When Baby Brings the Blues

hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today our host
Kristine speaks with author dr. ariel
dolphin about her latest book when baby
brings the blues what inspired you to
write this book as a psychiatrist who
specializes in women’s mental health I
see a lot of women who have postpartum
depression and I felt that they were
really no adequate up-to-date
information about postpartum depression
particularly medication treatments and
also I spend a lot of time with women
and their families and their partners
who are suffering from postpartum
depression and I felt that the things
that I say that I hope are helpful to
the patients who I see in my office
could be helpful too many women who are
out there in your book you recommend
some mental reframing exercises can you
talk a bit more about that the theory
behind cognitive behavioral therapy is
that the way you think about things
impacts how you feel so if you think
about things in a very negative way a
very pessimistic way you’re going to
feel more depressed so what I try to
help people do in the book is to look at
some of their underlying thoughts and to
think about how they can think about a
more balanced thought which might make
them feel better and and it’s not just
meant to be oh just think positive and
you’ll feel positive but to really
target some of the things such as oh I’m
a terrible mother I was never meant to
do this are you such a terrible mother
what have you done well today what are
some of the good things about your
mothering style and about you and really
instead of just accepting that initial
negative harsh thought which of course
is going to make you feel depressed and
down on yourself how can you turn that
around into really to reflect reality
and not just the negative parts of
reality what do you hope to accomplish
now that the book is out there in terms
of increasing awareness of postpartum
depression it’s my hope that writing the
book will get people talking about it
more and more and will help moms
themselves realize that it’s not
something to be ashamed of it’s
something to see as an illness to get
help for and to do what you need to do
to treat it and I kind of like to take a
really matter of fact approach to it for
people to see it like any other illness
they might have it’s an issue yes but
don’t feel shame don’t keep suffering
and Sons just acknowledge that this is
an issue get the help make some changes
in your life and I hope that people will
be less fearful of the problem and more
embracing of some of the solutions
because there are such good treatments
and people are so responsive to
treatment and do really
really well and they can put this behind
them and that’s really what my hope is
to to normalize it to increase awareness
and to give people hope that yes they
can get better they can do really well
and go on to have a great relationship
with their baby and with their partner
and feel good as a mom and move ahead in
life
