The History of Waterways in the U.S. and Canada

this canal boat helped celebrate the
shared history of canada and the united
states hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’ll
be traveling back to the 1800s aboard
the lowest McClure what is historically
significant about this boat in this type
of hope the canal boats really were
invented when the canals were invented
1820s in both the United States and
Canada they needed a boat that could be
shaped correctly to go through the canal
which was a highly engineered prism but
also go through the locks which were
also highly engineered and really
restricted the length and beam of a
vessel that could travel through it and
so when you look at this boat you see
it’s very long narrow with straight
sides and that’s really for it to
maximize its cargo capacity because it
was a freight boat but I’ll still allow
it to fit through the locks of its
generation so what is she made up the
boat is a wooden boat it’s a replica
it’s modeled after two originals both
sunk on the bottom of Lake Champlain
both built in the year 1862 and both of
the type that we call Lake Champlain
sailing canal boats and so is nautical
archaeologists we documented those boats
on the bottom measuring everything we
could taking wood samples every place we
could over years until we could create a
very accurate set of builders plans we
built this boat quite traditionally we
mimic the woods we knew up woods were
you sore bottom and sides are mostly
white oak our frame is white oak our
deck is white pine our mass or white
spruce and we built the boat as
accurately as we could we wanted to
build a clone we didn’t want to build a
better boat than then we wanted to build
their boat now how are the waterways
connecting Quebec New York and Vermont
historically significant to the
development of those regions well the
interconnected waterways really account
for much of the military and commercial
history we share samuel de champlain
traveled these waterways to explore and
discover Native Americans travel these
waterways for centuries when the
military conflicts died down the
other ways we’re seen as the logical
interstate highways boats were the way
people move boats were the way cargos
moved and all of a sudden people realize
that if you you built a canal at chambly
you built the canal at machine built a
canal at the southern end of Lake
Champlain and connected it to the Hudson
you built a canal out west to buffalo
and maybe one North to us we go all of a
sudden you’ve linked a very big part of
our region in a commercial
transportation passenger enterprise
these waterways in their day were the
indispensable links for moving people
and freight from point A to point B well
thank you very much it’s my pleasure
