10 video game opening credits sequences
great night for a party not to be
confused with our top ten video game
intros list for this list we’re looking
at the opening scenes that use creative
ways to showcase the video games credits
haha yes that is a fake legend jerk
number 10 Resident Evil Outbreak
this installment of the survival horror
franchise details the events in Raccoon
City following the outbreak of the
t-virus
this opening sequence gives you a hint
as to what you are going to be coming up
against as the camera pans around the
sewers below the city umbrellas Security
Service hopelessly struggle to fight
against the infected monstrosity as the
visuals transition between the fighting
and the microscopic images of the
offending virus surrounding the credits
it brilliantly gives you a rat’s eye
view of how the carnage on the streets
began to develop into a larger scale
number nine bayonetta in this
introduction the names of who worked on
this dark fast-paced third-person
shooter emerged from a selection of
different tombstones in a rather
gorgeously animated graveyard Jesus you
really get into these shit don’t you
even though the names appear faded from
view and memory on the gravestone they
will be very well remembered in real
life as the game was incredibly well
received by critics maybe having your
name carved into a videogame stone is
the best way to acknowledge the work
that you did when you end up in the
afterlife that’s not going to be pretty
by the time we get to director Hideki
Kamiya gravestone Enzo is peeing on it
maybe some sort of subtle symbolism from
the animation department it it looks
like Humpty Dumpty’s taking his last
fall still that gravestone is actually
put to some good use once the action
starts
number eight Max Payne 3 let it go
seriously the eponymous star of a series
of third-person shooters struggling to
adjust to his new life in South Paulo
provides the setting for the opening of
this game definitely more my style
Panama or Hoboken I guess the tortured
ex-cop turned private security
contractor talks about his struggles
with alcohol and his troubled past while
the flickering shots emphasized how much
his life has been defined by those same
struggles and right it wasn’t doing me
any favors the sobering score also
perfectly supports the beginning of
Payne’s next unfortunate adventure
excited really I really needed a new
start
number seven the Last of Us
demonstrations broke out following the
execution of six more alleged fireflies
never doubt the artistic portrayal of
eerie black and white footage showing
growing fungus here a number of audio
clips from news reports give you just
enough information to inform you that
the world is in chaos but it also leaves
it vague enough to make you want to know
more about how civilization has been
left into such a state Los Angeles is
now the latest city to be placed under
martial law if you know the game then
the fungus in the background will make a
lot of sense but in your first
playthrough it will act as an intriguing
tease as to what’s to come remember when
you’re lost in the darkness look for the
light believe in the fireflies
number six Batman Arkham Asylum look at
all this new security as a guy supposed
to break out of here all of the titles
in this action-adventure series have had
impressive opening credits scenes with
the Arkham Knight sequence coming in
just behind this one
excuse me sir there’s no smoking in here
alongside the bats greatest foe you take
a walk through the intensive treatment
section of Arkham Asylum the Clown
Prince of Crime barely shuts up in an
extended sequence that also gives you a
look at Killer Croc eyes Contras and
Batman it also allows you some freedom
to take a look around a dark comic book
world you will soon be fighting through
yeah what don’t you trust me our guest
has arrived number five the wolf among
us
Sherriff Bigby wolf has a stroll and a
smoke through the neon tinted world of
Babel town the seedy location of this
interactive mystery that reimagines
classic myths and legends have you seen
my wife
have you seen Beauty it feels
reminiscent of a classic film noir and
that is the same theme that the rest of
the game follows you got me out of a bad
situation back there thanks I’m still
gonna need a statement the events of the
game are set in 1986 and the synthesizer
score with the neon lights puts just
straight into that era
number four half-life you must report to
Black Mesa personnel for cross
before you will be permitted into the
high security branch of the transit
system there are so many mysteries
surrounding the lure of the half-life
series and these questions begin with
the opening credits of the legendary
sci-fi first-person shooter in the event
of an emergency passengers are to remain
and await further instruction you take a
tour of the Black Mesa facility in a
monorail carriage and can look at the
diverse range of goings-on which shed
little to no light on what the real
purpose of the site is regular radiation
and biohazard screenings are a
requirement of continued employment in
the Black Mesa research facility the
female voice over the PA system is meant
to be reassuring but you can’t help but
feel as though there’s a lot more at
work than what you see on the surface
number three
final fantasy 6
it may be pretty basic in comparison to
some of the other sequences on this list
but for the time it manages to employ a
level of cinematic prowess that few
other titles of the era could match
the credit sequence only has three
soldiers and magitek armor marching
through a snowy landscape but Nobuo
Uematsu’s powerful score gives punch to
what otherwise would be a mundane scene
this series of RPGs gets you invested in
the story like few others and this is
the ideal way to get you going for the
journey ahead number two God of War 3
we are reminded of the gory alternative
take on Greek mythology that this game
explores in this opening sequences that
uses a beautiful illustration style that
hammers home the setting and period
we get clips of Kratos fighting against
other gods and Titans as he defeats each
one in a variety of gruesome manners
the whole series is one of the most
mature you could ever pick up and even
the credits don’t let you forget this
before we reveal our top pick let’s have
a look at some honorable mentions
what the hell kind of name is soap
singing dreams or Hollywood will shape
the thoughts and desires of the entire
planet number one Metal Gear Solid 3
Snake Eater
no other game does opening credits quite
like the Metal Gear series with the
opening from Sons of Liberty also making
a great case for the top spot
the credit scenes have all clearly been
influenced by similar sequences in Bond
films and they share many features
a powerful ballad plays over the top of
abstract imagery while it transitions
between our main character and various
action set-pieces
it’s a beginning befitting of a
Hollywood movie but it’s also right at
home setting up this brilliant entry in
the stealth genre
do you agree with our list it’s my new
life just like you said
which opening credit sequence gets you
