many of the world’s most beautiful
countries can be considered dangerous
for travelers hi I’m Rebecca Braden and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with FRA MERS editor Jean
Shannon about how to prepare for travel
to a dangerous country can you give us a
few examples of potentially dangerous
countries that we might want to visit I
think of a place like Iraq or Somalia
you know it’s certainly going at your
own risk could be hard to get things
like insurance or that sort of thing do
your research take precautions find a
local who can take you through these
places and just learn about how the
culture works so you can get around a
bit easier the Greece is a great example
that’s been in the news the Greece
tourism board has been doing a really
interesting thing in alerting travelers
to what’s going on they actually on
their Twitter feed have identified
exactly the parts of town where any
rioting was taking place so the
travelers know to avoid that and it’s
really brought into focus how much of
the country is very safe and really is
almost everywhere except for where these
areas of isolated violence are and so
now obviously you’ll see a few better
deals going to Greece than you normally
would have what would you say makes
these countries dangerous we usually
political violence there’s certain
places Somalia being a great example
where foreigners are targeted as sort of
a some sort of prize most places where
there’s violence it has nothing to do
with the traveler and it really is
something an internal matter so as long
as you steer clear of it you’ll be okay
how can we best plan beforehand to avoid
danger in these countries well it’s a
lot of self-education I think learning a
bit of the language so you can actually
communicate with people while you’re
there learning what to do when you’re in
a dangerous situation just in terms of
whether to negotiate or not certainly
making contact with your embassy while
you’re there and making people aware of
where you are and trying to be in as
direct contact with people as much as
possible so something does happen
they’ll know quite quickly and can do
something about it for you in terms of
our wardrobe and what we’re carrying
with us how should we dress if you
really want to be aware of not wearing
anything that’s offensive we know if
you’re going into a heavily religious
area you don’t be wearing something
that’s considered provocative certainly
it can wardrobe could be an advantage in
terms of disguising you and making you
not stand out I think a lot
even in going to a destination like Rio
for example that really isn’t dangerous
per se but we’re foreigners or tourists
can be targeted for robbery and that
sort of thing making sure that you’re
not wearing flashy jewelry or any of
that sort of thing just kind of being
cautious for what the risks are and
accommodating them what should we have
with us at all times passport copy of
your documents release so that if
something is lost you have something to
do that way often I find is keeping
things as simple as possible that you’re
traveling light on your feet and
anything great little gifts that you can
bring seven things as simple as you know
meeting local children but also you know
if you’re in a situation where you need
to have some kind of monetary exchange
to get you passage for something it’s
good to have local currency of that sort
of thing I think that’s a very rare
instance but you know if that’s the kind
of error you’re going into then you want
to be prepared for that thank you very
much my pleasure
