Top 5 Issues Facing Olympic Cities

when you build all that once maybe you
do it all correctly but if you do it
wrong it’s a big mistake
urban planning for the Olympic Games is
a huge undertaking from a technical and
political standpoint some cities have
been very successful while others not as
much hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome
to watchmojo.com in this section of our
Olympic series we discuss five major
questions and challenges that face
Olympic urban planners for example are
the exorbitant costs associated with
hosting the Olympics really worth it
generally the promises of Revenue failed
to materialize I mean there’s a lot of
optimism of what Olympic Games will
bring I think Olympic Games are sold to
the population to the electorate and so
on on the basis of economic promises
that don’t always materialize it’s good
if olympic games don’t cost too much but
on the other hand we know that olympic
games have a lot of benefits in terms of
urban regeneration tons of putting a
city on the map and so on and so forth
that may justify a certain expenditure
one way the Olympic Games can have that
lasting value on a city is in its
reputation this sporting event is not
only a time for international
cooperation and competition it’s also a
time to showcase the host city to the
world the design will be a showcase of
talent of innovation of creativity it’s
really an opportunity for city to boast
you want to leave an impression of the
sort of city you are for many cities is
your city of avant-garde for some cities
your sustainable green city it’s kind of
the theme and the branding that it
enables you to do but sometimes that
boasting and branding can get host
cities into trouble some have failed to
successfully integrate their Olympic
venues into the city after the games for
example bird’s nest stadium is a
spectacular design but has struggled to
find a place in post Olympic Beijing
here’s why cities that we like very
often have grown over time organically
you cannot just plunk down you
huge objects in a million and expect
them to be integrated
you can try to integrate large-scale
developments mega projects in the city
better if you have a large scope in
other words if you really consider the
Olympic venue the Olympic Village in the
larger fabric of the city and especially
if you plan ahead for how to make these
things work in the long term how do you
plan it so that it functions both for
special event and for normal life
afterwards and we’ve seen that you know
some things may have been great for the
event but they’re not so successful
after okay our stadium in Montreal not
greatest success in that respect now
it’s due to technical problems and so on
but we’re getting there one host city
that was trying its best not to waste
the Olympic opportunity of regeneration
was London
urban planners ahead of the 2012 Summer
Olympics wanted to ensure that they were
building constructions that would have a
lasting and positive effect on the city
the bet of London was that the Olympic
Games would really help in urban
regeneration that is really what they
decided who said we’re going to use the
Olympic Games as an opportunity to
regenerate one of those parts of London
that have been characterized by an
industrial past the industrialization
and therefore a lot of abandoned land
and employment poor living conditions
and so on the corporation that is in
charge of the facilities of creating
everything is called the London Olympic
legacy company and so the whole idea
there is that the Olympics would have a
legacy for London for the long term and
that a part of the city would be changed
by the Olympics forever and for the
better obviously one of the most vital
constructions to any Olympic Games is
the Olympic Village but again it can be
very difficult to plan for its use after
the event for a variety of reasons
art-lete quarters are very important
component of the Olympic venues in
general and they generally are those
that are meant to serve a general
population afterwards you know the
Olympic Stadium may become a soccer
stadium or football stadium the athletes
accommodations have to become housing in
Montreal we have these two very large
buildings that have become housing they
were not well integrated in their
neighborhood the integration is
proceeding now with construction on the
empty land next to them but in London
they really have decided to make the
athletes housing into a new neighborhood
and it’s very large it’s designed like a
neighborhood not a neighborhood of
duplexes and triplexes the neighborhood
of high-rises and one of the big
challenges there again is the scale
what’s even more difficult is then to
find someone who will take off and be
responsible for that to what extent do
you allow something that was built
publicly to become private I think that
if you actually don’t have good planning
from the start that’s where you have
problems
