hi my name is Olivia and my name is Lena
and we’re the founders of girl with a
bug we started this project after
education activist malala yousufzai was
shot by the Taliban on our way back home
from school it began as a social media
experiment where we set up a Facebook
page and asked people to submit pictures
of themselves with a book or a sign
saying I standard Malala to raise
awareness about girls education we
received hundreds of photos from
ordinary people around the world and
from organizations such as the half the
sky movement and the UN so far we’ve
acted as curators collecting and
disseminating information about women’s
rights and girls education and the crazy
barriers that women face wear out the
world now we’re ready to take girls a
bunch of next level so here’s our
expedition idea we want to travel to 12
countries in 12 months since you got
fabulous people who are breaking
education barriers and advocating for
girls and women in their community we’ll
explore for example what is going to
school look like in each country motor
specific challenges communities are
facing what are some intersecting issues
health resources ideology we’ve already
begun researching potentially community
partners that we could work with once
we’re on the ground along the way we’ll
be blogging sharing photos videos and
interviews through are already well
established social media presence here’s
our country list so far Guatemala Peru
Nepal India Pakistan karastan South
Africa Nigeria provided ebolas no longer
a thing Egypt Jordan Yemen and Iceland
at the end of our adventure we hope to
compile our stories and experiences in a
documentary conveniently Lina has a
bachelors in video production and a
master’s in journalism and olivia has a
bachelor’s in International Studies and
a minor in Arabic between the two of us
we speak English Arabic or the
Portuguese and Spanish for the countries
where we don’t speak the language will
be hiring translators with the money
that you so graciously grant us
education is a human right that too many
girls have been denied last week at the
UN Malala said that two men and women
have never been told the very humans we
deserve equal righteousness girls
education needs three things from the
global community’s attention funding and
political pressure we hope this
expedition will address all three by
lending a microphone to individuals and
organizations who believe the access to
education is he comin right for every
girl and honestly it’s a good day for
everyone when girls can go to and stay
in school yeah
