hi my name is Stephanie welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be
learning more about the musical known as
wicked popular I’ll help you be popular
so if you could describe wicked in one
word what would it be wicked in one word
a wicked so let’s start cuz you’ve got
an awfully long way know it’s about
these two girls and how they become the
Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the
Good Witch and their friendship and then
what happens to make the story of The
Wizard of Oz so it’s sort of that behind
the scenes story but friendship is a
main theme of our show I know about
popular and within us just from me to be
cool you’ll be instead of dreary who you
were are why do you think the show has
resonated with critics and fans you know
I think that it’s something that people
identify with Elphaba the green witch is
judged based on the color of her skin
being green being green everyone can
identify with being green and you sort
of take it on as your own story in some
ways or how you felt when you were in
high school or how you feel at work you
sort of think you’re going to see a big
fluffy musical and it has this amazing
heart to it cats
I’ve been changed for the better I do
believe I have been changed for the
better
so I know that the musical is based on a
book I was wondering how that relates to
the movie the classic movie that we all
love Gregory Maguire who wrote the book
he he’s written a number of books based
on classic stories and fairy tales that
people are familiar with and sort of
twisted them his book is much darker
than the musical The Wizard of Oz was
originally a very political book and he
based his book off of the book version
more so than the movie version we took
his book and we you know fluffed it up a
little dancing to light my lesson
careless make sure you wear that stubble
you know the his book it’s taking those
moments that you’re so familiar with you
know ruby slippers and flying monkeys
and things like that and in twisting
them around and so it’s really clever
how that’s done but at the same time you
can enjoy it if you’re not a huge Wizard
of Oz fan or it doesn’t you know it’s
not just for the you know it’s still a
great story no matter where you put it
in how you do it

can you tell me about some of the art
forms that are featured in the in the
show there’s lots of lighting sound
music the costumes have huge amounts of
detail to them and they’re quite
spectacular they won the Tony Award you
know that all those different elements
come together to like have this amazing
moment on stage

are there any special moments or perhaps
special effects that really touch an
audience member they were amazing
moments in the show that that touch
different people in different ways the
end of act 1 is a huge spectacle with
lots of lights and special effects often
times that sort of is like to me the
moment that I really love to watch but
then there’s a couple of songs that like
really touch people in other ways
you know there’s moments where you’ll
catch a you know a day where you’re
having a bad day they’re singing a song
and you’re like oh my gosh you’re like
wait a minute I hear this every day I
still get things you know emotional
reactions to it
