined by it we might actually have
coping mechanisms and communities that
can support us through it so the end of
the story of my student who didn’t know
the answer to her question is this she
went home and she worked so hard and she
came back to me in a couple of days and
I checked in with her into this huge
smile and she won she started crying
again but this time is because she was
so relieved and so proud of herself
because she did it she answered her
question she found a way through that
blog and she was able to write the paper
she wanted to write on the topic she
wanted to write about it and she felt
like it wasn’t meaningful and she felt
like when she shared with her peers
there was going to be impactful and
guess what I’m gonna do that she did
that she empowered herself and I just
got to celebrate with her alongside her
so I want to leave you with this Niram
that is painted on an elementary school
in Harrisburg City together we lead
together we can be empowered and
together we can learn with and not do to
one another
