The Basics of HD

hello this is Christmas watchmojo.com
i’m joined today with Phil who’s a
representative for samsung and what
we’re going to do is look at some of the
technologies president high-definition
televisions and some of the newer
offerings of Samsung has to offer this
year so thank you for joining me my
pleasure my pleasure so just to start it
off I’m seeing some beautiful displays
here but um you know as a consumer going
out to buy a television what sort of
things should I be looking for well the
biggest thing you want to look for
really is is picture quality everybody’s
eyes different so you want to just look
for which picture you like the best
there’s plasma there’s LCD they’re both
excellent technologies really the major
message now is 1080p or full HD I mean
HD came out about four or five years ago
it was an interlaced signal so basically
it’s a picture that flickers and that’s
what hurts your eyes and makes you tired
when you watch TV you really want to
have a progressive picture so just to
better understand the notion of
progressive versus interlace so
traditionally high definition has been
an interlaced signal so for example a
1080i television is drawing all of the
odd numbered lines first and then all
the even numbered lines but rather now
we have a progressive signal so when one
passes drawing them all so typically
they say that for motion that tends to
be better because you have a more solid
image and you’re not getting that blur
effect so that seems evident here as I’m
looking at this year this is what sort
of signal are we being fed to the to
this elevational progressive this is all
a high-definition signal coming in now
the difference is the one in the middle
is 720 lines progressive whereas this
one is a thousand and 80 lines
progressive so this when ATP vs. 720 a
exactly so there’s just more raw
information and data being streamed to
this screen as opposed to this one but
by G they both look fantastic now the
thing with plasma is lcds even DLP’s
there are what you call a fixed pixel
display so no matter what you get the
same resolution on screen they have a
native resolution that’s right so this
is giving you 1080p so two million
pixels roughly this is giving you 720p
roughly a million pixels I can send in
five hundred thousand pixels I can send
in two million pixels we’re still going
to have 1,000,000 here and you’re still
gonna have two million there the
advantage is no matter what you get a
higher resolution over here that’s what
blu-ray gives you that’s what HD DVD all
the new formats or 1080p playstation 3
and all those use HDMI to connect so
there’s now a digital connection for the
first time to hook up your video so this
lossless video when you go from one
component
you
