The Power of the Biker Gang

Brando and James Dean may make it look
ultra cool in the movies but do we know
what it’s like in real life hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with author Jerry Langdon about his
novel by Kerr so tell us about biker
it’s accomplished of many stories about
la bikers both in Canada in the US and
so much that Europe put together in a
fiction book that makes it easy for
people to understand who the bikers are
what they go through and what their sort
of point in life is
it’s barely fictionalized the great
thing about it being fiction is that
things I know that happened but I can’t
really say for legal reasons or for
other reasons I can say in fiction
because it’s not real people how did you
attain accuracy what kind of research
did you have to do for your book there
are three kinds of research when you do
this there’s the archival research we go
into all newspapers and everything you
find out the mainstream take on
everything that happened and then you go
and find the people who were involved –
bikers themselves people were affected
by them cops always love to talk lawyers
the third phase is when you talk to
people who are involved in it now
when did the phenomenon of biker gangs
start the belief is that it all happened
after World War Two the consensus
opinion amongst experts was always that
these men had experienced adrenaline
rushes in combat that they were trying
to rematch later on in life but I found
like the gangs going back as far as 1935
they took a real hit in the sixties or
seventies and then after that it became
a great way to make money she was a drug
trade and by the time of the turn of the
millennium
they were dominating organized crime
what is the structure of a typical biker
game all bikers sort of are united by
the bond of not being part of regular
society it’s almost if you would a
parallel society smaller gangs they get
together and these are guys who just
want to ride their bikes and party and
have a great time and the opposite would
be the Hells Angels which are run like a
giant corporation have franchises
everywhere and are frequently indicted
rated for drug trafficking steroid
trafficking across the
protection rackets working for the Mafia
loan-sharking Cato this goes on and on
it how and why do biker gangs remain so
powerful out of fear and acceptance
acceptance is interesting because a lot
of people see that sort of outlaw
persona as something to be admired I
mean our favorite character in Star Wars
was Hansel of the smuggler you know
there’s a coolness about it it’s just
some people not everybody obviously but
they have returned
