What’s It Like at the National Circus School?

hey welcome to watchmojo.com
I’m your host Laila and I’m gonna talk
to student at illegit at the national
circus school to see what it takes to
specialize in tightwire Natalie tell us
first a little bit about your background
I started out actually as a gymnast and
a dancer and I just started circus a few
years ago kind of I was performing as a
dancer mostly and doing our chromatics
in my dancing work and some circus
people you know found me and saw me
doing acrobatics what’s your specialty
now I’m doing tight wire now is that
strictly like walking across the wire
well there’s different types of tight
wire there’s high wire and then there’s
low low tight wire which is more of
dancing and acrobatics on the wires it’s
actually really hard just to stand on it
and once you learn that you can walk and
you start turning and jumping and it’s
kind of like dance moves that you
transfer to the wire after you get a
little better with dance if I’m an
acrobat so I started doing acrobatics as
soon as possible on the wire you think
that you’ll venture up and the high wire
I really want to try I mean you never
know till you try but I’d love to try it
at least once how rigorous is the
training like want to walk us through a
typical day at school we start anywhere
from 8:30 to 10:30 in the day I warm up
my body get my muscles warm stretch do
injury prevention for my shoulders and
legs so that when I train I’m prepared
and I’m strong
then I train for two hours sometimes two
and a half for three hours and stretch
afterwards and then at the school we
also have classes and dance
anatomy cup physique it’s most like
muscle building masculine are you
training mostly solo do you work with
other students or do you train
individually on tight where it’s it’s
individual training here but we have
group classes like dance and in first
and second year you do hand a hand it’s
kind of acrobatics on with two people so
you have one person courting another
person and you’re flying and you do more
group stuff and some people do have to
hand for their major or duo trapeze and
they work together but I’m mostly alone
you can expect to get your major next
year do you have any plans for what you
want to do afterwards I had a lot of
dreams and a lot of plans but I don’t
know exactly what I wanted to do I
definitely want to work in creation and
to work with other artists and create a
project of create a show create
performance environments how competitive
do you expect the world of circus arts
to be when you’re finished I have no
idea I think it depends on what you’re
specializing in I know for some
apparatus is like swinging trapeze it’s
really difficult to find work because
it’s it’s difficult to rig and
competition I don’t think there’s very
many tight wire walkers there’s not
really that many in North America so for
tight where I I don’t think there’s so
much competition but we’ll see yeah
thanks a lot thank you
