Top 10 Movie Taglines

we read them all we remember some and
we’re about to honor the best trans bond
steadfast bread welcome to watchmojo.com
and today we’re counting down our picks
for the top 10 movie tag lines for this
list we’ve looked at the words phrases
and idioms that are splattered across
movie trailers and posters for
promotional purposes there are three
point seven trillion fish in the ocean
only the cleverest and most memorable
will make our countdown though number 10
we are not alone Close Encounters of the
Third Kind this is a simple start but a
downright effective one as well Steven
Spielberg’s 1977 science fiction super
film is still heralded as one of the
greatest of its type well I guess you’ve
noticed we are not alone fours right to
the movies extraterrestrial essence I
just want to know it’s really happening
the idea being that a close encounter of
the first kind would be a UFO sighting
the second kind would be experiencing
physical effects the third equals
contact
a tag line of forwards a tag line for
the Third Kind a tag line for 10th place
number nine the last man on earth is not
alone I am Legend I’m a survivor living
in New York City I am broadcasting on
all am frequencies the primary function
of a tag line is to capture attention it
has to get its readers thinking about
the movie excited about the movie
wanting to go and see the movie this one
liner for Will Smith’s I am Legend does
exactly that anybody please you are not
alone as interesting an oxymoron as has
ever been made for film it cuts to the
point but gives little of the game away
I can provide food I can provide shelter
I can provide security made up of two
simple points this complex sentence
makes for one clever idea anybody number
eight hang on for the comedy that goes
to infinity and beyond Toy Story at
eight a hook that is undeniably and
unquestionably linked to one film and
one film along to infinity and beyond is
so Toy Story in 1995 it must have been
one of the most overused turns of phrase
on the schoolyard playground and
probably in the office at work as well
the catchphrase of a certain Buzz
Lightyear it assured in more than a
single movie to infinity became a Pixar
mantra
[Music]
as with Toy Story they revolutionized
animation completely and they’ve been
pushing beyond ever since
[Music]
number seven you’ll believe a man can
fly Superman another acute selection of
words in exactly the right order when
Superman flew onto our screens he did so
with supreme confidence well I certainly
hope this little incident hasn’t put you
off flying this via logically and just
plain logically a man cannot fly don’t
believe me I swear Diane when the big
red cape and fight blood groups as well
but so apparently impressive was Richard
Donner’s 1978 movie we were told before
we’d even seen the film that we would
accept the unacceptable fly don’t look
just fly this movie’s tagline is its own
glittering review and there were very
few who found reason to counter argue
[Music]
number six there are three point seven
trillion fish in the ocean they’re
looking for one Finding Nemo
so coral when you said you wanted an
ocean view you didn’t think you’re gonna
get the whole ocean did you some more
prize promoting from Pixar studios for
Finding Nemo
the tagline has a clever set up and a
clear punchline well there has to be
someone it’s the ocean silly you’re not
going to hear the stage is set quickly
and concisely before the problem and the
point of the movie is laid down about
the ocean that’s my boy
in the end it’s a case of simple
mathematics three point seven trillion
to one good luck with that but it
doesn’t matter because no fish in this
entire ocean is going to help me it’s
also an indication of the size of the
movie though and the potential for new
characters it’s animated aquatic
anticipatory awesomeness yeah why can’t
I have someone out there who’s looking
for you
he’s not working for me scared of the
ocean number five who you gonna call
ghostbusters
research shows that things are easier to
remember if they are put to music google
it if you don’t believe us which is why
this simple tagline is one of the
greatest ever conceived try saying it
without the accompanied rhythm feels
weird doesn’t it pick up your phone and
call the professionals now try saying it
without immediately screaming the movies
title in your head afterwards
exactly Ray Parker jr. was onto a winner
when he wrote the Ghostbusters theme
song it has well and truly stood the
tagline test of time
number four a long time ago in a galaxy
far far away Star Wars Episode four a
new hope thank the maker
though not is intrinsically linked with
its movies theme tune as our fifth entry
this tagline provokes a similar
inclination to hum a certain piece of
music
a 10 word sentence it’s the platform
from which was launched perhaps cinema’s
greatest ever saga there are no
specifics to the Star Wars hook but
that’s what makes it great surrounds us
and penetrates us it binds the Galaxy
together George Lucas and company are
asking us to suspend our disbelief and
we are more than happy to do so
the time is long the galaxy is far the
anticipation levels are unbelievable you
don’t believe in the force do you kid
I’ve flown from one side of this galaxy
to the other I’ve seen a lot of strange
stuff but I’ve never seen anything to
make me believe there’s one all-powerful
force controlling everything number
three just when you thought it was safe
to go back in the water
jaws – what makes you think there might
be one in these waters
the only outright sequel to make our
list the jaws – tagline rifts so
effectively on its predecessor that it
outshines
even the initial movies promotional
pattern the don’t go in the water slogan
for the original jaws was simple and
scary enough but for the second helping
of shark the writers really earned their
wage post jaws the ocean had seemed an
ominous place the three years between
men and the second installment did much
to soothe fears its other great white or
another killer whale
but this tagline did everything to bring
them all flooding back again
number two an adventurer 65 million
years in the making
Jurassic Park – Jurassic we’ve already
found with Finding Nemo that a big
number in the tag line creates big
expectations for the movie dinosaurs and
man two species separated by 65 million
years of evolution just been suddenly
thrown back into the mix together that
rule has never been more effectively
realized than for Steven Spielberg’s
Jurassic Park and sometimes animals that
went extinct millions of years ago like
dinosaurs left their blueprints behind
for us to find a cinematic adventure
unlike any other before or arguably
since with this tagline the production
team has playfully had their work load
exaggerated but the film’s enormity is
plainly understood a film about
dinosaurs and primitive beasts the
modern subtlety to its tag is seriously
satisfying
what do you call discovery I call the
rape of the natural world before we
unveil our top pick here are a few
honorable mentions you can’t touch
anything without destroying it thank you
mister my name is bond James Bond
we’ve always been calling her the bride
on account of the dress I’m gonna make
him an offer again with you you can’t
pull off a stunt like that that’s
suicide where there’s a will there’s a
way
couldn’t agree more and I will be
leaving of that way number one in space
no one can hear you scream
alien
eight words all manner of conflicting
emotions the tagline for 1979’s
alien was so effective it has been
permanently branded into popular culture
this hook highlights much about the
movie but gives away nothing
we know there’s science fiction
we know there’s loneliness we know
there’s gonna be reason to scream but
it’s going to be pointless to do so
other than that we have little to go on
and every reason to pay a visit to the
cinema where ironically plenty of
screams are likely to be heard do you
agree with our list how can we possibly
have the slightest idea what to expect
which movie tagline isn’t here but
should be they hit us Buena Park for
more attention grabbing top 10s
